Abstract

We investigate the energy dynamics in a generalized compass chain under an external magnetic field. We show that the energy current operators act on three contiguous sites in the absence of the magnetic field, and they are incorporated with inhomogenous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the presence of the magnetic field. Under these complex interactions the Hamiltonian remains an exactly solvable spin model. We study the effects of the three-site interactions and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on the energy spectra and phase diagram. The results have revealed that the energy current of the pristine quantum compass model is conserved due to the associated intermediate symmetries, and for other general cases such a characteristic does not exist.

Quantum phase transitions of a generalized compass chain with staggered Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction

Qing-Qiu Wu, Weihai Ni, Wen‐Long You

We consider a class of one-dimensional compass models with staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interactions in an external transverse magnetic field. Based on the exact solution derived from Jordan-Wigner approach, we study the excitation gap, energy spectra, spin correlations and critical properties at phase transitions. We explore mutual effects of the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the magnetic field on the energy spectra and the ground-state phase diagram. Thermodynamic quantities including the entropy and the specific heat are discussed, and their universal scalings at low temperature are demonstrated.

Quantum phase transitions in a generalized compass chain with three-site interactions

Wen‐Long You, Yu-Cheng Qiu, Andrzej M. Oleś

We consider a class of one-dimensional compass models with an XYZ-YZX type of three-site exchange interaction in an external magnetic field. We present the exact solution derived by means of Jordan-Wigner transformation, and study the excitation gap, spin correlations, and establish the phase diagram. Besides the canted antiferromagnetic and polarized phases, the three-site interactions induce two distinct chiral phases, corresponding to gapless spinless-fermion systems having two or four Fermi points. We find that the $z$ component of the scalar chirality operator can act as an order parameter for these chiral phases. We also find that the thermodynamic quantities including the Wilson ratio can characterize the liquid phases. Finally, a nontrivial magnetoelectric effect is explored, and we show that the polarization can be manipulated by the magnetic field in the absence of electric field.

Phase diagram of spin-1 chains with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Hugo Tschirhart, Ernest Teng Siang Ong, Pinaki Sengupta +1 more

We investigate an antiferromagnetic spin-1 Heisenberg chain in the presence of Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) and an external magnetic field. We study the resulting spin chain using a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. Using DMRG simulations to determine the spectral gap and the entanglement spectrum, we map out the phase diagram as a function of magnetic field strength and DMI strength. We provide a qualitative interpretation for these numerical findings by mapping the spin-1 chain on a spin-$1/2$ ladder and using a bosonization approach.

Emergent phases in a compass chain with multisite interactions

Wen‐Long You, Chengjie Zhang, Weihai Ni +2 more

We study a dimerized spin chain with biaxial magnetic interacting ions in the presence of externally induced three-site interactions out of equilibrium. In the general case, the three-site interactions play a role in renormalizing the effective uniform magnetic field. We find that the existence of zero-energy Majorana modes is intricately related to the sign of Pfaffian of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes Hamiltonian and the relevant ${Z}_{2}$ topological invariant. In contrast, we show that an exotic spin-liquid phase can emerge in the compass limit through a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) quantum phase transition. Such a BKT transition is characterized by a large dynamic exponent $z=4$, and the spin-liquid phase is robust under a uniform magnetic field. We find the relative entropy and the quantum discord can signal the BKT transitions. We also uncover a few differences in deriving the correlation functions for the systems with broken reflection symmetry.

Exact treatment of magnetism-driven ferroelectricity in the one-dimensional compass model

Wen‐Long You, Guanghua Liu, Peter Horsch +1 more

We consider a class of one-dimensional compass models with antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction in an external magnetic field. Based on the exact solution derived by means of Jordan-Wigner transformation, we study the excitation gap, spin correlations, ground-state degeneracy, and critical properties at phase transitions. The phase diagram at finite electric and magnetic field consists of three phases: ferromagnetic, canted antiferromagnetic, and chiral. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction induces an electrical polarization in the ground state of the chiral phase, where the nonlocal string order and special features of entanglement spectra arise, while strong chiral correlations emerge at finite temperature in the other phases and are controlled by a gap between the nonchiral ground state and the chiral excitations. We further show that the magnetoelectric effects in all phases disappear above a typical temperature corresponding to the total bandwidth of the effective fermionic model. To this end we explore the entropy, specific heat, magnetization, electric polarization, and the magnetoelectric tensor at finite temperature. We identify rather peculiar specific-heat and polarization behavior of the compass model which follows from highly frustrated interactions.

Hydrodynamics of interacting spinons in the magnetized spin- 12 chain with a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Ren-Bo Wang, Anna Keselman, Oleg A. Starykh

We use a hydrodynamic approach to investigate dynamic spin susceptibility of the antiferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain with a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the presence of an external magnetic field. We find that transverse (with respect to the magnetic field) spin susceptibility harbors two (respectively, three) spin excitation modes when the magnetic field is parallel (respectively, orthogonal) to the DM axis. In all cases, the marginally irrelevant backscattering interaction between the spinons creates a finite energy splitting between optical branches of excitations at $k=0$. Additionally, for the orthogonal geometry, the two lower spin branches exhibit avoided crossing at finite momentum which is determined by the total magnetic field (the sum of the external and internal molecular fields) acting on spinons. Our approximate analytical calculations compare well with numerical results obtained using matrix-product-state (MPS) techniques. Physical consequences of our findings for the electron spin resonance experiments are discussed in detail.
