Abstract

Abstract The evaluation of vacuum expectation values (VEVs) in massive integrable quantum field theory (QFT) is a nontrivial renormalization-group ‘connection problem’—relating large and short distance asymptotics—and is in general unsolved. This is particularly relevant in the context of entanglement entropy, where VEVs of branch-point twist fields give universal saturation predictions. We propose a new method to compute VEVs of twist fields associated to continuous symmetries in QFT. The method is based on a differential equation in the continuous symmetry parameter, and gives VEVs as infinite form-factor series which truncate at two-particle level in free QFT. We verify the method by studying U ( 1 ) twist fields in free models, which are simply related to the branch-point twist fields. We provide the first exact formulae for the VEVs of such fields in the massive uncompactified free boson model, checking against an independent calculation based on angular quantization. We show that logarithmic terms, overlooked in the original work of Callan and Wilczek (1994 Phys. Lett . B 333 55–61), appear both in the massless and in the massive situations. This implies that, in agreement with numerical form-factor observations by Bianchini and Castro-Alvaredo (2016 Nucl. Phys . B 913 879–911), the standard power-law short-distance behavior is corrected by a logarithmic factor. We discuss how this gives universal formulae for the saturation of entanglement entropy of a single interval in near-critical harmonic chains, including log log corrections.

Branch point twist field correlators in the massive free Boson theory

Davide Bianchini, Olalla A. Castro-Alvaredo

Well-known measures of entanglement in one-dimensional many body quantum systems, such as the entanglement entropy and the logarithmic negativity, may be expressed in terms of the correlation functions of local fields known as branch point twist fields in a replica quantum field theory. In this “replica” approach the computation of measures of entanglement generally involves a mathematically non-trivial analytic continuation in the number of replicas. In this paper we consider two-point functions of twist fields and their analytic continuation in the 1+1 dimensional massive (non-compactified) free Boson theory. This is one of the few theories for which all matrix elements of twist fields are known so that we may hope to compute correlation functions very precisely. We study two particular two-point functions which are related to the logarithmic negativity of semi-infinite disjoint intervals and to the entanglement entropy of one interval. We show that our prescription for the analytic continuation yields results which are in full agreement with conformal field theory predictions in the short-distance limit. We provide numerical estimates of universal quantities and their ratios, both in the massless (twist field structure constants) and the massive (expectation values of twist fields) theory. We find that particular ratios are given by divergent form factor expansions. We propose such divergences stem from the presence of logarithmic factors in addition to the expected power-law behaviour of two-point functions at short-distances. Surprisingly, at criticality these corrections give rise to a log⁡(log⁡ℓ) correction to the entanglement entropy of one interval of length ℓ. This hitherto overlooked result is in agreement with results by Calabrese, Cardy and Tonni and has been independently derived by Blondeau-Fournier and Doyon [25].

Universal properties of the entanglement entropy in quantum integrable models

Emanuele Levi

This thesis is a review of the works and ideas I have been developing in my doctoral studies, and it is mainly based on Castro-Alvaredo & Levi [2011]; Castro-Alvaredo et al. [2011]; Levi [2012]; Levi et al. [2013]. The specific aims of these works were to explore the methods developed in Calabrese & Cardy [2004]; Cardy et al. [2008] with the purpose of quantifying entanglement in a quantum field theory, and have a deeper understanding of their predicting power on lattice systems. The first chapter is meant to be a review of quantum entanglement in many-body physics, and the methods we use to establish the link to QFT. In the second chapter, after a small introduction on conformal field theory, we collect the results of Calabrese & Cardy [2004], focusing in particular on the replica trick and the twist field. The third chapter is devoted to adapting these tools to massive QFT, as performed in Cardy et al. [2008]. In particular we focus on the form factor program for the twist field, by means of which we are able to outline the behavior of entanglement entropy in massive theories in a non perturbative way. We expand on the results found in Castro-Alvaredo & Levi [2011], where higher particle form factors were studied for the roaming trajectory model, and the SU(3)2-homogenous sine-Gordon model. We then carry out a numerical study of the Δ-function of the twist field for these two models. In the fourth chapter we focus on the connection between the Δ-function of the twist field and Zamolodchikov c-function, as performed in Castro-Alvaredo et al. [2011]. In addressing this issue we perform a thorough study of the two point function of the twist field and the trace of the stress-energy tensor. This allows us to introduce a class of composite twist fields, which were the main topic of Levi [2012]. In the fifth and last chapter we group the most common methods used to study the entanglement entropy of quantum spin chains. We start with the XY chain analysis, which is performed with a combination of analytical and numerical methods based on free fermion techniques. We then perform a numerical study of the XXZ chain by means of the density matrix renormalization group approach. Eventually we present the results obtained for these two models in Levi et al. [2013].

