Abstract

Based on full-wave scattering theory with self-consistent mean field approximation, we study the optical multi-stability of graphene-wrapped dielectric nanoparticles. We demonstrate that the optical bistability (OB) of the graphene-wrapped nanoparticle exist in both near-field and far-field spectra, and show the optical multi-stability arising from the contributions of higher-order terms of the incident external field. Moreover, both the optical stable region and the switching threshold values can be tuned by changing either the Fermi level or the size of the nanoparticle. Our results promise the graphene-wrapped dielectric nanoparticle a candidate of multi-state optical switching, optical memories and relevant optoelectronic devices.

Enhanced nonlinear optical response of core–shell graphene-wrapped spherical nanoparticles

Tayebeh Naseri, Mohsen Balaei

We study the nonlinear optical response of graphene in nanostructures. The spherical nanoparticle coated with a monolayer of graphene displays enhanced optical Kerr nonlinearity and, consequently, optical bistability and multistability in a broad range of incident optical intensity. This optical bistability significantly appertains on the geometry of the shell-coated nanoparticle, the fractional volume of the metallic core, as well as the core genre and Fermi energy of graphene. In particular, Fermi energy could also affect the optical bistability and induce switching from optical bistability to optical multistability. Due to the importance of core–shell nanoparticles, this model may find potential applications in optical bistable devices such as all-optical switches, optical transistors, and memories.

Tunable Optical Bistability, Tristability and Multistability in Arrays of Graphene

Xiuju Zhao, Bin Xu, Xiangna Kong +3 more

The optical bistability, tristability and multistability are explored in arrays of graphene. The arrays are periodically arranged spatially by single sheets of graphene. Optical bistability could be achieved with a strong enough incident intensity of light wave. The thresholds of optical bistability and the intervals between the upper and lower thresholds change with the surface conductivity of graphene and the incident wavelength. By increasing the intensity of incident light, tristability and multistability can be induced as well. Furthermore, the thresholds of bistability, tristability and multistability can be regulated via the chemical potential of graphene. This study may have potential applications in optical logic gates, all-optical switches and photomemory.

Bistable scattering in graphene-coated dielectric nanowires

Rujiang Li, Huaping Wang, Bin Zheng +3 more

In nonlinear plasmonics, the switching threshold of optical bistability is limited by the weak nonlinear responses from the conventional Kerr dielectric media. Considering the giant nonlinear susceptibility of graphene, here we develop a nonlinear scattering model under the mean field approximation and study the bistable scattering in graphene-coated dielectric nanowires based on the semi-analytical solutions. We find that the switching intensities of bistable scattering can be smaller than 1 MW cm−2 at the working frequency. To further decrease the switching intensities, we show that the most important factor that restricts the bistable scattering is the relaxation time of graphene. Our work not only reveals some general characteristics of graphene-based bistable scattering, but also provides a guidance to further applications of optical bistability in the high speed all-optical signal processing.

Broadened region for robust optical bistability in a nonlocal core and Kerr shell nanoparticle

Yang Huang, Lei Gao

With the self-consistent mean field approximation in the framework of full-wave nonlocal scattering theory, we carry out a theoretical study on the optical bistability in a nonlocal nanoparticle coated with a Kerr-type nonlinear shell. A nonlocality-enhanced Fano profile is found in its scattering spectrum. We demonstrate the nonlocality-broadened bistable region in the geometrical parameter space. We perform the investigation of the nonlinear dependences of the near-field intensity and far-field scattering on the incident wavelength and find the input-wavelength-controllable as well as the input-field-intensity-controllable scattering. We check the stability of the nonlinear steady states and perform its temporal dynamical evolutions.

Optical bistability in a nonlinear-shell-coated metallic nanoparticle

Hongli Chen, You‐Ming Zhang, Baile Zhang +1 more

We provide a self-consistent mean field approximation in the framework of Mie scattering theory to study the optical bistability of a metallic nanoparticle coated with a nonlinear shell. We demonstrate that the nanoparticle coated with a weakly nonlinear shell exhibits optical bistability in a broad range of incident optical intensity. This optical bistability critically relies on the geometry of the shell-coated nanoparticle, especially the fractional volume of the metallic core. The incident wavelength can also affect the optical bistability. Through an optimization-like process, we find a design with broader bistable region and lower threshold field by adjusting the size of the nonlinear shell, the fractional volume of the metallic core, and the incident wavelength. These results may find potential applications in optical bistable devices such as all-optical switches, optical transistors and optical memories.

Low-threshold optical bistability with multilayer graphene-covering Otto configuration

Hengliang Wang, Jipeng Wu, Jun Guo +3 more

In this paper, we propose a modified Otto configuration to realize tunable and low-threshold optical bistability at terahertz frequencies by attaching multilayer graphene sheets to a nonlinear substrate interface. Our work demonstrates that the threshold of optical bistability can be markedly reduced (three orders of magnitude) by covering the nonlinear substrate with multilayer graphene sheets, due to strong local field enhancement with the excitation of surface plasmons. We present the influences of the Fermi energy of graphene, the incident angle, the thickness of air gap and the relaxation time of graphene on the hysteresis phenomenon and give a way to optimize the surface plasmon resonance, which will enable us to further lower the minimal power requirements for realizing optical bistability due to the strong interaction of light with graphene sheets. These results are promising for realization of terahertz optical switches, optical modulators and logical devices.
