Majorana fermions in the nonuniform Ising-Kitaev chain: exact solution

Abstract

A quantum computer based on Majorana qubits would contain a large number of zero-energy Majorana states. This system can be modelled as a connected network of the Ising-Kitaev chains alternating the "trivial" and "topological" regions, with the zero-energy Majorana fermions localized at their interfaces. The low-energy sector of the theory describing such a network can be formulated in terms of leading-order couplings between the Majorana zero modes. I consider a minimal model exhibiting effective couplings between four Majorana zero modes - the nonuniform Ising-Kitaev chain, containing two "topological" regions separated by a "trivial" region. Solving the model exactly, I show that for generic values of the model parameters the four zero modes are localized at the four interface points of the chain. In the special case where additional inversion symmetry is present, the Majorana zero modes are "delocalized" between two interface points. In both cases, the low-energy sector of the theory can be formulated in terms of the localized Majorana fermions, but the couplings between some of them are independent of their respective separations: the exact solution does not support the "nearest-neighbor" form of the effective low-energy Hamiltonian.

Distribution of Majorana modes in the extended-range Kitaev chain

Pedro Barbisan Widniczck, Gerardo Martinez

The topological properties of the Kitaev chain model with extended-range interactions are investigated, focusing on cases where the topological winding number is preserved. We assume that the pairing and hopping terms decay algebraically in space with exponents $α$ and $β$, respectively. We show that in the truncated-range scenario, there are as many distinct topological phases as the number of coupled neighboring sites. In addition, an explicit analytical formulation is provided to evaluate the topological invariant and the phase transitions that emerge in these systems. Besides the analytical description, we introduce a new physical insight into the topological excitations of the ground-state by measuring the spatial distribution of the edge modes with the Majorana average position. Taking the next-nearest neighbor Kitaev chains as a probe, various numerical calculations of Majorana edge states were performed in finite-size clusters to determine the sensitivity of the topological zero energy modes to the parameters of interest. The occupation of edge-to-edge non-local fermion states is computed and defined as an effective parity. Such an effective parity exhibits new interesting features beyond the energetic exchange from the ground-state fermion parity switches, which are related to the distribution of the respective edge modes. Our calculations show a direct correlation between the ground-state fermion parity and the edge occupation numbers, which are translated into localization and delocalization of the Majorana average position.

Majorana zero modes, spontaneous $Z_2^{f}$ symmetry breaking, and long range edge correlation in Kitaev chains: analytic solutions and density-matrix-renormalization-group study

Jian-Jian Miao, Hui-Ke Jin, Fu‐Chun Zhang +1 more

We study Kitaev model in one-dimension with open boundary condition by using exact analytic methods for non-interacting system in the half filled limit as well as in the symmetric case of $\Delta=t$, and by using density-matrix-renormalization-group method for interacting system with nearest neighbor repulsion. We show explicitly that the emergence of Majorana zero mode is associated with the spontaneous symmetry broken of fermion number parity operator $Z_2^f$, which is $+1$ for even number of fermions and $-1$ for odd number of fermions. Our results are in support of recent proposal by Klassen and Wen\cite{Klassen}, who proposed such spontaneous symmetry broken in systems with Majorana zero modes. We suggest and examine an edge correlation function of Majorana fermions to characterize the long range order in the topological superconducting states and study the phase diagram of the interating Kitaev chain.

Explicit forms of zero modes in symmetric interacting Kitaev chain without and with dimerization

Yiming Wang, Zhidan Li, Qiang Han

The fermionic and bosonic zero modes of the one-dimensional (1D) interacting Kitaev chain at the symmetric point are unveiled. The many-body structures of the Majorana zero modes in the topological region are given explicitly by carrying out a perturbation expansion up to infinite order. We also give the analytic expressions of the bosonic zero modes in the topologically trivial phase. Our results are generalized to the hybrid fermion system comprised of the interacting Kitaev model and the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model, in which we show that these two types of zero modes can coexist in a certain region of its phase diagram.

Extended Kitaev chain with longer-range hopping and pairing

Antonio Alecce, Luca Dell’Anna

We consider the Kitaev chain model with finite and infinite range in the hopping and pairing parameters, looking in particular at the appearance of Majorana zero-energy modes and massive edge modes. We study the system both in the presence and in the absence of time-reversal symmetry, by means of topological invariants and exact diagonalization, disclosing very rich phase diagrams. In particular, for extended hopping and pairing terms, we can get as many Majorana modes at each end of the chain as the neighbors involved in the couplings. Finally, we generalize the transfer matrix approach useful to calculate the zero-energy Majorana states at the edges for a generic number of coupled neighbors.

Exact ground states and topological order in interacting Kitaev/Majorana chains

Hosho Katsura, Dirk Schuricht, Masahiro O. Takahashi

We study a system of interacting spinless fermions in one dimension that, in the absence of interactions, reduces to the Kitaev chain [Kitaev, Phys. Usp. 44, 131 (2001)]. In the noninteracting case, a signal of topological order appears as zero-energy modes localized near the edges. We show that the exact ground states can be obtained analytically even in the presence of nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions when the on-site (chemical) potential is tuned to a particular function of the other parameters. As with the noninteracting case, the obtained ground states are twofold degenerate and differ in fermionic parity. We prove the uniqueness of the obtained ground states and show that they can be continuously deformed to the ground states of the noninteracting Kitaev chain without gap closing. We also demonstrate explicitly that there exists a set of operators each of which maps one of the ground states to the other with opposite fermionic parity. These operators can be thought of as an interacting generalization of Majorana edge zero modes.
