Abstract

Taking the decoherence into account, we investigate nonclassical features of the optical Schr\"odinger cat states in one-mode and two-coupled-modes systems with two-photon driving. In the one-mode system, the relationship between the Schr\"odinger cat states and the system parameters is derived. We observe that in the presence of single-photon decay the steady states would be a mixture of Schr\"odinger cat states. The dynamics and steady states of such a cat versus single-photon decay are examined. In the two-coupled-modes cases with linear and nonlinear couplings, the dynamics of entanglement and mutual information are examined with two different initial states and single-photon decay. Compared to the linear coupling case, more complicated structure appears in the Wigner function in the nonlinear coupling case. The joint quadrature distributions are also explored. Such nonclassical states can be used not only in exploring the boundary between the classical and the quantum worlds but also in quantum metrology and quantum information processing.

Quantum properties of a single-mode dissipative amplifier against Schrödinger-cat states

Faisal A. A. El-Orany, Jan Peřina, Vlasta Peřinová +1 more

In this paper we investigate the single-mode properties (Wigner function, photon-number distribution and quadrature squeezing) of a dissipative parametric amplifier when the signal and idler modes are initially prepared in the Schrödinger-cat states. We show that there are two sources producing decoherence in the system, which are spontaneous pump photon decay and interaction with the environment. For the latter case, the system collapses to both statistical mixture states as well as thermal states governed by the interaction parameters.

Non-classicality dynamics of Schrödinger cat states in a non-Markovian environment

Xiang Cheng, Shao-Hua Xiang, Yu-Jing Zhao

Abstract By virtue of the superoperator technique, we solve analytically the non-Markovian master equation that describes single-mode continuous variable system interacting with a structure reservoir. Our analytical solution allows us to investigate the non-Markovian effects on the dynamics of quantum coherence and non-classicality of Schrödinger cat states embedded in various types of structured reservoirs. We show that the dynamical behaviors of the fidelity, entanglement potentials, and higher-order antibunching of such states can be divided into two phases: they decay rapidly within a short time, but would either vanish completely or tend to a nonzero steady-state value in the long-time limit depending on the initial Schrödinger cat states and system parameters. We also show that by examining the Wigner function and higher-order sub-Poissonian statistics, the super-Ohmic environment can better help to protect the non-classicality, whereas the sub-Ohmic environment causes the disappearance of the non-classicality. Our approach is concise and can generalize to other open quantum system coupled to non-Markovian environment at finite-temperature or to linear non-Markovian Gaussian system.

Exact results for Schrödinger cats in driven-dissipative systems and their feedback control

Fabrizio Minganti, Nicola Bartolo, Jared Lolli +2 more

In quantum optics, photonic Schrödinger cats are superpositions of two coherent states with opposite phases and with a significant number of photons. Recently, these states have been observed in the transient dynamics of driven-dissipative resonators subject to engineered two-photon processes. Here we present an exact analytical solution of the steady-state density matrix for this class of systems, including one-photon losses, which are considered detrimental for the achievement of cat states. We demonstrate that the unique steady state is a statistical mixture of two cat-like states with opposite parity, in spite of significant one-photon losses. The transient dynamics to the steady state depends dramatically on the initial state and can pass through a metastable regime lasting orders of magnitudes longer than the photon lifetime. By considering individual quantum trajectories in photon-counting configuration, we find that the system intermittently jumps between two cats. Finally, we propose and study a feedback protocol based on this behaviour to generate a pure cat-like steady state.

Robustness of nonclassical superposition states against decoherence

Faisal A. A. El-Orany

We make a comparative study of quadrature squeezing, photon-number distribution, and Wigner function in a decayed quantum system. Specifically, for a field mode prepared initially the Schr\"odinger cat states interacting with a zero-temperature environment, we show that the rate of reduction of the nonclassical effects in this system is proportional to the occurrence of the decoherence process.

Two-mode photon added Schrödinger cat states: nonclassicality and entanglement

S. Nibedita Swain, Yashovardhan Jha, Prasanta Kumar Panigrahi

The concept of a photon added two-mode Schrödinger cat state in which both modes are independent is introduced, and their nonclassical properties and entanglement are studied. The introduced states emerge as eigenstates of f 1 f 2 a 1 a 2 , where f 1 , f 2 are nonlinear functions of the number operator, and a 1 , a 2 are annihilation operators. We study the evolution of these states under canonical transformation using the parity operator for the case of standard coherent states of the harmonic oscillator. The nonclassical properties of these states are evaluated especially by considering sub-Poissonian photon statistics and photon number distribution. Interestingly, the addition of photons leads to shifting the region in which photon number distribution shows oscillatory behavior. In addition, the entanglement of introduced states is quantitatively analyzed using concurrence. We observe that the state approaches maximum entanglement more rapidly after the addition of photons.

Mesures et états non-gaussiens en information quantique

Olivier Morin

In the present PhD work, we focus on a specific class of quantum states of light: the non-Gaussian states. These states have the particularity of exhibiting Wigner functions with some negative values. This quantum feature is a necessary condition to perform some quantum computation task; furthermore it is also useful for various other applications, including quantum communication and metrology. Different strategies can be used to generate these states. Here, we start from Gaussian states produced by optical parametric oscillators in the continuous wave regime, (i.e. single-mode and two-mode squeezed vacuum states). The non-Gaussian feature can only be obtained by non-linear phenomena (over-quadratic Hamiltonian). In our case, the non-linearity is induced by photon-counting-based measurements (also called non-Gaussian measurements). This study is mainly divided into two parts. First, the generation of non-classical states associated with two types of qubit encoding: the single-photon state, used for quantum information with discrete variables, and the coherent state superposition (the so-called optical Schrödinger cat state), used for quantum information with continuous variables. These two states have then been used to perform some quantum information protocols. The first one addresses the problem of single-photon entanglement witness, and the other the generation of entanglement between the two encodings (also called hybrid entanglement).
