Abstract

We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy to investigate a polarized spin mixture of ultracold ^{6}Li atoms close to a broad Feshbach scattering resonance. Focusing on the regime of strong repulsive interactions, we observe well-defined coherent quasiparticles even for unitarity-limited interactions. We characterize the many-body system by extracting the key properties of repulsive Fermi polarons: the energy E_{+}, the effective mass m^{*}, the residue Z, and the decay rate Γ. Above a critical interaction, E_{+} is found to exceed the Fermi energy of the bath, while m^{*} diverges and even turns negative, thereby indicating that the repulsive Fermi liquid state becomes energetically and thermodynamically unstable.

Repulsive Fermi polarons and their induced interactions in binary mixtures of ultracold atoms

S I Mistakidis, G C Katsimiga, G M Koutentakis +1 more

We explore repulsive Fermi polarons in one-dimensional harmonically trapped few-body mixtures of ultracold atoms using as a case example a 6 Li- 40 K mixture. A characterization of these quasiparticle-like states, whose appearance is signaled in the impurity's radiofrequency spectrum, is achieved by extracting their lifetime and residua. Increasing the number of 40 K impurities leads to the occurrence of both single and multiple polarons that are entangled with their environment. An interaction-dependent broadening of the spectral lines is observed suggesting the presence of induced interactions. We propose the relative distance between the impurities as an adequate measure to detect induced interactions independently of the specifics of the atomic mixture, a result that we showcase by considering also a 6 Li- 173 Yb system. This distance is further shown to be indicative of the generation of entanglement independently of the size of the bath ( 6 Li) and the atomic species of the impurity. The generation of entanglement and the importance of induced interactions are revealed with an emphasis on the regime of intermediate interaction strengths.

Itinerant Ferromagnetism in a Polarized Two-Component Fermi Gas

Pietro Massignan, Zhenhua Yu, Georg M. Bruun

We analyze when a repulsively interacting two-component Fermi gas becomes thermodynamically unstable against phase separation. We focus on the strongly polarized limit, where the free energy of the homogeneous mixture can be calculated accurately in terms of well-defined quasiparticles, the repulsive polarons. Phase diagrams as a function of polarization, temperature, mass imbalance, and repulsive polaron energy, as well as scattering length and range parameter, are provided. We show that the lifetime of the repulsive polaron increases significantly with the interaction range and the mass of the minority atoms, raising the prospects of detecting the transition to the elusive itinerant ferromagnetic state with ultracold atoms.

Exploring Ultracold Collisions in Li6−Cr53 Fermi Mixtures: Feshbach Resonances and Scattering Properties of a Novel Alkali-Transition Metal System

A. Ciamei, Stefano Finelli, A. Trenkwalder +3 more

We investigate ultracold collisions in a novel mixture of ^{6}Li and ^{53}Cr fermionic atoms, discovering more than 50 interspecies Feshbach resonances via loss spectroscopy. Building a full coupled-channel model, we unambiguously characterize the ^{6}Li-^{53}Cr scattering properties and yield predictions for other isotopic pairs. In particular, we identify various Feshbach resonances that enable the controlled tuning of elastic s- and p-wave ^{6}Li-^{53}Cr interactions. Our studies thus make lithium-chromium mixtures emerge as optimally suited platforms for the experimental search of elusive few- and many-body regimes of highly correlated fermionic matter, and for the realization of a new class of ultracold polar molecules possessing both electric and magnetic dipole moments.

Observation of Coherent Multiorbital Polarons in a Two-Dimensional Fermi Gas

Nelson Darkwah Oppong, Luis Riegger, Oscar Bettermann +5 more

We report on the experimental observation of multiorbital polarons in a two-dimensional Fermi gas of ^{173}Yb atoms formed by mobile impurities in the metastable ^{3}P_{0} orbital and a Fermi sea in the ground-state ^{1}S_{0} orbital. We spectroscopically probe the energies of attractive and repulsive polarons close to an orbital Feshbach resonance and characterize their coherence by measuring the quasiparticle residue. For all probed interaction parameters, the repulsive polaron is a long-lived quasiparticle with a decay rate more than 2 orders of magnitude below its energy. We formulate a many-body theory, which accurately treats the interorbital interactions in two dimensions and agrees well with the experimental results. Our work paves the way for the investigation of many-body physics in multiorbital ultracold Fermi gases.

Repulsive polarons in alkaline-earth-metal-like atoms across an orbital Feshbach resonance

Tian-Shu Deng, Zhuocheng Lu, Yue-Ran Shi +3 more

We characterize properties of the so-called repulsive polaron across the recently discovered orbital Feshbach resonance in alkaline-earth-metal-like atoms. Being a metastable quasiparticle excitation at the positive energy, the repulsive polaron is induced by the interaction between an impurity atom and a Fermi sea. By analyzing in detail the energy, the polaron residue, the effective mass, and the decay rate of the repulsive polaron, we reveal interesting features that are intimately related to the two-channel nature of the orbital Feshbach resonance. In particular, we find that the lifetime of the repulsive polaron is nonmonotonic in the Zeeman-field detuning between the two channels, and has a maximum on the BEC-side of the resonance. Further, by considering the stability of a mixture of the impurity and the majority atoms against phase separation, we show that the itinerant ferromagnetism may exist near the orbital Feshbach resonance at appropriate densities. Our results can be readily probed experimentally, and have interesting implications for the observation of itinerant ferromagnetism near an orbital Feshbach resonance.

Observation of Fermi Polarons in a Tunable Fermi Liquid of Ultracold Atoms

André Schirotzek, Cheng-Hsun Wu, Ariel Sommer +1 more

We have observed Fermi polarons, dressed spin-down impurities in a spin-up Fermi sea of ultracold atoms. The polaron manifests itself as a narrow peak in the impurities' rf spectrum that emerges from a broad incoherent background. We determine the polaron energy and the quasiparticle residue for various interaction strengths around a Feshbach resonance. At a critical interaction, we observe the transition from polaronic to molecular binding. Here, the imbalanced Fermi liquid undergoes a phase transition into a Bose liquid, coexisting with a Fermi sea.
