Abstract

We investigate two coupled nonlinear cavities that are coherently driven in a dissipative environment. We perform semiclassical, numerical, and analytical quantum studies of this dimer model when both cavities are symmetrically driven. In the semiclassical analysis, we find steady-state solutions with different photon occupations in two cavities. Such states can be considered analogs of the closed system double-well symmetry-breaking states. We analyze the occurrence and properties of these localized states in the system parameter space and examine how the symmetry-breaking states, in the form of a bistable pair, are associated with the single-cavity bistable behavior. In a full quantum calculation of the master equation dynamics that includes quantum fluctuations, the symmetry-breaking states and bistability disappear due to the quantum fluctuations. In the quantum trajectory picture, we observe enhanced quantum jumps and switching, which indicate the presence of the underlying semiclassical symmetry-breaking states. Finally, we present a set of analytical solutions for the steady-state correlation functions by using the complex $P$ representation and discuss its regime of validity.

Bifurcation analysis of nonlinear coupled photonic nanocavities

Recently, various research groups have studied spontaneous symmetry breaking and bistable behaviour in both active and passively driven coupled photonic nanocavities[1]. This work is of interest both in itself and because it naturally extends to coupled nonlinear quantum systems described by the Bose-Hubbard model [2]. Here we present a theoretical study of the dynamics in such a system by considering the bifurcation behaviour as the different parameters are varied. In normalised units the model can be written as: dA/dt = i(δ τ + |A|2)A-A+(iκ + γ)τB+f (1) dB/dt = i(δ τ + |B|2)B-B+(iκ + γ)τA+f (2) where A and B are the slowly varying normalised amplitudes of the fields in each nano-cavity. Further, δ is the detuning from the cavity resonance, τ is the photon lifetime, κ and γ describe the linear coupling between the cavities (if γ = 0 and κ < 0 the model is identical to the Bose-Hubbard model [2] in the semiclassical regime), while f represents a coherent driving term. In deriving the above equations it is assumed that the cavities are identical, and so a focus is the switching between the symmetrical state [A(t) = B(t)] and asymmetrical states, which must come in pairs. Fig. 1(a) shows a typical boundary curve dividing the (δ, f) plane into the regions where the symmetric and asymmetric solutions exist. Further analysis shows that more complicated dynamics arise from the asymmetric state. Fig. 1(b) shows the field intensity for the symmetric and asymmetric steady-states as a function of f, where stable solutions are represented by solid and unstable ones by dashed curves. Hopf bifurcations, marked by H, cause the asymmetric solution to change stability. A typical bifurcating periodic solution is shown in Fig. 1(c) for f = 6.

Spin squeezing, entanglement, and coherence in two driven, dissipative, nonlinear cavities coupled with single- and two-photon exchange

Ali Ü. C. Hardal, Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu

We investigate spin squeezing, quantum entanglement, and second-order coherence in two coupled, driven, dissipative, nonlinear cavities. We compare these quantum statistical properties for the cavities coupled with either single- or two-photon exchange. Solving the quantum optical master equation of the system numerically in the steady state, we calculate the zero-time delay second-order correlation function for the coherent, genuine two-mode entanglement parameters, an optimal spin squeezing inequality associated with particle entanglement, concurrence, quantum entropy, and logarithmic negativity. We identify regimes of distinct quantum statistical character depending on the relative strength of photon exchange and nonlinearity. Moreover, we examine the effects of weak and strong drives on these quantum statistical regimes.

Dissipative phase transitions and chaos in two-photon driven quantum optomechanics

Giovanni Bragadin, Filippo Ferrari, Lorenzo Fioroni +4 more

We investigate nonequilibrium criticality and chaos in a two-photon-driven optomechanical system. The parametric drive preserves a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of the optical field, while radiation-pressure coupling transfers the resulting nonlinear dynamics to a mechanical oscillator. Combining semiclassical stability analysis, exact Liouvillian spectra, and stochastic quantum trajectories, we show that this driven-dissipative optomechanical model supports both first- and second-order dissipative phase transitions. At negative detuning a second-order transition yields spontaneous breaking of the cavity-parity symmetry in the thermodynamic limit. At positive detuning the same symmetry breaking coexists with a first-order transition, signaled by metastability and by an additional symmetric Liouvillian mode. At stronger pump power the mean-field dynamics loses all stable fixed points and develops limit cycles and chaotic attractors with positive Lyapunov exponent. Quantum trajectories in this regime display chaotic-like motion, enhanced steady-state entropy, and delocalization over many entropic Liouvillian modes. These results establish two-photon-driven optomechanics as a platform where dissipative criticality, symmetry breaking, and quantum signatures of chaos emerge within the same experimentally accessible setting.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in a Coherently Driven Nanophotonic Bose-Hubbard Dimer

Bruno Garbin, Andrus Giraldo, K. J. H. Peters +7 more

We report on the first experimental observation of spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking (SSB) in coherently driven-dissipative coupled optical cavities. SSB is observed as the breaking of the spatial or mirror Z_{2} symmetry between two symmetrically pumped and evanescently coupled photonic crystal nanocavities, and manifests itself as random intensity localization in one of the two cavities. We show that, in a system featuring repulsive boson interactions (U>0), the observation of a pure pitchfork bifurcation requires negative photon hopping energies (J<0), which we have realized in our photonic crystal molecule. SSB is observed over a wide range of the two-dimensional parameter space of driving intensity and detuning, where we also find a region that exhibits bistable symmetric behavior. Our results pave the way for the experimental study of limit cycles and deterministic chaos arising from SSB, as well as the study of nonclassical photon correlations close to SSB transitions.

Bose-Hubbard model: Relation between driven-dissipative steady states and equilibrium quantum phases

Alexandre Le Boité, Giuliano Orso, Cristiano Ciuti

We present analytical solutions for the mean-field master equation of the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model for cavity photons, in the limit of both weak pumping and weak dissipation. Instead of pure Mott-insulator states, we find statistical mixtures with the same second-order coherence ${g}^{(2)}(0)$ as a Fock state with $n$ photons, but a mean photon number of $n/2.$ These mixed states occur when $n$ pump photons have the same energy as $n$ interacting photons inside the nonlinear cavity and survive up to a critical tunneling coupling strength, above which a crossover to a classical coherent state takes place. We also explain the origin of both antibunching and superbunching predicted by P-representation mean-field theory at higher pumping and dissipation. In particular, we show that the strongly correlated region of the associated phase diagram cannot be described within the semiclassical Gross-Pitaevskii approach.

Quantum entanglement in the spatial-symmetry-breaking phase transition of a driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard dimer

Wim Casteels, Cristiano Ciuti

We theoretically explore the quantum correlation properties of a dissipative Bose-Hubbard dimer in the presence of a coherent drive. In particular, we focus on the regime where the semiclassical theory predicts a bifurcation with a spontaneous spatial symmetry breaking. The critical behavior in a well-defined thermodynamical limit of large excitation numbers is considered and analyzed within a Gaussian approach. The case of a finite boson density is also examined by numerically integrating the Lindblad master equation for the density matrix. We predict the critical behavior around the bifurcation points accompanied by large quantum correlations of the mixed steady state, in particular, exhibiting a peak in the logarithmic entanglement negativity.
