Abstract

We give a pedagogical introduction of the stochastic variational method by considering the quantization of a non-inertial particle system. We show that the effects of fictitious forces are represented in the forms of vector fields which behave analogous to the gauge fields in the electromagnetic interaction. We further discuss that the operator expressions for observables can be defined by applying the stochastic Noether theorem.

Stochastic Variational Method as a Quantization Scheme II: Quantization of Electromagnetic Fields

Takeshi Kodama, Kazuo Tsushima

Quantization of electromagnetic fields is investigated in the framework of stochastic variational method (SVM). Differently from the canonical quantization, this method does not require canonical form and quantization can be performed directly from the gauge invariant Lagrangian. The gauge condition is used to choose dynamically independent variables. We verify that, in the Coulomb gauge condition, SVM result is completely equivalent to the traditional result. On the other hand, in the Lorentz gauge condition, SVM quantization can be performed without introducing the indefinite metric. The temporal and longitudinal components of the gauge filed, then, behave as c-number functionals affected by quantum fluctuation through the interaction with charged matter fields. To see further the relation between SVM and the canonical quantization, we quantize the usual gauge Lagrangian with the Fermi term and argue a stochastic process with a negative second order correlation is introduced to reproduce the indefinite metric.

Stochastic variational method as quantization scheme: Field quantization of the complex Klein–Gordon equation

T. Koide, T. Kodama

The stochastic variational method (SVM) is the generalization of the variational approach to systems described by stochastic variables. In this paper, we investigate the applicability of SVM as an alternative field-quantization scheme, by considering the complex Klein–Gordon equation. There, the Euler–Lagrangian equation for the stochastic field variables leads to the functional Schrödinger equation, which can be interpreted as the Euler (ideal fluid) equation in the functional space. The present formulation is a quantization scheme based on commutable variables, so that there appears no ambiguity associated with the ordering of operators, e.g., in the definition of Noether charges.

Lagrangian variational principle in stochastic mechanics: Gauge structure and stability

Maria I. Loffredo, Laura M. Morato

The Lagrangian variational principle with the classical action leads, in stochastic mechanics, to Madelung’s fluid equations, if only irrotational velocity fields are allowed, while new dynamical equations arise if rotational velocity fields are also taken into account. The new equations are shown to be equivalent to the (gauge invariant) system of a Schrödinger equation involving a four-vector potential (A,Φ) and the coupled evolution equation (of magnetohydrodynamical type) for the vector field A. A general energy theorem can be proved and the stability properties of irrotational and rotational solutions investigated.

Relativistic diffusion equation from stochastic quantization

Peter O. Kazinski

The new scheme of stochastic quantization is proposed. This quantization procedure is equivalent to the deformation of an algebra of observables in the manner of deformation quantization with an imaginary deformation parameter (the Planck constant). We apply this method to the models of nonrelativistic and relativistic particles interacting with an electromagnetic field. In the first case we establish the equivalence of such a quantization to the Fokker-Planck equation with a special force. The application of the proposed quantization procedure to the model of a relativistic particle results in a relativistic generalization of the Fokker-Planck equation in the coordinate space, which in the absence of the electromagnetic field reduces to the relativistic diffusion (heat) equation. The stationary probability distribution functions for a stochastically quantized particle diffusing under a barrier and a particle in the potential of a harmonic oscillator are derived.

Stochastic quantization of interacting classical particles system

Antonio Maria Scarfone

Starting from a many-body classical system governed by a trace-form entropy we derive, in the stochastic quantization picture, a family of non linear and non-Hermitian Schroedinger equations describing, in the mean filed approximation, a quantum system of interacting particles. The time evolution of the main physical observables is analyzed by means of the Ehrenfest equations showing that, in general, this family of equations takes into account dissipative and damped effects due to the interaction of the system with the background. We explore the presence of steady states by means of solitons, describing conservative solutions. The results are specialized to the case of a system governed by the Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy.

Fluctuations as stochastic deformation

Peter O. Kazinski

A notion of stochastic deformation is introduced and the corresponding algebraic deformation procedure is developed. This procedure is analogous to the deformation of an algebra of observables like deformation quantization, but for an imaginary deformation parameter (the Planck constant). This method is demonstrated on diverse relativistic and nonrelativistic models with finite and infinite degrees of freedom. It is shown that under stochastic deformation the model of a nonrelativistic particle interacting with the electromagnetic field on a curved background passes into the stochastic model described by the Fokker-Planck equation with the diffusion tensor being the inverse metric tensor. The first stochastic correction to the Newton equations for this system is found. The Klein-Kramers equation is also derived as the stochastic deformation of a certain classical model. Relativistic generalizations of the Fokker-Planck and Klein-Kramers equations are obtained by applying the procedure of stochastic deformation to appropriate relativistic classical models. The analog of the Fokker-Planck equation associated with the stochastic Lorentz-Dirac equation is derived too. The stochastic deformation of the models of a free scalar field and an electromagnetic field is investigated. It turns out that in the latter case the obtained stochastic model describes a fluctuating electromagnetic field in a transparent medium.
