Abstract

We study the attractive Fermi mixture of a $^{6}\mathrm{Li}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{40}\mathrm{K}$ gas in one dimension using the continuous matrix product states variational ansatz and obtain the $T=0$ phase diagram. We predict an axial density profile that contains four distinct phases trapped induced along one-dimensional (1D) tubes, which is more intricate than those observed in 1D mass-balanced systems or in higher-dimensional gas clouds. The parameter regimes explored are realistic in view of possible future experiments. This is an application of continuous matrix product states to a nonintegrable fermionic system.

Phase equilibrium of binary mixtures in mixed dimensions

E. Malatsetxebarria, Francesca Maria Marchetti, Miguel A. Cazalilla

We study the stability of a Bose-Fermi system loaded into an array of coupled one-dimensional (1D) ``tubes,'' where bosons and fermions experience different dimensions: Bosons are heavy and strongly localized in the 1D tubes, whereas fermions are light and can hop between the tubes. Using the ${}^{174}$Yb-${}^{6}$Li system as a reference, we obtain the equilibrium phase diagram. We find that, for both attractive and repulsive interspecies interaction, the exact treatment of 1D bosons via the Bethe ansatz implies that the transitions between pure fermion and any phase with a finite density of bosons can only be first order and never continuous, resulting in phase separation in density space. In contrast, the order of the transition between the pure boson and the mixed phase can either be second or first order depending on whether fermions are allowed to hop between the tubes or they also are strictly confined in 1D. We discuss the implications of our findings for current experiments on ${}^{174}$Yb-${}^{6}$Li mixtures as well as Fermi-Fermi mixtures of light and heavy atoms in a mixed-dimensional optical-lattice system.

Analytical and numerical studies of Bose–Fermi mixtures in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Amin S. Dehkharghani, F. F. Bellotti, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner

Abstract In this paper we study a mixed system of bosons and fermions with up to six particles in total. All particles are assumed to have the same mass. The two-body interactions are repulsive and are assumed to have equal strength in both the Bose–Bose and the Fermi–Boson channels. The particles are confined externally by a harmonic oscillator one-body potential. For the case of four particles, two identical fermions and two identical bosons, we focus on the strongly interacting regime and analyze the system using both an analytical approach and density matrix renormalization group calculations using a discrete version of the underlying continuum Hamiltonian. This provides us with insight into both the ground state and the manifold of excited states that are almost degenerate for large interaction strength. Our results show great variation in the density profiles for bosons and fermions in different states for strongly interacting mixtures. By moving to slightly larger systems, we find that the ground state of balanced mixtures of four to six particles tends to separate bosons and fermions for strong (repulsive) interactions. On the other hand, in imbalanced Bose–Fermi mixtures we find pronounced odd–even effects in systems of five particles. These few-body results suggest that question of phase separation in one-dimensional confined mixtures are very sensitive to system composition, both for the ground state and the excited states.

Imbalanced thee-component Fermi gas with attractive interactions: Multiple FFLO-pairing, Bose-Fermi and Fermi-Fermi mixtures versus collapse and phase separation

Andreas Lüscher, Andreas Martin Läuchli

We present a detailed study of the population imbalanced three-component Hubbard chain with attractive interactions. Such a system can be realized experimentally with three different hyperfine states of ultra cold $^6$Li atoms in an optical lattice. We find that there are different phases that compete with each other in this system: A molecular superfluid phase in which the three fermion species pair up to form molecules (trions), a usual pairing phase involving two species with exactly opposite momenta, and a more exotic generalized Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase consisting of three competing pairing tendencies with different non-zero center-of-mass momenta. At large attractive interactions the system exhibits strong tendencies towards collapse and phase separation. Employing the density-matrix-renormalization-group-method (DMRG) to determine the decay exponents of the various correlators we establish the phase diagram of this model for different fillings and interactions. We also discuss the experimentally relevant situation in a trap and report the existence of an additional region where two species are dynamically balanced.

Phase separation of trapped spin-imbalanced Fermi gases in one-dimensional optical lattices

Fabian Heidrich‐Meisner, Giuliano Orso, Adrian E. Feiguin

We calculate the density profiles of a trapped spin-imbalanced Fermi gas with attractive interactions in a one-dimensional optical lattice, using both the local-density approximation (LDA) and density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) simulations. Based on the exact equation of state obtained by Bethe ansatz, the LDA predicts that the gas phase separates into shells with a partially polarized core and fully paired wings, the latter occurring below a critical spin polarization. This behavior is also seen in numerically exact DMRG calculations at sufficiently large particle numbers. We show that, unlike in the continuum case, the critical polarization is a nonmonotonic function of the interaction strength and vanishes in the limit of large interactions.

Two-component repulsive Fermi gases with population imbalance in elongated harmonic traps

Maria Colomé‐Tatché

We study the two-component repulsive Fermi gas with imbalanced populations in one dimension. Starting from the Bethe ansatz solution we calculate analytically the phase diagram for the homogeneous system. We show that three phases appear: the balanced phase, the fully polarized phase, and the partially polarized phase. By means of the local density approximation and the equation of state for the homogeneous system we calculate the density profile for the harmonically confined case. We show that a two-shell structure appears: at the center of the cloud we find the partially polarized phase and at the edges the fully polarized one. The radii of the inner and outer shells are calculated for different values of the polarization and the coupling strength. We calculate the dependence of the magnetization on the polarization for different values of the coupling strength and we show that the susceptibility is always finite.

Phase Separation in Mixtures of Repulsive Fermi Gases Driven by Mass Difference

Xiaoling Cui, Tin-Lun Ho

We show that phase separation must occur in a mixture of fermions with repulsive interaction if their mass difference is sufficiently large. This phenomenon is highly dimension dependent. Consequently, the density profiles of phase separated 3D mixtures are very different from those in 1D. Noting that the ferromagnetic transition of a spin-1/2 repulsive Fermi gas is the equal mass limit of the phase separation in mixtures, we show from the Bethe ansatz solution that a ferromagnetic transition will take place in the scattering states when the interaction passes through the strongly repulsive regime and becomes attractive.
