Entanglement entropy at CFT junctions

Abstract

We consider entanglement through permeable junctions of $N$ ($1+1$)-dimensional free boson and free fermion conformal field theories. In the folded picture we constrain the form of the general boundary state. We calculate replicated partition functions with interface operators inserted in the partially-folded picture, from which the entanglement entropy is calculated. The functional form of the universal and constant terms are the same as the $N=2$ case, depending only of the total transmission of the junction and the unit volume of the zero mode lattice. For $N>2$ we see a subleading divergent term which does not depend on the parameters of the junction. For $N=3$ we consider some specific geometries and discuss various limits.

Conformal Junctions, Entanglement Entropy, and Holography

John David Miller

We explore interfaces and junctions joining multiple two-dimensional conformal field theories, with the goal of calculating entanglement entropies in their presence and exploring their holographic duals. In chapter 1 we start with an overview of the three subjects, collecting various well-known results and reviewing some foundational works. In chapter 2 we calculate the holographic entanglement entropy in the presence of a conformal interface for a geometric configuration in which the entangling region lies on one side of the interface. For the supersymmetric Janus solution we find exact agreement between the holographic and conformal field theory calculation of the entanglement entropy. In chapter 3 we calculate the entanglement entropy for topological interfaces in rational conformal field theories for the case where the interface lies at the boundary of the entangling interval and for the case where it is located in the center of the entangling interval. We compare the results to each other and also to the left/right entropy of a related boundary conformal field theory. We also comment on the entanglement entropies for topological interfaces in Liouville theory. In chapter 4 we consider entanglement through permeable junctions of N free boson and free fermion conformal field theories. We constrain the form of the general boundary state and calculate the replicated partition functions with interface operators inserted, from which the entanglement entropy is calculated. We find the functional form of the universal and constant terms to be similar to the N=2 case, depending only of the total transmission of the junction and the unit volume of the zero mode lattice. For N>2 we see a subleading divergent term which does not depend on the parameters of the junction. For N=3 we consider some specific geometries and discuss various limits. In chapter 5 we investigate topological interfaces between three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theories in the context of the AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence. We show that it is possible to connect the topological interfaces in the bulk Chern-Simons theory to topological interfaces in the dual conformal field theory on the boundary. In addition to the [U(1)]^{2N} Chern-Simons theory on AdS_3, we show that it is possible to find boundary counter terms which lead to the N conserved currents in the dual two-dimensional conformal field theory.

Rényi entropy and negativity for massless Dirac fermions at conformal interfaces and junctions

Luca Capizzi, Sara Murciano, Pasquale Calabrese

Abstract We investigate the ground state of a (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) built withMspecies of massless free Dirac fermions coupled at one boundary point via a conformal junction/interface. Each CFT represents a wire of finite lengthL. We develop a systematic strategy to compute the Rényi entropies for a generic bipartition between the wires and the entanglement negativity between two non-complementary sets of wires. Both these entanglement measures turn out to grow logarithmically withLwith an exactly calculated universal prefactor depending on the details of the junction and of the bipartition. These analytic predictions are tested numerically for junctions of free Fermi gases, finding perfect agreement.

Left-right entanglement entropy of boundary states

Leopoldo A. Pando Zayas, Norma Quiroz

We study entanglement entropy of boundary states in a free bosonic conformal field theory. A boundary state can be thought of as composed of a particular combination of left and right-moving modes of the two-dimensional conformal field theory. We investigate the reduced density matrix obtained by tracing over the right-moving modes in various boundary states. We consider Dirichlet and Neumann boundary states of a free noncompact as well as a compact boson. The results for the entanglement entropy indicate that the reduced system can be viewed as a thermal CFT gas. Our findings are in agreement and generalize results in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory where coherent states can also be considered. In the compact case we verify that the entanglement entropy expressions are consistent with T-duality.

Thermal entanglement in conformal junctions

Luca Capizzi, Andrei Rotaru

A bstract We consider a quantum junction described by a 1+1-dimensional boundary conformal field theory (BCFT). Our analysis focuses on correlations emerging at finite temperature, achieved through the computation of entanglement measures. Our approach relies on characterizing correlation functions of twist fields using BCFT techniques. We provide non-perturbative predictions for the crossover between low and high temperatures. An intriguing interplay between bulk and boundary effects, associated with the bulk/boundary scaling dimensions of the fields above, is found. In particular, the entanglement entropy is primarily influenced by bulk thermal fluctuations, exhibiting extensiveness for large system sizes with a prefactor independent of the scattering properties of the defect. In contrast, negativity is governed by fluctuations across the entangling points only, adhering to an area law; its value depends non-trivially on the defect, and it diverges logarithmically as the temperature is decreased. To validate our predictions, we numerically check them for free fermions on the lattice, finding good agreement.

Generalizing the entanglement entropy of singular regions in conformal field theories

Pablo Bueno, Horacio Casini, William Witczak‐Krempa

A bstract We study the structure of divergences and universal terms of the entanglement and Rényi entropies for singular regions. First, we show that for (3 + 1)-dimensional free conformal field theories (CFTs), entangling regions emanating from vertices give rise to a universal contribution $$ {S}_n^{\mathrm{univ}}=-\frac{1}{8\pi }{f}_b(n){\int}_{\gamma }{k}^2{\log}^2\left(R/\delta \right) $$ S n univ = − 1 8 π f b n ∫ γ k 2 log 2 R / δ , where γ is the curve formed by the intersection of the entangling surface with a unit sphere centered at the vertex, and k the trace of its extrinsic curvature. While for circular and elliptic cones this term reproduces the general-CFT result, it vanishes for polyhedral corners. For those, we argue that the universal contribution, which is logarithmic, is not controlled by a local integral, but rather it depends on details of the CFT in a complicated way. We also study the angle dependence for the entanglement entropy of wedge singularities in 3+1 dimensions. This is done for general CFTs in the smooth limit, and using free and holographic CFTs at generic angles. In the latter case, we show that the wedge contribution is not proportional to the entanglement entropy of a corner region in the (2 + 1)-dimensional holographic CFT. Finally, we show that the mutual information of two regions that touch at a point is not necessarily divergent, as long as the contact is through a sufficiently sharp corner. Similarly, we provide examples of singular entangling regions which do not modify the structure of divergences of the entanglement entropy compared with smooth surfaces.
