Abstract

We present a study of collective multiphoton blockade in coherently driven atoms in a single-mode cavity. Considering two atoms strongly coupled to an optical cavity, we show that the two-photon blockade with two-photon antibunching, and the three-photon blockade with three-photon antibunching can be observed simultaneously. The three-photon blockade probes both dressed states in the two-photon and three-photon spaces. The two-photon and three-photon blockades strongly depend on the location of the two atoms in the strong-coupling regime. The asymmetry in the atom-cavity coupling constants opens pathways for multiphoton blockade which is also shown to be sensitive to the atomic decay and pumping strengths. The work presented here predicts many quantum statistical features due to the collective behavior of atoms and can be useful to generate nonclassical photon pairs.

Collective Three-Photon Blockade In A Cavity QED System

Chengjie Zhu, Yaping Yang, G. S. Agarwal

We present a theoretical proposal to realize a collective two-photon blockade in a coherently-driven, two-qubits cavity QED system. We show that the three-photon blockade with two-photon bunching can be achieved when two qubits couple the cavity asymmetrically. The proposal may predict many new quantum statistical features due to the collective behavior of atoms and can be useful to generate non-classical photon pairs.

Two-Photon Blockade in an Atom-Driven Cavity QED System

Christoph Hamsen, Karl Nicolas Tolazzi, Tatjana Wilk +1 more

Photon blockade is a dynamical quantum-nonlinear effect in driven systems with an anharmonic energy ladder. For a single atom strongly coupled to an optical cavity, we show that atom driving gives a decisively larger optical nonlinearity than cavity driving. This enhances single-photon blockade and allows for the implementation of two-photon blockade where the absorption of two photons suppresses the absorption of further photons. As a signature, we report on three-photon antibunching with simultaneous two-photon bunching observed in the light emitted from the cavity. Our experiment constitutes a significant step towards multiphoton quantum-nonlinear optics.

Two-photon blockade in a cascaded cavity-quantum-electrodynamics system

Qian Bin, Xin‐You Lü, Shang-Wu Bin +1 more

We investigate theoretically the model of a cavity-quantum-electrodynamics (QED) system that consists of two two-level atoms coupled to a single-mode cavity in the weak coupling regime, where the system is driven by quantum light. The dynamics behavior of the entire system is tackled in the framework of a cascaded quantum system. We find that the two-photon blockade with two-photon bunching and three-photon antibunching can be obtained even when the strong system dissipation is included. This result shows that our work has potential for realizing entangled photon pairs in a weakly coupled cavity. Moreover, we also analyze the photon statistics of the system in the case of out-of-resonance coupling between cavity and two nonidentical atoms. Here, an unconventional photon blockade effect with suppression of two-photon correlation and enhancement of three-photon correlation can be realized, which shows many quantum statistical characteristics of a cavity QED system in weak coupling.

Multiphoton blockade and antibunching in an optical cavity coupled with dipole-dipole-interacting Λ -type atoms

Z Haider, Shahid Qamar, Muhammad Irfan

We study multiphoton blockade effects in a single-mode cavity interacting with two three-level atoms in $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ configuration having position-dependent atom-field coupling. We consider the effects of dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) between the three-level atoms and show how the presence of DDI strongly influences the multiphoton blockade. For symmetric coupling of the atoms with the field, the DDI induces an asymmetry in the emission spectra as a function of pump field detuning. At positive detuning, the single-photon blockade gets stronger as a function of DDI strength, leading to photon antibunching. However, it becomes weaker at negative detuning and can also completely vanish. We show that this vanishing single-photon blockade is associated with a strong two-photon blockade, leading to two-photon bunching. Therefore, by just tuning the frequency of the pump field, we can achieve two very distinct features. We also study the effects of DDI when the atoms are asymmetrically coupled with the field and show that the proposed system exhibits two-photon bunching. We believe our results are important for the experimental realization of such systems where DDI may be present.

Multiphoton blockade in the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model

Fen Zou, Xiaoya Zhang, Xun‐Wei Xu +2 more

We study multiphoton blockade and photon-induced tunneling effects in the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model, where a single-mode cavity field and a two-level atom are coupled via a two-photon interaction. We consider both the cavity-field-driving and the atom-driving cases and find that single-photon blockade and photon-induced tunneling effects can be observed when the cavity mode is driven, while the two-photon blockade effect appears when the atom is driven. For the atom-driving case (the two-photon transition process), we present a criterion of the correlation functions for the multiphoton blockade effect. Specifically, we show that quantum interference can enhance the photon blockade effect in the single-photon cavity-field-driving case. Our results are confirmed by analytically and numerically calculating the correlation function of the cavity-field mode. Our work has potential applications in quantum information processing and paves the way for the study of multiphoton quantum coherent devices.

Unconventional photon blockade in cavity QED with parametric amplification

Madan Mohan Mahana, Sanket Das, Tarak Nath Dey

We theoretically investigate the quantum-interference-induced photon blockade effect in a single two-level atom-cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) system with degenerate parametric amplification. The analytical calculations reveal the optimal parametric gain and phase parameters for achieving optimum unconventional photon blockade conditions. Under the optimal parameter regime, the numerical results of the second-order correlation function demonstrate strong photon antibunching consistent with the analytical results. Furthermore, the numerical results corroborate that coherently driving the atom leads to a stronger photon blockade than a coherently driven cavity with the optimal parameters. We numerically demonstrate that the UPB effect is compromised by a non-zero cavity-atom coupling in the cavity-driven configuration. However, stronger photon antibunching can be attained with a non-zero cavity-atom coupling in the atom-driven configuration. This work may be suitable for experimentally realising a strongly antibunched single-photon source for applications in quantum technology.
