Abstract

Abstract By applying continuity and boundary conditions, the reflection and transmission coefficients of one-dimensional time-independent Schrödinger equation with a symmetric barrier-type shifted Deng–Fan potential are obtained and discussed. The numerical and graphical results are very sufficient, accurate and consistent with the conservation of probability.

Reflection and transmission coefficients from the superposition of various potentials

Petarpa Boonserm, Tritos Ngampitipan, Kunlapat Sansuk

Abstract The reflection and transmission coefficients describe the behavior of the matter wave incident on a potential barrier. They can be expressed in terms of the probability with which the matter wave can be reflected or transmitted. The central equation accounting for the behavior of the matter wave is the Schrödinger equation. The Schrödinger equation is the second order partial differential equation. However, in a stationary state, the Schrödinger equation is reduced to the time independent Schrödinger equation. This time independent Schrödinger equation is the second order linear ordinary differential equation. Since the time independent Schrödinger equation is linear, superposition of any of the two solutions to the time independent Schrödinger equation is also a solution. In this paper, we focus on the superposition of various potentials. The reflection and transmission coefficients from the superposition of various potentials are obtained. A comparison between the exact coefficients and those obtained by the 2 × 2 transfer matrix is made. The relationship between the transmission coefficient of the superposed potential and that of each individual potential is found. The results show that the transmission coefficient obtained from the 2 × 2 transfer matrix is of a lower bound on the exact transmission coefficient.

We consider the reflection-transmission of the Gaussian wave packet through the moving wall with absorbing boundary conditions based on the time dependent one-dimensional Schrödinger equation. The reflection coefficient is calculated for the case when the walls are fixed, and probability density is calculated for the case when the wall is moving linearly.

Variational R -matrix method for quantum tunneling problems

Hervé Le Rouzo

A variational R-matrix method for solving the one-dimensional time-independent Schrödinger equation is presented. The theory is simple and general and applies to an arbitrary potential. As an example, the method is applied to the pedagogically important problem of quantum tunneling through a barrier. Accurate transmission and reflection coefficients are obtained by the variational R-matrix method which compare favorably with the known analytical solutions.

Reflection of wave packets from a quantum well with a tunneling transmission resonance

A Gomez Edgar

The reflection of wave packets from a quantum well bounded by rectangular potential barriers, and which has a tunneling transmission resonance, is discussed. Numeric solutions to Schrödinger’s time-dependent equation show that the shape of the probability function ψψ* for a reflected wave packet can be quite different from that of the incident packet. Either a symmetric double hump or an asymmetric shape are possible for the reflected ψψ*, depending on the sharpness of the resonance. These shapes are explained analytically in terms of the reflection coefficient.

Exact Solutions for Compactly Supported Parabolic and Landau Quantum Barriers

Peter Collas, David Klein

We derive exact solutions to the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation for compact support parabolic and hyperbolic secant potential barriers, along with combinations of these types of potential barriers. We give the expressions for transmission and reflection coefficients and calculate some dwell times of interest.

Time-correlation function and average energy of molecules in presence of Deng-Fan potential in a moving boundary

Debraj Nath, Amlan K. Roy

Abstract For the Deng-Fan potential within a moving boundary condition, the time-dependent Schrödinger equation is considered analytically. The eigenvalue equation is solved by using a combination of Pekeris and Greene-Aldrich approximations. Various time-dependent quantities including density distribution function, auto-correlation function, disequilibrium, average energy, quantum similarity, quantum similarity index are obtained for selected eight diatomic molecules. The motion of the peak of soliton with moving boundary condition is investigated for ground states of some diatomic molecules along with the corresponding peak values.
