Abstract

Bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases are bosonic analogs of free-fermion topological insulators and superconductors, but require interactions to be realized. Previously, a wide range of bosonic SPT phases protected by on-site symmetries has been systematically investigated, which are found to be related to group cohomology theory. However, a systematic understanding of SPT phases protected by spatial symmetries is still lacking. Here, the authors present systematic constructions of tensor-network wave functions for bosonic SPT phases protected by a general symmetry group SG involving both on-site and spatial symmetries. They find, in spatial dimension $d=1,2,3$, that a wide range of bosonic SPT phases are classified by the group cohomology ${H}^{d+1}$SG,U(1), in which the time-reversal symmetry and mirror symmetries should be treated as anti-unitary operations. They also provide generic tensor-network wave functions for these SPT phases that are useful for numerical simulations. As a by-product, the authors demonstrate a generic connection between rather conventional symmetry-enriched topological phases and SPT phases via an anyon condensation mechanism.

Symmetry-protected topological orders for interacting fermions: Fermionic topological nonlinear σ models and a special group supercohomology theory

Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Xiao-Gang Wen

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped short-range-entangled quantum phases with a symmetry $G$, which can all be smoothly connected to the trivial product states if we break the symmetry. It has been shown that a large class of interacting bosonic SPT phases can be systematically described by group cohomology theory. In this paper, we introduce a (special) group supercohomology theory which is a generalization of the standard group cohomology theory. We show that a large class of short-range interacting fermionic SPT phases can be described by the group supercohomology theory. Using the data of supercocycles, we can obtain the ideal ground state wave function for the corresponding fermionic SPT phase. We can also obtain the bulk Hamiltonian that realizes the SPT phase, as well as the anomalous (i.e., non-onsite) symmetry for the boundary effective Hamiltonian. The anomalous symmetry on the boundary implies that the symmetric boundary must be gapless for (1+1)-dimensional [(1+1)D] boundary, and must be gapless or topologically ordered beyond (1+1)D. As an application of this general result, we construct a new SPT phase in three dimensions, for interacting fermionic superconductors with coplanar spin order (which have ${T}^{2}=1$ time-reversal ${Z}_{2}^{T}$ and fermion-number-parity ${Z}_{2}^{f}$ symmetries described by a full symmetry group ${Z}_{2}^{T}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$). Such a fermionic SPT state can neither be realized by free fermions nor by interacting bosons (formed by fermion pairs), and thus are not included in the $K$-theory classification for free fermions or group cohomology description for interacting bosons. We also construct three interacting fermionic SPT phases in two dimensions (2D) with a full symmetry group ${Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$. Those 2D fermionic SPT phases all have central-charge $c=1$ gapless edge excitations, if the symmetry is not broken.

Quantum phase transitions between bosonic symmetry-protected topological phases in two dimensions: Emergent QED3 and anyon superfluid

Yuan-Ming Lu, D. H. Lee

Inspired by the Chern-Simons effective theory description of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in two dimensions, we present a projective construction for many-body wave functions of SPT phases. Using this projective construction, we can systematically write down trial wave functions of SPT phases on a lattice. An explicit example of SPT phase with U(1) symmetry is constructed for two types of bosons with filling ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{{b}_{1}}={\ensuremath{\nu}}_{{b}_{2}}=\frac{1}{2}$ per site on a square lattice. We study continuous phase transitions between different U(1)-SPT phases based on projective construction. The effective theory around the critical point is an emergent ${\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$ with fermion number ${N}_{f}=2$. Such a continuous phase transition, however, needs fine tuning, and in general there are intermediate phases between different U(1)-SPT phases. We show that such an intermediate phase has the same response as an anyon superconductor, and hence dub it ``anyon superfluid.'' A schematic phase diagram of interacting bosons with U(1) symmetry is depicted.

