Abstract

We study the universal contributions to the entanglement entropy (EE) of $2+1$-dimensional and $3+1$-dimensional holographic conformal field theories (CFTs) on topologically nontrivial manifolds, focusing on tori. The holographic bulk corresponds to anti--de Sitter-soliton geometries. We characterize the properties of these regulator-independent EE terms as a function of both the size of the cylindrical entangling region, and the shape of the torus. In $2+1$ dimensions, in the simple limit where the torus becomes a thin one-dimensional ring, the EE reduces to a shape-independent constant $2\ensuremath{\gamma}$. This is twice the EE obtained by bipartitioning an infinite cylinder into equal halves. We study the renormalization group flow of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ by defining a renormalized EE that (1) is applicable to general QFTs, (2) resolves the failure of the area law subtraction, and (3) is inspired by the F-theorem. We find that the renormalized $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ decreases monotonically at small coupling when the holographic CFT is deformed by a relevant operator for all allowed scaling dimensions. We also discuss the question of nonuniqueness of such renormalized EEs both in $2+1$ dimensions and $3+1$ dimensions.

Two-cylinder entanglement entropy under a twist

Xiao Chen, William Witczak‐Krempa, Thomas Faulkner +1 more

Abstract We study the von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropy (EE) of the scale-invariant theories defined on the tori in 2 + 1 and 3 + 1 spacetime dimensions. We focus on the spatial bi-partitions of the torus into two cylinders, and allow for twisted boundary conditions along the non-contractible cycles. Various analytical and numerical results are obtained for the universal EE of the relativistic boson and Dirac fermion conformal field theories (CFTs), the fermionic quadratic band touching and the boson with z = 2 Lifshitz scaling. The shape dependence of the EE clearly distinguishes these theories, although intriguing similarities are found in certain limits. We also study the evolution of the EE when a mass is introduced to detune the system from its scale-invariant point, by employing a renormalized EE that goes beyond a naive subtraction of the area law. In certain cases we find the non-monotonic behavior of the torus EE under RG flow, which distinguishes it from the EE of a disk.

On holographic entanglement density

Nikola I. Gushterov, Andy O’Bannon, Ronnie Rodgers

We use holographic duality to study the entanglement entropy (EE) of Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) in various spacetime dimensions d, in the presence of various deformations: a relevant Lorentz scalar operator with constant source, a temperature T , a chemical potential μ, a marginal Lorentz scalar operator with source linear in a spatial coordinate, and a circle-compactified spatial direction. We consider EE between a strip or sphere sub-region and the rest of the system, and define the “entanglement density” (ED) as the change in EE due to the deformation, divided by the sub-region’s volume. Using the deformed CFTs above, we show how the ED’s dependence on the strip width or sphere radius, L, is useful for characterizing states of matter. For example, the ED’s small-L behavior is determined either by the dimension of the perturbing operator or by the first law of EE. For Lorentz-invariant renormalization group (RG) flows between CFTs, the “area theorem” states that the coefficient of the EE’s area law term must be larger in the UV than in the IR. In these cases the ED must therefore approach zero from below as L→∞. However, when Lorentz symmetry is broken and the IR fixed point has different scaling from the UV, we find that the ED often approaches the thermal entropy density from above, indicating area theorem violation.

Renormalized entanglement entropy

Marika Taylor, William Woodhead

We develop a renormalization method for holographic entanglement entropy based on area renormalization of entangling surfaces. The renormalized entanglement en-tropy is derived for entangling surfaces in asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter spacetimes in general dimensions and for entangling surfaces in four dimensional holographic renor-malization group flows. The renormalized entanglement entropy for disk regions in AdS 4 spacetimes agrees precisely with the holographically renormalized action for AdS 4 with spherical slicing and hence with the F quantity, in accordance with the Casini-Huerta-Myers map. We present a generic class of holographic RG flows associated with deforma-tions by operators of dimension 3/2 < Δ < 5/2 for which the F quantity increases along the RG flow, hence violating the strong version of the F theorem. We conclude by explaining how the renormalized entanglement entropy can be derived directly from the renormalized partition function using the replica trick i.e. our renormalization method for the entangle-ment entropy is inherited directly from that of the partition function. We show explicitly how the entanglement entropy counterterms can be derived from the standard holographic renormalization counterterms for asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter spacetimes.

Renormalized Entanglement Entropy and general entropic c−function

Mitsutoshi Fujita A, Song He, Yuan Sun +1 more

Holographic entanglement entropy (EE) and its renormalized form in AdS solitons with gauge potential are computed across a range of dimensions. The renormalized EE is identified as a cutoff-independent universal component of EE. By taking into account Kaluza-Klein reduction and the constraints of the low-energy limit, the (d − 1)-dimensional renormalized EE is deduced from the odd-dimensional counterpart. The region associated with the shrinking circle, which is examined at large values of l is indicative of this relationship. Transitions of the minimal surface are from a disk-shaped to a cylindrical configuration as l increases. A quantum phase transition occurs at a critical subregion size, with the renormalized EE exhibiting non-monotonic behavior in the vicinity of this size. In all dimensions, massive modes become decoupled at the low energy limit, whereas degrees of freedom that include Wilson lines influence the behavior at smaller energy scales.

Bulk emergence and the RG flow of entanglement entropy

Thomas Faulkner

We further develop perturbative methods used to calculate entanglement entropy (EE) away from an interacting CFT fixed point. At second order we find certain universal terms in the renormalized EE which were predicted previously from holography and which we find hold universally for relevant deformations of any CFT in any dimension. We use both replica methods and direct methods to calculate the EE and in both cases find a non-local integral expression involving the CFT two point function. We show that this integral expression can be written as a local integral over a higher dimensional bulk modular hamiltonian in an emergent AdS space-time. This bulk modular hamiltonian is associated to an emergent scalar field dual to the deforming operator. We generalize to arbitrary spatially dependent couplings where a linearized metric emerges naturally as a way of efficiently encoding the field theory entanglement: by demanding that Einstein’s equations coupled to the bulk scalar field are satisfied, we show that EE can be calculated as the area of this metric. Not only does this show a direct emergence of a higher dimensional gravitational theory from any CFT, it allows for effective evaluation of the the integrals required to calculate EE perturbativly. Our results can also be interpreted as relating the non-locality of the modular hamiltonian for a spherical region in non-CFTs and the non-locality of the holographic bulk to boundary map.

Entanglement entropy of singular surfaces under relevant deformations in holography

Mostafa Ghasemi, Shahrokh Parvizi

In the vacuum state of a CFT, the entanglement entropy of singular surfaces contains a logarithmic universal term which is only due to the singularity of the entangling surface. We consider the relevant perturbation of a three dimensional CFT for singular entangling surface. We observe that in addition to the universal term due to the entangling surface, there is a new logarithmic term which corresponds to a relevant perturbation of the conformal field theory with a coefficient depending on the scaling dimension of the relevant operator. We also find a new power law divergence in the holographic entanglement entropy. In addition, we study the effect of a relevant perturbation in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity for a singular entangling surface. Again a logarithmic term shows up. This new term is proportional to both the dimension of the relevant operator and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also introduce the renormalized entanglement entropy for a kink region which in the UV limit reduces to a universal positive finite term.
