Abstract

In this paper, we consider periodicity for space-inhomogeneous quantum walks on the cycle. For isospectral coin cases, we propose a spectral analysis. Based on the analysis, we extend the result for periodicity for Hadamard walk to some isospectral coin cases. For non-isospectral coin cases, we consider the the system that uses only one general coin at the origin and the identity coin at the other sites. In this case, we show that the periodicity of the general coin at the origin determines the periodicity for the whole system.

Periodicity for the 3-state quantum walk on cycles

Takeshi Kajiwara, Norio Konno, Shohei Koyama +1 more

Dukes (2014) and Konno, Shimizu, and Takei (2017) studied the periodicity for 2-state quantum walks whose coin operator is the Hadamard matrix on cycle graph C_N with N vertices. The present paper treats the periodicity for 3-state quantum walks on C_N. Our results follow from a new method based on the cyclotomic field. This method gives a necessary condition for the coin operator for quantum walks to be periodic. Moreover, we reveal the period T_N of typical two kinds of quantum walks, the Grover and Fourier walks. We prove that both walks do not have any finite period except for N=3, in which case T_3=6 (Grover), =12 (Fourier).

Periodicity for the Hadamard Walk on Cycles

Norio Konno, Yuki Shimizu, Masato Takei

The present paper treats the period TN of the Hadamard walk on a cycle CN with N vertices. Dukes (2014) considered the periodicity of more general quantum walks on CN and showed T2=2, T4=8, T8=24 for the Hadamard walk case. We prove that the Hadamard walk does not have any period except for his case, i.e., N = 2,4,8. Our method is based on a path counting and cyclotomic polynomials which is different from his approach based on the property of eigenvalues for unitary matrix that determines the evolution of the walk.

Localization and recurrence of a quantum walk in a periodic potential on a line

Chung-I Chou, Choon-Lin Ho

We present a numerical study of a model of quantum walk in a periodic potential on a line. We take the simple view that different potentials have different affects on the way in which the coin state of the walker is changed. For simplicity and definiteness, we assume that the walker's coin state is unaffected at sites without the potential, and rotated in an unbiased way according to the Hadamard matrix at sites with the potential. This is the simplest and most natural model of a quantum walk in a periodic potential with two coins. Six generic cases of such quantum walks are studied numerically. It is found that, of the six cases, four cases display significant localization effect where the walker is confined in the neighborhood of the origin for a sufficiently long time. Associated with such a localization effect is the recurrence of the probability of the walker returning to the neighborhood of the origin.

Revivals in quantum walks with a quasiperiodically-time-dependent coin

Christopher Cedzich, Reinhard F. Werner

We provide an explanation of recent experimental results of Xue et al. [P. Xue, R. Zhang, H. Qin, X. Zhan, Z. H. Bian, J. Li, and B. C. Sanders, Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 140502 (2015)], where full revivals in a time-dependent quantum walk model with a periodically changing coin are found. Using methods originally developed for ``electric'' walks with a space-dependent, rather than a time-dependent, coin, we provide a full explanation of the observations of Xue et al. We extend the analysis from periodic time dependence to quasiperiodic behavior with periods incommensurate to the step size. Spectral analysis, one of the principal tools for the study of electric walks, fails for time-dependent systems, but we find qualitative propagation behavior of the time-dependent system in close analogy to the electric case.

Aperiodic space-inhomogeneous quantum walks: Localization properties, energy spectra, and enhancement of entanglement

A. R. C. Buarque, Wandearley S. Dias

We study the localization properties, energy spectra, and coin-position entanglement of the aperiodic discrete-time quantum walks. The aperiodicity is described by spatially dependent quantum coins distributed on the lattice, whose distribution is neither periodic (Bloch-like) nor random (Anderson-like). Within transport properties we identified delocalized and localized quantum walks mediated by a proper adjusting of aperiodic parameter. Both scenarios are studied by exploring typical quantities (inverse participation ratio, survival probability, and wave packet width), as well as the energy spectra of an associated effective Hamiltonian. By using the energy spectra analysis, we show that the early stage the inhomogeneity leads to a vanishing gap between two main bands, which justifies the predominantly delocalized character observed for ν<0.5. With increase of ν arise gaps and flat bands on the energy spectra, which corroborates the suppression of transport detected for ν>0.5. For ν high enough, we observe an energy spectra, which resembles that described by the one-dimensional Anderson model. Within coin-position entanglement, we show many settings in which an enhancement in the ability to entangle is observed. This behavior brings new information about the role played by aperiodicity on the coin-position entanglement for static inhomogeneous systems, reported before as almost always reducing the entanglement when comparing with the homogeneous case. We extend the analysis in order to show that systems with static inhomogeneity are able to exhibit asymptotic limit of entanglement.