Towards a Complete Classification of Symmetry-Protected Phases for Interacting Fermions in Two Dimensions

Meng Cheng, Zhen Bi, Yi‐Zhuang You +1 more

Recently, it has been shown that two-dimensional bosonic symmetry-protected topological(SPT) phases with on-site unitary symmetry $G$ can be completely classified by the group cohomology class $H^3(G, \mathrm{U}(1))$. Later, group super-cohomology class was proposed as a partial classification for SPT phases of interacting fermions. In this work, we revisit this problem based on the mathematical framework of $G$-extension of unitary braided tensor category(UBTC) theory. We first reproduce the partial classifications given by group super-cohomology, then we show that with an additional $H^1(G, \mathbb{Z}_2)$ structure, a complete classification of SPT phases for two-dimensional interacting fermion systems for a total symmetry group $G\times\mathbb{Z}_2^f$ can be achieved. We also discuss the classification of interacting fermionic SPT phases protected by time-reversal symmetry.

General group super-cohomology theory of fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases

Qing-Rui Wang, Zheng‐Cheng Gu

The classification and lattice model construction of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting fermion systems are very interesting but challenging. In this paper, we give a systematic fixed point wave function construction of fermionic SPT (FSPT) states for generic fermionic symmetry group $G_f=\mathbb{Z}_2^f \times_{\omega_2} G_b$ which is a central extension of bosonic symmetry group $G_b$ (may contain time reversal symmetry) by the fermion parity symmetry group $\mathbb{Z}_2^f = \{1,P_f\}$. Our construction is based on the concept of equivalence class of finite depth fermionic symmetric local unitary (FSLU) transformations and decorating symmetry domain wall picture, subjected to certain obstructions. We will also discuss the systematical construction and classification of boundary anomalous SPT (ASPT) states which leads to a trivialization of the corresponding bulk FSPT states. Thus, we conjecture that the obstruction-free and trivialization-free constructions naturally lead to a classification of FSPT phases. Each fixed-point wave function admits an exactly solvable commuting-projector Hamiltonian. We believe that our classification scheme can be generalized to point/space group symmetry as well as continuum Lie group symmetry.

Topological Phases of Matter: Exactly Solvable Models and Classification

Zitao Wang

In this thesis, we study gapped topological phases of matter in systems with strong inter-particle interaction. They are challenging to analyze theoretically, because interaction not only gives rise to a plethora of phases that are otherwise absent, but also renders methods used to analyze non-interacting systems inadequate. By now, people have had a relatively systematic understanding of topological orders in two spatial dimensions. However, less is known about the higher dimensional cases. In Chapter 2, we will explore three dimensional long-range entangled topological orders in the framework of Walker-Wang models, which are a class of exactly solvable models for three-dimensional topological phases that are not known previously to be able to capture these phases. We find that they can represent a class of twisted discrete gauge theories, which were discovered using a different formalism. Meanwhile, a systematic theory of bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in all spatial dimensions have been developed based on group cohomology. A generalization of the theory to group supercohomology has been proposed to classify and characterize fermionic SPT phases in all dimensions. However, it can only handle cases where the symmetry group of the system is a product of discrete unitary symmetries. Furthermore, the classification is known to be incomplete for certain symmetries. In Chapter 3, we will construct an exactly solvable model for the two-dimensional time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors, which could be valuable as a first attempt to a systematic understanding of strongly interacting fermionic SPT phases with anti-unitary symmetries in terms of exactly solvable models. In Chapter 4, we will propose an alternative classification of fermionic SPT phases using the spin cobordism theory, which hopefully can capture all the phases missing in the supercohomology classification. We test this proposal in the case of fermionic SPT phases with Z2 symmetry, where Z2 is either time-reversal or an internal symmetry. We find that cobordism classification correctly describes all known fermionic SPT phases in space dimensions less than or equal to 3.

Minimalist approach to the classification of symmetry protected topological phases

Charles Zhaoxi Xiong

Abstract A number of proposals with differing predictions (e.g. Borel group cohomology, oriented cobordism, group supercohomology, spin cobordism, etc) have been made for the classification of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases. Here we treat various proposals on an equal footing and present rigorous, general results that are independent of which proposal is correct. We do so by formulating a minimalist generalized cohomology hypothesis, which is satisfied by existing proposals and captures essential aspects of SPT classification. From this hypothesis alone, formulas relating classifications in different dimensions and/or protected by different symmetry groups are derived. Our formalism is expected to work for fermionic as well as bosonic phases, Floquet as well as stationary phases, and spatial as well as on-site symmetries. As an application, we predict that the complete classification of 3D bosonic SPT phases with space group symmetry G is , where the H 1 term classifies phases beyond the Borel group cohomology proposal.
