Abstract

We study bipartite post measurement entanglement entropy after selective measurements in quantum chains. We first study the quantity for the critical systems that can be described by conformal field theories. We find a connection between post measurement entanglement entropy and the Casimir energy of floating objects. Then we provide formulas for the post measurement entanglement entropy for open and finite temperature systems. We also comment on the Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy in the context of the post measurement entanglement entropy. Finally, we also provide some formulas regarding modular hamiltonians and entanglement spectrum in the after measurement systems. After through discussion regarding CFT systems we also provide some predictions regarding massive field theories. We then discuss a generic method to calculate the post measurement entanglement entropy in the free fermion systems. Using the method we study the post measurement entanglement entropy in the XY spin chain. We check numerically the CFT and the massive field theory results in the transverse field Ising chain and the XX model. In particular, we study the post meaurement entanglement entropy in the infinite, periodic and open critical transverse field Ising chain and the critical XX model. The effect of the temperature and the gap is also discussed in these models.

Post-measurement bipartite entanglement entropy in conformal field theories

M. A. Rajabpour

We derive exact formulas for bipartite von Neumann entanglement entropy after partial projective local measurement in $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal field theories with periodic and open boundary conditions. After defining the setup we will check numerically the validity of our results in the case of Klein-Gordon field theory (coupled harmonic oscillators) and spin-$1/2 XX$ chain in a magnetic field. The agreement between analytical results and the numerical calculations is very good. We also find a lower bound for localizable entanglement in coupled harmonic oscillators.

Entanglement evolution after connecting finite to infinite quantum chains

Viktor Eisler, Dragi Karevski, Thierry Platini +1 more

We study zero-temperature XX chains and transverse Ising chains and join an initially separate finite piece on one or on both sides to an infinite remainder. In both critical and non-critical systems we find a typical increase of the entanglement entropy after the quench, followed by a slow decay towards the value of the homogeneous chain. In the critical case, the predictions of conformal field theory are verified for the first phase of the evolution, while at late times a step structure can be observed.

Entanglement entropy after a partial projective measurement in 1 + 1 dimensional conformal field theories: exact results

M. A. Rajabpour

Abstract We calculate analytically the Rényi bipartite entanglement entropy S α of the ground state of 1 + 1 dimensional conformal field theories (CFT) after performing a projective measurement in part of the system. We show that the entanglement entropy in this setup is dependent on the central charge and the operator content of the system. When the measurement region A separates the two parts B and B ¯ , the entanglement entropy between B and B ¯ decreases like a power-law with respect to the characteristic distance between the two regions with an exponent which is dependent on the rank α of the Rényi entanglement entropy and the smallest scaling dimension present in the system. We check our findings by making numerical calculations on the Klein–Gordon field theory (coupled harmonic oscillators) after fixing the position (partial measurement) of some of the oscillators. We also comment on the post-measurement entanglement entropy in the massive quantum field theories.

Entanglement entropy and quantum field theory

Pasquale Calabrese, John Cardy

We carry out a systematic study of entanglement entropy in relativistic quantum field theory. This is defined as the von Neumann entropy S A = −Tr ρ A logρ A corresponding to the reduced density matrix ρ A of a subsystem A . For the case of a 1+1-dimensional critical system, whose continuum limit is a conformal field theory with central charge c , we re-derive the result of Holzhey et al when A is a finite interval of length in an infinite system, and extend it to many other cases: finite systems, finite temperatures, and when A consists of an arbitrary number of disjoint intervals. For such a system away from its critical point, when the correlation length ξ is large but finite, we show that , where is the number of boundary points of A . These results are verified for a free massive field theory, which is also used to confirm a scaling ansatz for the case of finite size off-critical systems, and for integrable lattice models, such as the Ising and XXZ models, which are solvable by corner transfer matrix methods. Finally the free field results are extended to higher dimensions, and used to motivate a scaling form for the singular part of the entanglement entropy near a quantum phase transition.

Entanglement and boundary entropy in quantum spin chains with arbitrary direction of the boundary magnetic fields

J. C. Xavier, M. A. Rajabpour

We calculate the entanglement and the universal boundary entropy (BE) in critical quantum spin chains, such as the transverse field Ising chain and the XXZ chain, with arbitrary direction of the boundary magnetic field (ADBMF). We determine the boundary universality class that an ADBMF induces. In particular, we show that the induced boundary conformal field theory depends on the point on the Bloch sphere where the boundary magnetic field directs. We show that the classification of the directions boils down to the simple fact that the boundary field breaks the bulk symmetry or does not. We present a procedure to estimate the universal BE, based on the finite-size corrections of the entanglement entropy, which apply to ADBMF. To calculate the universal BE in the XXZ chain, we use the density matrix renormalization group. The transverse field XY chain with ADBMF after Jordan-Wigner transformation is not a quadratic free fermion Hamiltonian. We map this model to a quadratic free fermion chain by introducing two extra ancillary spins coupled to the main chain at the boundaries, which makes the problem integrable. The eigenstates of the transverse field XY chain can be obtained by proper projection in the enlarged chain. Using this mapping, we are able to calculate the entanglement entropy of the transverse field XY chain using the usual correlation matrix technique up to relatively large sizes.

Structure of Measurement-Induced Entanglement in Infinite-Randomness Critical States

Oliver Breach

The impact of projective measurements on a many-body quantum state is tightly linked to its underlying entanglement structure. Critical states are particularly sensitive, as long-range entanglement allows local measurements to have global consequences. This has been extensively studied in the context of critical states described by a conformal field theory (CFT), where measurements can alter critical properties in post-measurement quantities ('measurement-altered criticality') and induce long-range entanglement with universal features ('measurement-induced entanglement'). By contrast, little is known about the role of measurements on critical states with quenched disorder, which admit no CFT description. Here, we develop a theory of measurements on one-dimensional critical states governed by infinite-randomness fixed points (IRFPs), focusing on two closely related examples: the random XXZ chain and the random transverse-field Ising model. We show that the measurement-induced entanglement decays as a power-law with universal exponent $(3-\sqrt{5})/2$ in both models, and that the minimum number of measurements required to establish this entanglement obeys a universal scaling form. When only a finite density of measurements is made, we show that the critical properties of the state are remarkably robust: `measurement-altered criticality' is absent, with measurements either preserving the critical exponents, or destroying the criticality entirely. These results establish IRFPs as an analytically tractable arena for measurements on critical states, complementary to the CFT case. The outcome randomness that necessitates replica methods in clean systems becomes trivial at infinite randomness, with the universal response governed by the statistics induced by the quenched disorder.
