Abstract

In this paper, we examined a possibility of preservation of a substantially multimode radiation in a single cell of quantum memory. As a light source we considered a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO). As was shown in several studies, SPOPO radiation has a large number of the correlated modes making it attractive for the purposes of quantum communication and computing. We showed that these correlations can be mapped on the longitudinal spin waves of the memory cell and be restored later in the readout light. The efficiencies of the writing and readout depend on the mode structure of the memory determined by a mechanism of the light-matter interaction under consideration (the nonresonance Raman interaction) and by the profile of the driving light field. We showed that like the initial light pulse train, the restored one can be represented by a set of squeezed supermodes. The mapping of the quantum multimode correlations on the material medium offers opportunities to manipulate the quantum states within the memory cell followed by the reading of the transformed state.

Noiseless signal shaping and cluster-state generation with a quantum memory cell

In this article, we employ multimode radiation of a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO) to build a cluster state through a conversion on the base of a quantum memory cell. We demonstrate that by choosing an appropriate driving field we can ensure the effective writing of only one supermode from the entire set of the SPOPO squeezed supermodes. Further, by changing the driving field profile at the readout, we convert the time profile of the retrieved signal while maintaining its quantum state. We demonstrate the possibilities of using the presented scheme by the example of creating a four-mode linear cluster state of light.

Entangled states of signal pulses in multimode quantum memory

K. S. Tikhonov, T. Yu. Golubeva, Yu. M. Golubev

The possibility of preserving an entangled state of two signal pulses during writing and retrieval processes in a multimode quantum memory is investigated. Two stationary laser sources of light squeezed in two orthogonal quadratures are used for generation of the entangled state. “Carved out” pulses of appropriate duration are mixed on a symmetric beamsplitter, which allows obtaining the desired entanglement. It is assumed that each of the obtained entangled pulses is stored in a separate memory cell and subsequently retrieved from it. The obtained analytical expressions for Duan entanglement criterion are analyzed numerically for the case of broadband memory. It is demonstrated that the entanglement of pulses can be effectively preserved not only in the case of symmetric geometry of the experiment, wherein both pulses are written in two identical independent memory cells, but also in the case of different memory cells and even when one of the cells is absent completely. An important distinguishing feature of the problem under consideration, compared to the single mode case where high memory efficiency ensures good preservation of quantum properties of light, is the possibility of obtaining good preservation of entanglement at low memory efficiency (under shortened readout times).

High-speed spatially multimode atomic memory

T. Yu. Golubeva, Yu. M. Golubev, O. S. Mishina +3 more

We study the coherent storage and retrieval of a very short multimode light pulse in an atomic ensemble. We consider a quantum memory process based on the conversion of a signal pulse into a long-lived spin coherence via light matter interaction in an on-resonant $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ -type system. In order to study the writing and reading processes we analytically solve the partial differential equations describing the evolution of the field and of the atomic coherence in time as well as in space. We show how to optimize the process for writing as well as for reading. If the medium length is fixed, for each length, there is an optimal value of the pulse duration. We discuss the information capacity of this memory scheme and we estimate the number of transverse modes that can be stored as a quantum hologram.

Generation and characterization of multimode quantum frequency combs

R. Medeiros de Araújo, Olivier Pinel, Pu Jian +4 more

Multimode nonclassical states of light are an essential resource in quantum computation with continuous variables [1]. They can be generated either by mixing different squeezed light sources using linear optical operations [2], or directly in a multimode optical device [3, 4]. Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillators (SPOPO) — which correspond to an OPO pumped by a train of ultrashort pulses that are synchronized with the cavity round-trip time — have been theoretically shown to be promising devices for the generation of multimode nonclassical frequency combs, since a SPOPO is a sole optical cavity acting as an assembly of independent squeezers in a particular basis called the supermodes basis [5]. The supermodes are optical frequency combs with specific spectrum and phase profiles that are determined by the length of the intracavity nonlinear crystal and the pulse shape of the pump.

TOWARDS A MULTIMODE QUANTUM MEMORY FOR SINGLE PHOTONS

Lucile Veissier, A. Nicolas, Lambert Giner +6 more

In this paper, an optical memory based on an ensemble of cold Cesium atoms interacting with light in the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) regime is studied in view of spatially multimode quantum storage. The interfacing protocol involves a control field, generating EIT for the very weak field that carries the quantum signal to be stored and enabling its mapping into the collective hyperfine coherence of the cold atomic ensemble. For the demonstration of multimode storage, the signal pulse at the single photon level is prepared in a mode with (OAM), while the control field is in a TEM00 mode. After the writing process, the information is kept in the memory register. In the retrieval phase, the information is read back from atoms to light and we show that these pulses at the single photon level with OAM can be stored and retrieved with a preserved spatial phase and a good efficiency.

Effect of group-velocity dispersion on the generation of multimode pulsed squeezed light in a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator

Valentin Averchenko, Danil Malyshev, K. S. Tikhonov

Abstract Parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal is a widely employed technique for generating quadrature squeezed light with multiple modes, which finds applications in quantum metrology, quantum information and communication. Here we study the generation of temporally multimode femtosecond pulsed squeezed light in a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO) operating below the oscillation threshold, while considering the presence of non-compensated intracavity group-velocity dispersion. Based on the developed time-domain model of the system, we show that the dispersion results in mode-dependent detuning of the broadband supermodes of the pulsed parametric process from the cavity resonance due to temporal Gouy phase, as well as linear coupling between these supermodes. With perturbation theory up to the second order in the coupling coefficients between modes, we obtained a solution for the amplitudes of multiple supermodes given an arbitrary sub-threshold pump level. The dispersion affects the quantum state of the supermodes by influencing their squeezing level and the rotation of the squeezing ellipse. It also affects the entanglement among the supermodes, leading to reduced suppression of shot noise level as measured in the balanced homodyne detection scheme. Furthermore, our study highlights the potential of SPOPO with group-velocity dispersion as a testbench for experimental investigations of multimode effects in linearly evanescent coupled parametric oscillators.
