Mesoscopic fluctuations of the single-particle Green's function at Anderson transitions with Coulomb interaction

Abstract

Using the two-loop analysis and the background field method we demonstrate that the local pure scaling operators without derivatives in the Finkel'stein nonlinear sigma model can be constructed by straightforward generalization of the corresponding operators for the noninteracting case. These pure scaling operators demonstrate multifractal behavior and describe mesoscopic fluctuations of the single-particle Green's function. We determine anomalous dimensions of all such pure scaling operators in the interacting theory within the two-loop approximation.

Generalized multifractality in the spin quantum Hall symmetry class with interaction

Serafim S. Babkin, I. S. Burmistrov

Scaling of various local observables with a system size at Anderson transition criticality is characterized by a generalized multifractality. We study the generalized multifractality in the spin quantum Hall symmetry class (class C) in the presence of interaction. We employ the Finkel'stein nonlinear sigma model and construct the pure scaling derivativeless operators for class C in the presence of interaction. Within the two-loop renormalization group analysis we compute the anomalous dimensions of the pure scaling operators and demonstrate that they are affected by the interaction. We find that the interaction breaks exact symmetry relations between generalized multifractal exponents known for a noninteracting problem.

Boundary multifractality in the spin quantum Hall symmetry class with interaction

Serafim S. Babkin, I. S. Burmistrov

Generalized multifractality characterizes system size dependence of pure scaling local observables at Anderson transitions in all 10 symmetry classes of disordered systems. Recently, the concept of generalized multifractality has been extended to boundaries of critical disordered noninteracting systems. Here we study the generalized boundary multifractality in the presence of electron-electron interaction, focusing on the spin quantum Hall symmetry class (class C). Employing the two-loop renormalization group analysis within the Finkel'stein nonlinear sigma model, we compute the anomalous dimensions of the pure scaling operators located at the boundary of the system. We find that generalized boundary multifractal exponents are twice larger than their bulk counterparts. Exact symmetry relations between generalized boundary multifractal exponents in the case of noninteracting systems are explicitly broken by the interaction.

Mesoscopic fluctuations and multifractality at and across measurement-induced phase transitions

Igor Poboiko, Igor V. Gornyi, Alexander D. Mirlin

We explore statistical fluctuations over the ensemble of quantum trajectories in a model of two-dimensional free fermions subject to projective monitoring of local charge across the measurement-induced phase transition. Our observables are the particle-number covariance between spatially separated regions, G A B , and the two-point density correlation function, C ( r ) . Our results exhibit a remarkable analogy to Anderson localization, with G A B corresponding to two-terminal conductance and C ( r ) to two-point conductance, albeit with different replica limits and unconventional symmetry class, geometry, and boundary conditions. In the delocalized phase, G A B exhibits “universal,” nearly Gaussian, fluctuations with variance of order unity. In the localized phase, we find a broad distribution of G A B with − ln G A B ¯ ∼ L (where L is the system size) and the variance var ( ln G A B ) ∼ L μ , and similarly for C ( r ) , with μ ≈ 0.5 . At the transition point, the distribution function of G A B becomes scale invariant and C ( r ) exhibits multifractal statistics, C q ( r ) ¯ ∼ r − q ( d + 1 ) − Δ q . We characterize the spectrum of multifractal dimensions Δ q . Our findings lay the groundwork for mesoscopic theory of monitored systems, paving the way for various extensions.

Beta‐functions of non‐linear σ‐models for disordered and interacting electron systems

Luca Dell’Anna

We provide and study complete sets of one‐loop renormalization group equations of several Finkel'stein non‐linear σ models, the effective field theories describing the diffusive quantum fluctuations in correlated disordered systems. We consider different cases according to the presence of certain symmetries induced by the original random Hamiltonians, and we show that, for interacting systems, the Cartan's classification of symmetry classes is not enough to uniquely determine their scaling behaviors. image

Generalized surface multifractality in two-dimensional disordered systems

Serafim S. Babkin, Jonas F. Karcher, I. S. Burmistrov +1 more

Recently, a concept of generalized multifractality, which characterizes fluctuations and correlations of critical eigenstates, was introduced and explored for all 10 symmetry classes of disordered systems. Here, by using the nonlinear sigma-model ($\mathrm{NL}\ensuremath{\sigma}\mathrm{M}$) field theory, we extend the theory of generalized multifractality to boundaries of systems at criticality. Our numerical simulations on two-dimensional systems of symmetry classes A, C, and AII fully confirm the analytical predictions of pure-scaling observables and Weyl symmetry relations between critical exponents of surface generalized multifractality. This demonstrates the validity of the $\mathrm{NL}\ensuremath{\sigma}\mathrm{M}$ for the description of Anderson-localization critical phenomena, not only in the bulk but also on the boundary. The critical exponents strongly violate generalized parabolicity, in analogy with earlier results for the bulk, corroborating the conclusion that the considered Anderson-localization critical points are not described by conformal field theories. We further derive relations between generalized surface multifractal spectra and linear combinations of Lyapunov exponents of a strip in quasi-one-dimensional geometry, which hold under the assumption of invariance with respect to a logarithmic conformal map. Our numerics demonstrate that these relations hold with an excellent accuracy. Taken together, our results indicate an intriguing situation: the conformal invariance is broken but holds partially at critical points of Anderson localization.

Tunneling into the localized phase near Anderson transitions with Coulomb interaction

I. S. Burmistrov, I. V. Gornyi, A. D. Mirlin

We study the tunneling density of states (TDOS) of a disordered electronic system with Coulomb interaction on the insulating side of the Anderson localization transition. The average TDOS shows a critical behavior at high energies, with a crossover to a soft Coulomb gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ at low energies. We demonstrate that the single-particle excitations experience a localization transition (which belongs to the noninteracting universality class) at an energy $E=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{E}_{c}$. The mobility edge ${E}_{c}$ scales with the distance ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{c}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\mu}$ from the interacting critical point according to ${E}_{c}\ensuremath{\propto}{({\ensuremath{\mu}}_{c}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\mu})}^{\ensuremath{\nu}z}$, where $\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $z$ are the localization-length and the dynamical critical exponents. Local TDOS shows strong fluctuations and long-range correlations which reflect the multifractality associated with interacting and noninteracting fixed points as well the localization of low-energy excitations.
