Abstract

The study of continuous phase transitions triggered by spontaneous symmetry breaking has brought revolutionary ideas to physics. Recently, through the discovery of symmetry protected topological phases, it is realized that continuous quantum phase transition can also occur between states with the same symmetry but different topology. Here we study a specific class of such phase transitions in 1 + 1 dimensions – the phase transition between bosonic topological phases protected by Z n × Z n . We find in all cases the critical point possesses two gap opening relevant operators: one leads to a Landau-forbidden symmetry breaking phase transition and the other to the topological phase transition. We also obtained a constraint on the central charge for general phase transitions between symmetry protected bosonic topological phases in 1 + 1 D .

Topological Phase Transitions

The study of continuous phase transitions triggered by spontaneous symmetry breaking has brought revolutionary ideas to physics. Recently, through the discovery of symmetry protected topological phases, it is realized that continuous quantum phase transition can also occur between states with the same symmetry but different topology. The subject of this dissertation is the phase transition between these symmetry protected topological states (SPTs). There are two main parts in this dissertation. In the first part we consider spatial dimension $d$ and symmetry group $G$ so that the cohomology group, $H^{d+1}(G,U(1))$, contains at least one $Z_{2n}$ or $Z$ factor. We show that the phase transition between the trivial SPT and the root states that generate the $ Z_{2n} $ or $Z$ groups can be induced on the boundary of a d+1 dimensional $G\\times Z_2^T$-symmetric SPT by a $Z_2^T$ symmetry breaking field. Moreover we show these boundary phase transitions can be ``transplanted'' to d dimensions and realized in lattice models as a function of a tuning parameter. The price one pays is for the critical value of the tuning parameter there is an extra non-local (duality-like) symmetry. In the case where the phase transition is continuous, our theory predicts the presence of unusual (sometimes fractionalized) excitations corresponding to delocalized boundary excitations of the non-trivial SPT on one side of the transition. This theory also predicts other phase transition scenarios including first order transition and transition via an intermediate symmetry breaking phase. In the second part, we study the phase transition between bosonic topological phases protected by $Z_n\\times Z_n$ in 1+1 dimensions. We find a direct transition occurs when $ n=2,3,4 $ and in all cases the critical point possesses two gap opening relevant operators: one leads to a Landau-forbidden symmetry breaking phase transition and the other to the topological phase transition. We also obtained a constraint($ c\\geq1 $) on the central charge for general phase transitions between symmetry protected bosonic topological phases in 1+1D.

Topological versus Landau-like phase transitions

Lokman Tsui, Fa Wang, Dung‐Hai Lee

The study of continuous phase transitions triggered by spontaneous symmetry breaking has brought new concepts that revolutionized the way we understand many-body systems. Recently, through the discovery of symmetry protected topological phases, it is realized that quantum phase transition between states with the same symmetry but different topology can also occur continuously. Here we ask "what distinguishes these two types of phase transitions".

Adventure in Topological Phase Transitions in 3 + 1 -D: Non-Abelian Deconfined Quantum Criticalities and a Possible Duality

Zhen Bi, T. Senthil

Continuous quantum phase transitions beyond the conventional paradigm of fluctuations of a symmetry-breaking order parameter are challenging for theory. These phase transitions often involve emergent deconfined gauge fields at the critical points as demonstrated in phase transitions between different broken-symmetry states of 2 þ 1-dimensional quantum magnets, as well as those between symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. In this paper, we present several examples of deconfined quantum critical points between SPT phases in 3 þ 1-D for both bosonic and fermionic systems. These critical theories can be formulated as non-Abelian gauge theories either in the infrared-free regime or in the conformal window when they flow to the Banks-Zaks fixed points. We explicitly demonstrate several interesting quantum critical phenomena. We describe situations in which the same phase transition allows for multiple universality classes controlled by distinct fixed points. We exhibit the possibility-which we dub "unnecessary quantum critical points"-of stable generic continuous phase transitions within the same phase. We present examples of interaction-driven, band-theory-forbidden, continuous phase transitions between two distinct band insulators. The understanding we develop leads us to suggest an interesting possible 3 þ 1-D field theory duality between SUð2Þ gauge theory coupled to one massless adjoint Dirac fermion and the theory of a single massless Dirac fermion augmented by a decoupled topological field theory.

Boundary-deconfined quantum criticality at transitions between symmetry-protected topological chains

Saranesh Prembabu, Ryan Thorngren, Ruben Verresen

Decades of research have revealed a deep understanding of topological quantum matter with protected edge modes. We report that even richer physics emerges when tuning between two topological phases of matter whose respective edge modes are incompatible. The frustration at the edge leads to novel boundary physics, such as symmetry-breaking phases with exotic non-Landau transitions---even when the edge is zero-dimensional. As a minimal case study, we consider spin chains with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ symmetry, exhibiting two nontrivial symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. At the bulk 1+1D critical transition between these SPT phases, we find two stable 0+1D boundary phases, each spontaneously breaking one of the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ symmetries. Furthermore, we find that a single boundary parameter tunes a non-Landau boundary critical transition between these two phases. This constitutes a 0+1D version of an exotic phenomenon driven by charged vortex condensation known as deconfined quantum criticality. This work highlights the rich unexplored physics of criticality between nontrivial topological phases and provides insights into the burgeoning field of gapless topological phases.

Quantum phase transitions between a class of symmetry protected topological states

The subject of this paper is the phase transition between symmetry protected topological states (SPTs). We consider spatial dimension d and symmetry group G so that the cohomology group, Hd+1(G,U(1)), contains at least one Z2n or Z factor. We show that the phase transition between the trivial SPT and the root states that generate the Z2n or Z groups can be induced on the boundary of a (d+1)-dimensional G×Z2T-symmetric SPT by a Z2T symmetry breaking field. One-dimensional symmetry protected topological phases and their transitions

Ruben Verresen, Roderich Moessner, Frank Pollmann

The authors present a unified perspective on a large class of one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological phases. Characterizing critical points between such phases leads to a conjecture of a topological lower bound on the central charge in terms of the phase-specific edge mode dimension.
