Abstract

We present a joint experimental and theoretical investigation of the lifetime of weakly bound dimers formed near narrow interspecies Feshbach resonances in mass-imbalanced Fermi-Fermi systems, considering the specific example of a mixture of $^{6}\text{Li}$ and $^{40}\text{K}$ atoms. Our work addresses the central question of the increase in the stability of the dimers resulting from Pauli suppression of collisional losses, which is a well-known effect in mass-balanced fermionic systems near broad resonances. We present measurements of the spontaneous dissociation of dimers in dilute samples, and of the collisional losses in dense samples arising from both dimer-dimer processes and from atom-dimer processes. We find that all loss processes are suppressed close to the Feshbach resonance. Our general theoretical approach for fermionic mixtures near narrow Feshbach resonances provides predictions for the suppression of collisional decay as a function of the detuning from resonance, and we find excellent agreement with the experimental benchmarks provided by our $^{6}\text{Li}\ensuremath{-}^{40}\text{K}$ system. We finally present model calculations for other Feshbach-resonant Fermi-Fermi systems, which are of interest for experiments in the near future.

Optically trapped Feshbach molecules of fermionic Dy 161 and K 40 : Role of light-induced and collisional losses

Alberto Canali, Chun-Kit Wong, Luc Absil +4 more

We study the decay of a dense, ultracold sample of weakly bound DyK dimers stored in an optical dipole trap. Our bosonic dimers are composed of the fermionic isotopes Dy 161 and K 40 , which is of particular interest for experiments related to pairing and superfluidity in fermionic systems with mass imbalance. We have realized dipole traps with near-infrared laser light in four different wavelength regions between 1050 and 2002 nm . We have identified trap-light-induced processes as the overall dominant source of losses, except for wavelengths around 2000 nm , where light-induced losses appeared to be much weaker. In a trap near 1550 nm , we found a plateau of minimal light-induced losses, and by carefully tuning the wavelength we reached conditions where losses from inelastic collisions between the trapped dimers became observable. For very weakly bound dimers close to the center of a magnetically tuned Feshbach resonance, we demonstrate the Pauli suppression of collisional losses by about an order of magnitude.

Broad Feshbach Resonance in the Li6−K40 Mixture

T. G. Tiecke, M. R. Goosen, A. Ludewig +4 more

We study the widths of interspecies Feshbach resonances in a mixture of the fermionic quantum gases 6Li and 40K. We develop a model to calculate the width and position of all available Feshbach resonances for a system. Using the model, we select the optimal resonance to study the {6}Li/{40}K mixture. Experimentally, we obtain the asymmetric Fano line shape of the interspecies elastic cross section by measuring the distillation rate of 6Li atoms from a potassium-rich 6Li/{40}K mixture as a function of magnetic field. This provides us with the first experimental determination of the width of a resonance in this mixture, DeltaB=1.5(5) G. Our results offer good perspectives for the observation of universal crossover physics using this mass-imbalanced fermionic mixture.

Atom-dimer p-wave resonance for fermionic mixtures with different masses

R. Combescot, X. Leyronas

We show that, near a Feshbach resonance, a strong p-wave resonance is present at low energy in atom-dimer scattering for $^6$Li-$^{40}$K fermionic mixtures. This resonance is due to a virtual bound state, in the atom-dimer system, which is present at this low energy. When the mass ratio between the two fermionic elements is increased, this virtual bound state goes to a known real bound state which appears when the mass ratio reaches 8.17. This resonance should affect a number of physical properties. These include the equation of state of unbalanced mixtures at very low temperature but also the equation of state of balanced mixtures at moderate or high temperature. The frequency and the damping of collective modes should also provide a convenient way to evidence this resonance. Finally it should be possible to modify the effective mass of one the fermionic species by making use of an optical lattice. This would allow to study the strong dependence of the resonance as a function of the mass ratio of the two fermionic elements.

Anomalous dimers in quantum mixtures near broad resonances: Pauli blocking, Fermi surface dynamics, and implications

Jun-Liang Song, Fei Zhou

We study the energetics and dispersion of anomalous dimers that are induced by the Pauli blocking effect in a quantum Fermi gas of majority atoms near interspecies resonances. Unlike in vacuum, we find that both the sign and magnitude of the dimer masses are tunable via Feshbach resonances. We also investigate the effects of particle-hole fluctuations on the dispersion of dimers and demonstrate that the particle-hole fluctuations near a Fermi surface (with Fermi momentum $\ensuremath{\hbar}{k}_{F}$) generally reduce the effective two-body interactions and the binding energy of dimers. Furthermore, in the limit of light minority atoms the particle-hole fluctuations disfavor the formation of dimers with a total momentum $\ensuremath{\hbar}{k}_{F}$, because near $\ensuremath{\hbar}{k}_{F}$ the modes where the dominating particle-hole fluctuations appear are the softest. Our calculation suggests that near broad interspecies resonances when the minority-majority mass ratio ${m}_{B}/{m}_{F}$ is smaller than a critical value (estimated to be $0.136$), dimers in a finite-momentum channel are energetically favored over dimers in the zero-momentum channel. We apply our theory to quantum gases of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$$^{40}\mathrm{K}$, $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$$^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$, $^{40}\mathrm{K}$$^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$, and $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$$^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ near broad interspecies resonances, and discuss the limitations of our calculations and implications.

Observation of a Strong Atom-Dimer Attraction in a Mass-Imbalanced Fermi-Fermi Mixture

Michael Jag, Matteo Zaccanti, Marko Cetina +5 more

We investigate a mixture of ultracold fermionic K40 atoms and weakly bound Li6K40 dimers on the repulsive side of a heteronuclear atomic Feshbach resonance. By radio-frequency spectroscopy we demonstrate that the normally repulsive atom-dimer interaction is turned into a strong attraction. The phenomenon can be understood as a three-body effect in which two heavy K40 fermions exchange the light Li6 atom, leading to attraction in odd partial-wave channels (mainly p wave). Our observations show that mass imbalance in a fermionic system can profoundly change the character of interactions as compared to the well-established mass-balanced case.

Resonantly Interacting Fermi-Fermi Mixture of Dy161 and K40

Cornelis Ravensbergen, Elisa Soave, Vincent Le Corre +4 more

We report on the realization of a Fermi-Fermi mixture of ultracold atoms that combines mass imbalance, tunability, and collisional stability. In an optically trapped sample of ^{161}Dy and ^{40}K, we identify a broad Feshbach resonance centered at a magnetic field of 217 G. Hydrodynamic expansion profiles in the resonant interaction regime reveal a bimodal behavior resulting from mass imbalance. Lifetime studies on resonance show a suppression of inelastic few-body processes by orders of magnitude, which we interpret as a consequence of the fermionic nature of our system. The resonant mixture opens up intriguing perspectives for studies on novel states of strongly correlated fermions with mass imbalance.
