Abstract

We report the coexistence and properties of stable compact localized states (CLSs) and discrete solitons (DSs) for nonlinear spinor waves on a flat-band network with spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The system can be implemented by means of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in the corresponding optical lattice. In the linear limit, the SOC opens a minigap between flat and dispersive bands in the system's band-gap structure, and preserves the existence of CLSs at the flat-band frequency, simultaneously lowering their symmetry. Adding on-site cubic nonlinearity, the CLSs persist and remain available in an exact analytical form, with frequencies that are smoothly tuned into the minigap. Inside of the minigap, the CLS and DS families are stable in narrow areas adjacent to the FB. Deep inside the semi-infinite gap, both the CLSs and DSs are stable too.

Discrete solitons of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Mario Salerno, F. Kh. Abdullaev

We study localized nonlinear excitations of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with spin-orbit coupling in a deep optical lattice (OL). We use Wannier functions to derive a tight-binding model that includes the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) at the discrete level in the form of a generalized discrete nonlinear Schödinger equation. Spectral properties are investigated and the existence and stability of discrete solitons and breathers with different symmetry properties with respect to the OL is demonstrated. We show that the symmetry of the modes can be changed from on-site to inter-site and to asymmetric modes simply by changing the interspecies interaction. Asymmetric modes appear to be novel modes intrinsic of the SOC.

Tunable spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in deep optical lattices

Mario Salerno, F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal +1 more

Binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped in deep optical lattices and subjected to equal contributions of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are investigated in the presence of a periodic time modulation of the Zeeman field. SOC tunability is explicitly demonstrated by adopting a mean-field tight-binding model for the BEC mixture and by performing an averaging approach in the strong modulation limit. In this case, the system can be reduced to an unmodulated vector discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a rescaled SOC tuning parameter $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, which depends only on the ratio between amplitude and frequency of the applied Zeeman field. We consider the attractive interaction case and focus on the effect of the SOC tuning on the localized ground states. The dependence of the spectrum of the linear system on $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ has been analytically characterized. In particular, we show that extremal curves (ground and highest excited states) of the linear spectrum are continuous piecewise functions (together with their derivatives) of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, which consist of a finite number of decreasing band lobes joined by constant lines. This structure also remains in the presence of inter- and intra-species interactions, the nonlinearity mainly introducing a number of localized states in the band gaps. The stability of ground states in the presence of the modulating field has been demonstrated by real-time evolutions of the original (unaveraged) system. Localization properties of the ground state induced by the SOC tuning, and a parameter design for possible experimental observation, have also been discussed.

Gap solitons and vortices in two-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates loaded onto moiré optical lattices

Li Wang, Zhenya Yan, Yi Zhu +1 more

Abstract In ultracold atomic gases, optical lattices and spin-orbit coupling are two important and useful linear means to study and control the nonlinear and quantum dynamics of matter waves, and both have been well realized in experiments. Here, nonlinear localization of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in moiré optical lattices is revealed theoretically, stressing the existence and stability of localized modes of diverse types including fundamental, half-vortex matter-wave gap solitons, and full-vortex ones (of both components). Notably, to our knowledge, a new type of vector vortex gap solitons, which is composed of a gap vortex soliton (singular mode) and a rhombic-array gap vortex (quadruple mode), is predicted in our two-component theoretical framework. It is also found that the model exhibits unique linear Bloch band structures including band splitting and extremely-flat bands, because of which all the predicted localized modes tend to be robustly stable, backed by our direct perturbed simulations. Our results demonstrate that the moiré pattern (and its joint cooperation with spin-orbit coupling) provides great possibilities to explore flat-band and moiré physics in ultracold atoms, and to further investigate the nonlinear dynamics.

Wannier solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices with a flat band

Chenhui Wang, Yongping Zhang, V. V. Konotop

We investigate families of soliton solutions in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate embedded in an optical lattice, which bifurcate from the nearly flat lowest band. Unlike the conventional gap solitons, the obtained solutions have the shape well approximated by a Wannier function (or a few Wannier functions) of the underlying linear Hamiltonian with amplitudes varying along the family and with nearly constant widths. The Wannier solitons sharing all symmetries of the system Hamiltonian are found to be stable. Such solutions allow for the construction of Wannier breathers that can be viewed as nonlinearly coupled one-hump solitons. The breathers are well described by a few-mode model and manifest stable behavior either in an oscillatory regime with balanced average populations or in a self-trapping regime characterized by unbalanced atomic populations of the local potential minima (similarly to the conventional boson Josephson junction), with the frequencies controlled by the interatomic interactions.

Flat bands and dynamical localization of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

F. Kh. Abdullaev, Mario Salerno

Flat bands and dynamical localization of binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates, with spin-orbit coupling subjected to a deep optical lattice which is shaking in time and to a periodic time modulation of the Zeeman field, are investigated. In contrast with usual dynamical localization in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, we find that to fully suppress the tunneling in the system the optical lattice shaking is not enough, and a proper tuning of the spin-orbit term, achievable via the Zeeman field modulation, is also required. This leads to a sequence of Zeeman parameter values where energy bands become flat, the tunneling in the system is suppressed, and the dynamical localization phenomenon occurs. Exact wave functions at the dynamical localization points show that the binary mixture localizes on a dimer with the two components occupying different sites. This type of localization occurs in exact form also for the ground state of the system at the dynamical localization points in the presence of nonlinearity and remains valid, although in approximate form, for a wide range of the Zeeman parameter around these points. The possibility of observing the above phenomena in real experiments is also briefly discussed.

Composite localized modes in discretized spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates

Petra P. Beličev, Goran Gligorić, Jovana S. Petrovic +3 more

Abstract We introduce a discrete model for binary spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates trapped in a deep one-dimensional optical lattice. Two different types of the couplings are considered, with spatial derivatives acting inside each species, or between the species. The discrete system with inter-site couplings dominated by the spin–orbit coupling (SOC), while the usual hopping is negligible, emulates condensates composed of extremely heavy atoms, as well as those with opposite signs of the effective atomic masses in the two components. Stable localized composite states of miscible and immiscible types are constructed. The effect of the SOC on the immiscibility–miscibility transition in the localized complexes, which emulates the phase transition between insulating and conducting states in semiconductors, is studied.
