Abstract

A symmetry-protected topological phase has nontrivial surface states in the presence of certain symmetries, which can either be gapless or be degenerate. In this work, we study the physical consequence of such gapless surface states at the bulk quantum phase transition (QPT) that spontaneously breaks these symmetries. The two-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki phase on a square lattice and its QPTs to Néel ordered phases are realized with the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a decorated square lattice. With large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that even though the bulk QPTs are governed by the conventional Landau phase transition theory, the gapless surface states induce unconventional universality classes of the surface critical behavior.

Surface critical behavior of coupled Haldane chains

Wenjing Zhu, Chengxiang Ding, Long Zhang +1 more

The nonordinary surface transitions at the ($2+1$)-dimensional quantum critical point precluded in the corresponding classical critical point have been found recently. The mechanism of such behavior that is only found in dimerized Heisenberg models to date is still under debate. To illuminate the role of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in inducing such nonordinary behaviors, we study a system on a two-dimensional square lattice consisting of interacting spin-1 Haldane chains, which has a genuine SPT phase---the Haldane phase---at weak interchain interactions and a quantum critical point, belonging to the classical three-dimensional (3D) O(3) universality class, to the N\'eel phase. Different from previously studied models, there is no dimerization in the current model. Cutting the system along the chain direction or perpendicular to the chain direction exposes two different surfaces. Using unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the two different types of surfaces show completely different surface critical behaviors at the bulk critical point, resulting from different surface states in the SPT phase. For the system with surfaces along the chain direction, the surface critical behavior is of ordinary type of the bulk 3D O(3) critical point, while for the surfaces perpendicular to the chain direction, the surface critical behavior is nonordinary, consistent with nonordinary transitions found in dimerized Heisenberg models. Our numerical results demonstrate that the gapless surface state in the gapped SPT phase together with the gapless mode of the critical point is a pure quantum scenario that leads to the nonordinary transition.

Extraordinary surface critical behavior induced by the symmetry-protected topological states of a two-dimensional quantum magnet

Zhe Wang, Fan Zhang, Wenan Guo

Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study spin-1/2 diagonal ladders coupled by ferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions. The model can also be viewed as usual ladders with ferromagnetic rung couplings coupled by antiferromagnetic diagonal couplings. We show that the model hosts a striped magnetic ordered phase and two topological nontrivial Haldane phases separated by two quantum critical points. We also show that the two quantum critical points are all in the three-dimensional O(3) universality class irrelevant to the topological properties of the Haldane phases. The properties of the surface formed by ladder ends in the two Haldane phases are studied, showing that the surface states are both gapless due to the symmetry-protected topological bulk states. We further demonstrate that extraordinary surface critical behaviors occur at both critical points on such gapless surfaces without enhancing the surface coupling. Notably, the surface is not expected to be ordered in the three-dimensional classical O(3) critical point, suggesting that the topological properties of the Haldane phases are responsible for this surface critical behavior.

Bulk and surface critical behavior of a quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on two-dimensional coupled diagonal ladders

Zhe Wang, Fan Zhang, Wenan Guo

Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a two-dimensional lattice formed by coupling diagonal ladders. The model hosts an antiferromagnetic N\'eel phase, a rung singlet product phase, and a topological nontrivial Haldane phase, separated by two quantum phase transitions. We show that the two quantum critical points are all in the three-dimensional O(3) universality class. The properties of the two gapped phases, including the finite-size behavior of the string orders in the Haldane phase, are studied. We show that the surface formed by the ladder ends is gapless, while the surface exposed along the ladder is gapful in the Haldane phase. Conversely, in the gapped rung singlet phase, the former surface is gapped, and the latter is gapless. We demonstrate that, although the mechanisms of the two gapless modes are different, nonordinary surface critical behaviors are realized at both critical points on the gapless surfaces exposed by simply cutting bonds without fine-tuning the surface coupling required to reach a multicritical point in classical models. We also show that, on the gapped surfaces, the surface critical behaviors are in the ordinary class.

Spin quantum Hall effects in featureless nonfractionalized spin-1 magnets

Yuan-Ming Lu, D. H. Lee

The Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki state (or Haldane phase) in a spin-1 chain represents a large class of gapped topological paramagnets that host symmetry-protected gapless excitations on the boundary. In this work, we show how to realize this type of featureless spin-1 state on a generic two-dimensional lattice. These states have a gapped spectrum in the bulk, but they support gapless edge states protected by spin rotational symmetry along a certain direction, and they exhibit the spin quantum Hall effect. Using a fermion representation of integer spins, we show a concrete example of such spin-1 topological paramagnets on a kagome lattice, and we suggest a microscopic spin-1 Hamiltonian that may realize it.

Quantum phase transition and critical behavior between the gapless topological phases

Hao-Long Zhang, Han-Ze Li, Sheng Yang +1 more

The phase transition between gapped topological phases represents a class of unconventional criticality beyond the Landau paradigm. However, recent research has shifted attention to topological phases without a bulk gap, where the phase transitions between them are still elusive. In this work, based on large-scale density-matrix renormalization-group techniques, we investigate the critical behaviors of the extended quantum $XXZ$ model obtained by the Kennedy-Tasaki transformation. Using fidelity susceptibility as a diagnostic, we obtain a complete phase diagram, which includes both topological nontrivial and trivial gapless phases. Furthermore, as the $XXZ$-type anisotropy parameter $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ varies, both the critical points ${h}_{c}$ and correlation length exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}$ remain the same as in the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}=0$ case, characterized by $c=3/2$ (Ising plus free boson) conformal field theory. Our results indicate that fidelity susceptibility can effectively detect and reveal a stable unconventional critical line between the topologically distinct gapless phases for general $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$. This work serves as a valuable reference for further research on phase transitions within the gapless topological phase of matter.

Bulk and edge dynamics of a two-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model

Zenan Liu, Jun Li, Rui-Zhen Huang +3 more

We study the dynamical properties of both bulk and edge spins of a two-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model mainly by using the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo method with stochastic analytic continuation. In the deep AKLT phase, we obtain a spin spectrum with the flat band, which is a strong evidence for a localized state. Through the spectrum analysis, we see a clear continuous phase transition from the AKLT phase to the N\'eel phase in the model, and the energy gap becomes closed at the corresponding momentum point. In comparison with linear spin-wave theory, we find that there are strong interactions among magnons at high energies. With an open boundary condition, the gap of edge spins in the AKLT phase closes at both the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ point and the $\ensuremath{\pi}$ point interestingly to emerge into a flat-band-like Luttinger liquid phase, which can be explained by symmetry and perturbation approximation. This paper helps us to better understand the completely different dynamical behaviors of bulk and edge spins in the symmetry protected topological phase.
