Abstract

In this paper, we present a simple analytical method for obtaining a nonspreading solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, which is given by the Airy function. The solution is derived by imposing a restriction on the phase factor of the ansatz that is taken to solve the differential equation. Considering at first the free particle, we show that nonspreading solutions can also be obtained for a time-dependent linear potential. The method is shown to work in both one and two dimensions, and can be easily extended if required. The applicability of the method is discussed in relation to the nonlinear case.

Exact solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in two dimensions

R. S. Kaushal

With a view to obtaining an exact analytic solution to the time-dependent Schr\"odinger wave equation for noncentral harmonic and anharmonic potentials in two dimensions, we make use of an ansatz for the eigenfunction in conjunction with the methods of Burgan et al. [Phys. Lett. 74A, 11 (1979)] and Ray [Phys. Rev. A 26, 729 (1982)]. While the method is found to work well for a restricted class of harmonic potentials, its limitations in the case of anharmonic potentials are pointed out.

Comment on “Solution of the Schrödinger equation for the time-dependent linear potential”

We present the correct way to obtain the general solution of the Schr\"odinger equation for a particle in a time-dependent linear potential following the approach used in the paper of Guedes [Phys. Rev. A 63, 034102 (2001)]. In addition, we show that, in this case, the solutions (wave packets) are described by the Airy functions.

Linear Potentials, Airy Wave Packets and Airy Transform

G. Dattoli, Жуковский Константин Владимирович

The solution of the Schrodinger equation with a linear potential is considered. We use algebraic methods to obtain the explicit form of the solution for the explicitly time dependent Hamiltonian and discuss the general conditions which allow us to get solutions in terms of the Airy functions, yelding non spreading wave packets. We analyze the relevant physical meaning of these solutions and give examples of their applications. We discuss the analogy between Airy and Gauss-Weirestrass transform.

Dispersive Airy packets

Antonio Boulhosa Nassar, José Maria Filardo Bassalo, Paulo de Tarso Santos Alencar

We present the solution of Schrödinger’s equation for time-dependent quadratic potentials in terms of an Airy packet. We demonstrate new features of the Airy packet in light of its apparent unfamiliar properties discovered by Berry and Balazs (who found a nonspreading and accelerating Airy packet to be a unique solution to the free-particle Schrödinger equation). Our solution, found using space-time scale transformations, not only overcomes the packet’s tendency to accelerate, but also make it possible to spread or contract in time.

Complete solution of the Schrödinger equation for the time-dependent linear potential

Mang Feng

The complete solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation for a particle with time-dependent mass moving in a time-dependent linear potential are presented. One solution is based on the wave function of the plane wave, and the other is in the form of the Airy function. A comparison is made between the present solution and former ones to show the completeness of the present solution.

Nonspreading wave packets in a general potential V(x,t) in one dimension

Chyi-Lung Lin, Meng-Jie Huang, Te-Chih Hsiung

We discuss nonspreading wave packets in one dimensional Schrödinger equation. We derive general rules for constructing nonspreading wave packets from a general potential $\textmd{V}(x,t)$. The essential ingredients of a nonspreading wave packet, the shape function $f(x)$, the motion $d(t)$, the phase function $ϕ(x,t)$ are derived. Since the form of the shape of a nonspreading wave packet does not change in time, the shape equation should be time independent. We show that the shape function $f(x)$ is the eigenfunction of the time independent Schrödinger equation with an effective potential $V_{\textmd{eff}}$ and an energy $E_{\textmd{eff}}$. We derive nonspreading wave packets found by Schrödinger, Senitzky, and Berry and Balazs as examples. We show that most stationary potentials can only support stationary nonspreading wave packets. We show how to construct moving nonspreading wave packets from time dependent potentials, which drive nonspreading wave packets into an arbitrary motion.
