Exact Results for Quenched Bond Randomness at Criticality

Abstract

We introduce an exact replica method for the study of critical systems with quenched bond randomness in two dimensions. For the q-state Potts model, we show that a line of renormalization group fixed points interpolates from weak to strong randomness as q-2 grows from small to large values. This theory exhibits a q-independent sector, and allows at the same time for a correlation length exponent which keeps the Ising value and continuously varying magnetization exponent and effective central charge. These findings appear to solve long-standing numerical and theoretical puzzles, and to illustrate the peculiarities which may characterize the conformal field theories of random fixed points.

On superuniversality in the q -state Potts model with quenched disorder

Gesualdo Delfino, Elena Tartaglia

Abstract We obtain the exact scale invariant scattering solutions for two-dimensional field theories with replicated permutational symmetry S q . After sending to zero the number of replicas they correspond to the renormalization group fixed points of the q -state Potts model with quenched disorder. We find that all solutions with non-zero disorder possess q -independent sectors, pointing to superuniversality (i.e. symmetry independence) of some critical exponents. The solution corresponding to the random bond ferromagnet, for which disorder vanishes as q → 2 , allows for superuniversality of the correlation length exponent ν (Delfino 2017 Phys. Rev. Lett . 118 250601). Of the two solutions which are strongly disordered for all values of q , one is completely q -independent and accounts for the zero-temperature percolation fixed point of the randomly bond diluted ferromagnet. The other is the main candidate to describe the Nishimori-like fixed point of the Potts model with ± J disorder, and leaves room for superuniversality of the magnetic exponent η , a possibility not yet excluded by available numerical data.

Infinite randomness with continuously varying critical exponents in the random XYZ spin chain

Brenden Roberts, Olexei I. Motrunich

We study the antiferromagnetic XYZ spin chain with quenched bond randomness, focusing on a critical line between localized Ising magnetic phases. A previous calculation using the spectrum-bifurcation renormalization group, and assuming marginal many-body localization, proposed that critical indices vary continuously. In this work, we solve the low-energy physics using an unbiased numerically exact tensor network method named the ``rigorous renormalization group.'' We find a line of fixed points consistent with infinite-randomness phenomenology, with indeed continuously varying critical exponents for average spin correlations. A self-consistent Hartree--Fock-type treatment of the $z$ couplings as interactions added to the free-fermion random XY model captures much of the important physics including the varying exponents; we provide an understanding of this as a result of local correlation induced between the mean-field couplings. We solve the problem of the locally correlated XY spin chain with an arbitrary degree of correlation and provide analytical strong-disorder renormalization group proofs of continuously varying exponents based on an associated classical random walk problem. This is also an example of a line of fixed points with continuously varying exponents in the equivalent disordered free-fermion chain. We argue that this line of fixed points also controls an extended region of the critical interacting XYZ spin chain.

Exact results for the O(N ) model with quenched disorder

Gesualdo Delfino, Noel Lamsen

Abstract We use scale invariant scattering theory to exactly determine the lines of renormalization group fixed points for O(N )-symmetric models with quenched disorder in two dimensions. Random fixed points are characterized by two disorder parameters: a modulus that vanishes when approaching the pure case, and a phase angle. The critical lines fall into three classes depending on the values of the disorder modulus. Besides the class corresponding to the pure case, a second class has maximal value of the disorder modulus and includes Nishimori-like multicritical points as well as zero temperature fixed points. The third class contains critical lines that interpolate, as N varies, between the first two classes. For positive N , it contains a single line of infrared fixed points spanning the values of N from $$ \sqrt{2}-1 $$ 2 − 1 to 1. The symmetry sector of the energy density operator is superuniversal (i.e. N -independent) along this line. For N = 2 a line of fixed points exists only in the pure case, but accounts also for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase observed in presence of disorder.

Two-dimensional Ising and Potts model with long-range bond disorder: A renormalization group approach

Francesco Chippari, Marco Picco, Raoul Santachiara

In this paper we provide new analytic results on two-dimensional q q -Potts models ( q ≥ 2 q ≥ 2 ) in the presence of bond disorder correlations which decay algebraically with distance with exponent a a . In particular, our results are valid for the long-range bond disordered Ising model ( q=2 q = 2 ). We implement a renormalization group perturbative approach based on conformal perturbation theory. We extend to the long-range case the RG scheme used in [V. Dotsenko et al., Nucl. Phys. B 455 701-23] for the short-range disorder. Our approach is based on a 2 2 -loop order double expansion in the positive parameters (2-a) ( 2 − a ) and (q-2) ( q − 2 ) . We will show that the Weinrib-Halperin conjecture for the long-range thermal exponent can be violated for a non-Gaussian disorder. We compute the central charges of the long-range fixed points finding a very good agreement with numerical measurements.

Criticality in the disordered N -color Ashkin–Teller model

Youssef Makoudi, Gesualdo Delfino A

Abstract The N -color Ashkin–Teller model corresponds to N Ising models coupled by four-spin interactions. We consider the two-dimensional case in presence of quenched disorder and use scale invariant scattering theory to determine all the solutions of the exact renormalization group fixed points equations. The weak disorder sector is characterized by a solution that, for any fixed N larger than 1, is a line of fixed points with Ising thermal exponents and continuously varying magnetic exponents. The number of fixed point solutions allowed by the symmetries of the model increases at strong disorder illustrating the growing dependence on the distributions of the two random couplings. The presence of some critical exponents which do not depend on the symmetry parameter N confirms this type of superuniversality as a peculiar feature of random criticality.

Exact results for spin glass criticality

Gesualdo Delfino A

Abstract In recent years scale invariant scattering theory provided the first exact access to the magnetic critical properties of two-dimensional statistical systems with quenched disorder. We show how the theory extends to the overlap variables entering the characterization of spin glass properties. The resulting exact fixed point equations yield both the magnetic and, for the first time, the spin glass renormalization group fixed points. For the case of the random bond Ising model, on which we focus, the spin glass subspace of solutions is found to contain a line of fixed points. We discuss the implications of the results for Ising spin glass criticality and compare with the available numerical results.
