Abstract

Fulde-Ferrell (FF) Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) phases were proposed for superconductors or superfluids in a strong magnetic field. With the experimental progress in ultracold atomic systems, topological FFLO phases have also been put forward since it is a natural consequence of realizable spin-orbital coupling (SOC). In this paper, we theoretically investigate a triangular lattice model with SOC and an in-plane field. By constructing the phase diagram, we show that it produces gapped and gapless topological FF phases with Chern numbers $C=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1,\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2,\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{-}3$, and $\ensuremath{-}4$. We get the phase boundaries by the change in the sign of the Pfaffian. The chiral edge states for different topological FF phases also are elucidated.

Pairing Symmetry, Phase diagram and Edge Modes in Topological Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Phase

Chan Chun Fai, Ming Gong

The realizations of spin-orbit coupling in cold atoms lead to a burst of research activities in the searching of topological matters in ultracold atom systems. The very recent theoretical predictions show that topological Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluids can be realized with proper spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman fields. In this work, a comprehensive understanding of the pairing symmetry, phase diagram and the edge modes in this new topological matter are presented. The momentum of the Cooper pairs plays the role of renormalizing the in-plane Zeeman field and chemical potential. The in-plane Zeeman field and finite momentum pairing induce asymmetry to the effective $p$-wave pairing, apart from a small fraction of higher orbital components. The phase diagram is composed by different phases, which are determined by the topology and band gap nature of the superfluids. Especially, the gapped and gapless topological FFLO phase have totally different finite size effect. These novel features show that the spin-orbit coupled cold atoms provides an important platform in realizing topological matters which may not be materialized with solids.

Pairing symmetry, phase diagram, and edge modes in the topological Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase

Chun Fai Chan, Ming Gong

The realizations of spin-orbit coupling in cold atoms lead to a burst of research activities in the searching of topological matters in ultracold atom systems. Recent theoretical predictions show that topological Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluids can be realized with appropriate spin-orbit coupling and in-plane Zeeman fields. In this work, a comprehensive understanding of the pairing symmetry, phase diagram, and the edge modes in this topological matter are presented. The center-of-mass momentum of the Cooper pairs plays the role of renormalizing the in-plane Zeeman fields and chemical potential. The in-plane Zeeman fields also induce asymmetry to the effective $p$-wave pairing, apart from a small fraction of higher orbital components. As a result, the phase diagram is composed by different phases, which are determined by the Fermi surface topology and band gap width of the superfluids. Topological Fulde–Ferrell superfluids of a spin–orbit coupled Fermi gas

Yong Xu, Chuanwei Zhang

Topological Fermi superfluids have played the central role in various fields of physics. However, all previous studies focus on the cases where Cooper pairs have zero center-of-mass momenta (i.e., normal superfluids). The topology of Fulde–Ferrell (FF) superfluids with nonzero momentum pairings have never been explored until recent findings that FF superfluids in a spin–orbit (SO) coupled Fermi gas can accommodate Majorana fermions in real space in low dimensions and Weyl fermions in momentum space in three dimension. In this review, we first discuss the mechanism of pairings in SO coupled Fermi gases in optical lattices subject to Zeeman fields, showing that SO coupling as well as Zeeman fields enhance FF states while suppress Larkin–Ovchinnikov states. We then present the low temperature phase diagram including both FF superfluids and topological FF superfluids phases in both two dimension and three dimension. In one dimension, Majorana fermions as well as phase dependent order parameter are visualized. In three dimension, we show the properties of Weyl fermions in momentum space such as anisotropic linear dispersion, Fermi arch, and gaplessness away from k⊥ = 0. Finally, we discuss some possible methods to probe FF superfluids and topological FF superfluids in cold atom systems.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state to topological superfluidity transition in bilayer spin-orbit-coupled degenerate Fermi gases

Liang‐Liang Wang, Qing Sun, W.-M. Liu +2 more

Recently a scheme has been proposed for generating the two-dimensional Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for ultracold atomic bosons in a bilayer geometry [S.-W. Su et al., Phys. Rev. A 93, 053630 (2016)]. Here we investigate the superfluidity properties of a degenerate Fermi gas affected by the SOC in such a bilayer system. We demonstrate that a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state appears in the regime of small to moderate atom-light coupling. In contrast to the ordinary SOC, the FFLO state emerges in the bilayer system without adding any external fields or spin polarization. As the atom-light coupling increases, the system can transit from the FFLO state to a topological superfluid state. These findings are also confirmed by the Bogoliubov---de Gennes simulations with a weak harmonic trap added.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Phase Transition in 2D Spin-Orbit-Coupled Fulde-Ferrell Superfluids

Yong Xu, Chuanwei Zhang

The experimental observation of traditional Zeeman-field induced Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluids has been hindered by various challenges, in particular, the requirement of low dimensional systems. In 2D, finite temperature phase fluctuations lead to an extremely small Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature for FFLO superfluids, raising serious concerns regarding their experimental observability. Recently, it was shown that FFLO superfluids can be realized using a Rashba spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas subject to Zeeman fields, which may also support topological excitations such as Majorana fermions in 2D. Here we address the finite temperature BKT transition issue in this system, which may exhibit gapped, gapless, topological, and gapless topological FF phases. We find a large BKT transition temperature due to large effective superfluid densities, making it possible to observe 2D FF superfluids at finite temperature. In addition, we show that gapless FF superfluids can be stable due to their positive superfluid densities. These findings pave the way for the experimental observation of 2D gapped and gapless FF superfluids and their associated topological excitations at finite temperature.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Superfluids with $P$-wave Symmetry in Spinless Fermionic Optical Lattices

Zhen-Fei Zheng, Zhen Zheng, Xu‐Bo Zou +1 more

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, whose Cooper pairing hosts a non-zero center-of-mass momentum, is predicted and well studied in spin-singlet superfluids in past decades. Different from previous works that engineer FFLO superfluids in spinful cold atoms, we show that the FFLO superfluids, with $p$-wave symmetry, can emerge in a spinless environment associated with nearest-neighbor-site interactions. The novel mechanism of the FFLO superfluids lies on the split Fermi surfaces at low filling factor, which naturally gives rise to Cooper pairings with finite momentum. The phase transition is accompanied by changed Chern numbers, in which, different from the conventional picture, the band gap does not close. The exotic topological transition can be explained by the spontaneously-broken translational invariance of order parameters. Finally, we investigate the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature of the FFLO state, and show its possibility to be observed at finite temperature.
