On the correspondence between classical geometric phase of gyro-motion and quantum Berry phase

Abstract

We show that the geometric phase of the gyro-motion of a classical charged particle in a uniform time-dependent magnetic field described by Newton's equation can be derived from a coherent Berry phase for the coherent states of the Schrödinger equation or the Dirac equation. This correspondence is established by constructing coherent states for a particle using the energy eigenstates on the Landau levels and proving that the coherent states can maintain their status of coherent states during the slow varying of the magnetic field. It is discovered that the orbital Berry phases of the eigenstates interfere coherently to produce an observable effect (which we termed “coherent Berry phase”), which is exactly the geometric phase of the classical gyro-motion. This technique works for the particles with and without spin. For particles with spin, on each of the eigenstates that make up the coherent states, the Berry phase consists of two parts that can be identified as those due to the orbital and the spin motion. It is the orbital Berry phases that interfere coherently to produce a coherent Berry phase corresponding to the classical geometric phase of the gyro-motion. The spin Berry phases of the eigenstates, on the other hand, remain to be quantum phase factors for the coherent states and have no classical counterpart.

Classical geometric phase of gyro-motion is a coherent quantum Berry phase

Hongxuan Zhu, Hong Qin

We show that the geometric phase of the gyro-motion of a classical charged particle in a uniform time-dependent magnetic field described by Newton's equation is a coherent quantum Berry phase for the coherent states of the Schr\odinger equation or the Dirac equation. This equivalence is established by constructing coherent states for a particle using the energy eigenstates on the Landau levels and proving that the coherent states can maintain their status of coherent states during the slow varying of the magnetic field. It is discovered that orbital Berry phases of the eigenstates interfere coherently such that a coherent Berry phase for the coherent states can be naturally defined, which is exactly the geometric phase of the classical gyro-motion. This technique works for particles with and without spin. For particles with spin, on each of the eigenstates that makes up the coherent states, the Berry phase consists of two parts that can be identified as those due to the orbital and the spin motion. It is the orbital Berry phases that interfere coherently to produce a coherent Berry phase corresponding to the classical geometric phase of the gyro-motion. The spin Berry phases of the eigenstates, on the other hand, only result in an incoherent Berry phase for the coherent states, which remains to be a quantum phase factor for the coherent states and has no classical counterpart.

The coherent states of the two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator and the classical limit of the Landau theory of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field

Wangyao Li, Kunnat J. Sebastian

Abstract In this paper we show how the classical result of a charged particle moving in a circle in the xy plane, when a uniform magnetic field is directed along the z -axis, can be derived from the Landau quantum theory using the coherent states of the two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator in the xy plane. The coherent states in this case are the simultaneous eigen vectors of the annihilation operators a + and a − . We prove that the time-dependent coordinate space wave packets representing the time-dependent coherent states move in a circle with the cyclotron frequency ω c = ∣ q ∣ B m and with a radius given by the classical expression, but given in terms of the quantum mechanical expectation values. The expectation value of the energy of the particle and of the square of the radius of its circular are proportional to the square of the magnitude of the eigen value of a + in the coherent state, where as the x and y coordinates of the centre of the circle are proportional to the real and the imaginary parts of the eigen value of a − . The phase of the circular motion is the same as the phase of the complex eigen value of a + . So for a given energy of the particle or for a given radius of the circular orbit, there are an infinite number of circles which differ from each other by the x and y coordinates of the centre as well as the phase of the circular motion. The infinite degeneracy of the Landau levels is due to the invariance of the energy eigen values under spatial translations in the xy plane and rotations about the z -axis. We also show that as the magnitude of the eigen value of a + becomes much larger than one, the relative uncertainty or fluctuation in the energy and in the radius of the circular orbit becomes negligibly small as we expect for a classical state.

Berry phase in homogeneous Kähler manifolds with linear Hamiltonians

Luis J. Boya, A. M. Perelomov, Mariano Sant

We study the total (dynamical plus geometrical (Berry)) phase of cyclic quantum motion for coherent states over homogeneous Kähler manifolds X = G/H, which can be considered as the phase spaces of classical systems and which are, in particular cases, coadjoint orbits of some Lie groups G. When the Hamiltonian is linear in the generators of a Lie group, both phases can be calculated exactly in terms of classical objects. In particular, the geometric phase is given by the symplectic area enclosed by the (purely classical) motion in the space of coherent states. I.

Phase space approach to quantum dynamics

P. Lebœuf

Replaces the Schrodinger equation for the time propagation of states of a quantized 2D spherical phase space by the dynamics of a system of N particles lying in phase space. This is done through factorization formulae of an analytic function theory arising in a coherent-state representation, the 'particles' being the zeroes of the quantum state. For linear Hamiltonians, like a spin in a uniform magnetic field, the motion of the particles is classical. However, nonlinear terms induce interactions between the particles. Their time propagation is studied and it is shown that, contrary to integrable systems, for chaotic maps they tend to fill, as their classical counterpart, the whole phase space in a uniform way.

Simulating two-level quantum systems via classical orbit motion: Adiabatic cyclic evolution and Berry phase

Shao-Wu Yao, Bo You, Li-Xiang Cen

We propose a method to simulate adiabatically driven two-level quantum systems and detect the Berry phase induced in the cyclic evolution by observing the classical orbit motion of a charged particle under a time-varying magnetic field. Analogy between the dynamics of these two species of systems is revealed and the correspondence relationship is established by virtue of their equations of motion, i.e., the von Neumman equation of the quantum binary system and the Newton-Lorentz equation of the charged particle. In particular, we show how the complex phase information of the quantum system, say, the Berry phase shift acquired by its wave function during the loop evolution, can be visually captured by examining the spatial motion of the classical particle.
