Abstract

Motivated by the recent progress in the spin-orbit-coupled triangular lattice spin liquid candidate ${\mathrm{YbMgGaO}}_{4}$, we carry out a systematic projective symmetry group analysis and mean-field study of candidate $U(1)$ spin-liquid ground states. Due to the spin-orbital entanglement of the Yb moments, the space-group symmetry operation transforms both the position and the orientation of the local moments, and hence it brings different features for the projective realization of the lattice symmetries from the cases with spin-only moments. Among the eight $U(1)$ spin liquids that we find with the fermionic parton construction, only one spin-liquid state, which was proposed and analyzed by Yao Shen et al. [Nature (London) 540, 559 (2016)] and labeled as U1A00 in the present work, stands out and gives a large spinon Fermi surface and provides a consistent explanation for the spectroscopic results in ${\mathrm{YbMgGaO}}_{4}$. Further connection of this spinon Fermi surface $U(1)$ spin liquid with ${\mathrm{YbMgGaO}}_{4}$ and the future directions are discussed. Finally, our results may apply to other spin-orbit-coupled triangular lattice spin-liquid candidates, and more broadly, our general approach can be well extended to spin-orbit-coupled spin-liquid candidate materials.

Symmetric spin liquids on the stuffed honeycomb lattice

Jyotisman Sahoo, Rebecca Flint

We use a projective symmetry group analysis to determine all symmetric spin liquids on the stuffed honeycomb lattice Heisenberg model. This lattice interpolates between honeycomb, triangular, and dice lattices, always preserving hexagonal symmetry, and it already has one spin-liquid candidate, ${\mathrm{TbInO}}_{3}$, albeit with strong spin-orbit coupling not considered here. In addition to the stuffed honeycomb lattice itself, we gain valuable insight into potential spin liquids on the honeycomb and triangular lattices, as well as how they might be connected. For example, the sublattice pairing state proposed on the honeycomb lattice connects to the uniform spinon Fermi surface that may be relevant for the triangular lattice with ring exchange, while there are no spin liquids competitive on both the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ honeycomb and triangular lattice limits. In particular, we find three stuffed honeycomb descendants of the U(1) Dirac spin liquid widely believed to be found on the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular lattice. We also discuss how spin liquids near the honeycomb limit can potentially explain the physics of ${\mathrm{LiZn}}_{2}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$.

Spin Liquid versus Spin Orbit Coupling on the Triangular Lattice

Jason Iaconis, Chunxiao Liu, Gábor Halász +1 more

In this paper, we explore the relationship between strong spin-orbit coupling and spin liquid physics. We study a very general model on the triangular lattice where spin-orbit coupling leads to the presence of highly anisotropic interactions. We use variational Monte Carlo to study both U(1) U ( 1 ) quantum spin liquid states and ordered ones, via the Gutzwiller projected fermion construction. We thereby obtain the ground state phase diagram in this phase space. We furthermore consider effects beyond the Gutzwiller wavefunctions for the spinon Fermi surface quantum spin liquid, which are of particular importance when spin-orbit coupling is present.

Fermionic spin liquid analysis of the paramagnetic state in volborthite

Li Ern Chern, Robert Schaffer, Sopheak Sorn +1 more

Recently, thermal Hall effect has been observed in the paramagnetic state of volborthite, which consists of distorted kagome layers with $S=1/2$ local moments. Despite the appearance of magnetic order below $1\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$, the response to external magnetic field and unusual properties of the paramagnetic state above $1\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ suggest possible realization of exotic quantum phases. Motivated by these discoveries, we investigate possible spin liquid phases with fermionic spinon excitations in a nonsymmorphic version of the kagome lattice, which belongs to the two-dimensional crystallographic group $p2gg$. This nonsymmorphic structure is consistent with the spin model obtained in the density functional theory calculation. Using projective symmetry group analysis and fermionic parton mean field theory, we identify twelve distinct ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquid states, four of which are found to have correspondence in the eight Schwinger boson spin liquid states we classified earlier. We focus on the four fermionic states with bosonic counterpart and find that the spectrum of their corresponding root $U(1)$ states features spinon Fermi surface. The existence of spinon Fermi surface in candidate spin liquid states may offer a possible explanation of the finite thermal Hall conductivity observed in volborthite.

Classification of spin- 1 2 fermionic quantum spin liquids on the trillium lattice

Ming-Hao Li, Sounak Biswas, S. A. Parameswaran

We study fermionic quantum spin liquids (QSLs) on the three-dimensional trillium lattice of corner-sharing triangles. We are motivated by recent experimental and theoretical investigations that have explored various classical and quantum spin liquid states on similar networks of triangular motifs with strong geometric frustration. Using the framework of projective symmetry groups (PSG), we obtain a classification of all symmetric Z 2 and U ( 1 ) QSLs on the trillium lattice. We find two Z 2 spin-liquids, and a single U ( 1 ) spin-liquid that is proximate to one of the Z 2 states. The small number of solutions reflects the constraints imposed by the nonsymmorphic symmetries in the space group of the trillium lattice. Using self-consistency conditions of the mean-field equations, we obtain the spinon band-structure and spin structure factors corresponding to these states. All three of our spin liquids are gapless at their saddle points: one of the two Z 2 QSLs is nodal, while the U ( 1 ) case hosts a spinon Fermi surface. One of our Z 2 spin liquids hosts a stable gapless nodal star that is protected by projective symmetries against additions of further neighbor terms in the mean-field ansatz. We comment on directions for further work.

Instability of the U (1) spin liquid with a large spinon Fermi surface in the Heisenberg-ring exchange model on the triangular lattice

Jianhua Yang, Tao Li

It is widely believed that the $U(1)$ spin liquid with a large spinon Fermi surface (SFS state) can be realized in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{4}$ model on the triangular lattice, when the ring exchange coupling ${J}_{4}$ is sufficiently strong to suppress the ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ magnetic ordered state. This belief is supported by many variational studies on this model and seems to be consistent with the observations on the organic spin liquid materials such as $\ensuremath{\kappa}$-(BEDT-${\mathrm{TTF})}_{2}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{(\mathrm{CN})}_{3}$ and ${\mathrm{EtMe}}_{3}\mathrm{Sb}{[\mathrm{Pd}{(\mathrm{dmit})}_{2}]}_{2}$, which are systems close to their Mott transition and thus have large ${J}_{4}$. Here we show through systematic variational search that such a state is never favored in the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{4}$ model on the triangular lattice. Instead, a state with broken spatial symmetry is favored in the most probable parameter regime for the SFS state and has an energy much lower than that of the SFS state and other proposed variational states. More specifically, we find that for ${J}_{4}\ensuremath{\ge}0.09{J}_{1}$, the model favors a valence bond solid state with a $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}6$ period in its local spin correlation pattern and has a variational energy that is about $5%$ lower than that of the SFS state. This state is separated from the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux state for ${J}_{4}\ensuremath{\le}0.045{J}_{1}$ by an intermediate symmetry-breaking phase with a zigzag pattern in its local spin correlation. We find that the variational phase diagram we got is in qualitative agreement with that obtained from exact diagonalization on a $6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}6$ cluster.