U(1) symmetry resolved entanglement in free 1+1 dimensional field theories via form factor bootstrap

Dávid X. Horváth, Luca Capizzi, Pasquale Calabrese

Abstract We generalise the form factor bootstrap approach to integrable field theories with U(1) symmetry to derive matrix elements of composite branch-point twist fields associated with symmetry resolved entanglement entropies. The bootstrap equations are solved for the free massive Dirac and complex boson theories, which are the simplest theories with U(1) symmetry. We present the exact and complete solution for the bootstrap, including vacuum expectation values and form factors involving any type and arbitrarily number of particles. The non-trivial solutions are carefully cross-checked by performing various limits and by the application of the ∆-theorem. An alternative and compact determination of the novel form factors is also presented. Based on the form factors of the U(1) composite branch-point twist fields, we re-derive earlier results showing entanglement equipartition for an interval in the ground state of the two models.

Two-point functions of composite twist fields in the Ising field theory

Olalla A. Castro-Alvaredo, Michele Mazzoni

Abstract All standard measures of bipartite entanglement in one-dimensional quantum field theories can be expressed in terms of correlators of branch point twist fields, here denoted by and . These are symmetry fields associated to cyclic permutation symmetry in a replica theory and having the smallest conformal dimension at the critical point. Recently, other twist fields (composite twist fields), typically of higher dimension, have been shown to play a role in the study of a new measure of entanglement known as the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy. In this paper we give an exact expression for the two-point function of a composite twist field that arises in the Ising field theory. In doing so we extend the techniques originally developed for the standard branch point twist field in free theories as well as an existing computation due to Horváth and Calabrese of the same two-point function which focused on the leading large-distance contribution. We study the ground state two-point function of the composite twist field and its conjugate . At criticality, this field can be defined as the leading field in the operator product expansion of and the disorder field µ. We find a general formula for log 〈 T μ ( 0 ) T μ † ( r ) 〉 and for (the derivative of) its analytic continuation to positive real replica numbers greater than 1. We check our formula for consistency by showing that at short distances it exactly reproduces the expected conformal dimension.

Higher particle form factors of branch point twist fields in integrable quantum field theories

Olalla A Castro-Alvaredo, Emanuele Levi

In this paper we compute higher particle form factors of branch point twist fields. These fields were first described in the context of massive (1+1)-dimensional integrable quantum field theories and their correlation functions are related to the bi-partite entanglement entropy. We find analytic expressions for some form factors and check those expressions for consistency, mainly by evaluating the conformal dimension of the corresponding twist field in the underlying conformal field theory. We find that solutions to the form factor equations are not unique so various techniques need to be used to identify those corresponding to the branch point twist field we are interested in. The models for which we carry out our study are characterized by staircase patterns of various physical quantities as functions of the energy scale. As the latter is varied, the β-function associated with these theories comes close to vanishing at several points between the deep infrared and deep ultraviolet regimes. In other words, renormalization group flows approach the vicinity of various critical points before ultimately reaching the ultraviolet fixed point. This feature provides an optimal way of checking the consistency of higher particle form factor solutions, as the changes on the conformal dimension of the twist field at various energy scales can only be accounted for by considering higher particle form factor contributions to the expansion of certain correlation functions.
