A cardy formula for three-point coefficients or how the black hole got its spots

Abstract

Modular covariance of torus one-point functions constrains the three point function coefficients of a two dimensional CFT. This leads to an asymptotic formula for the average value of light-heavy-heavy three point coefficients, generalizing Cardy’s formula for the high energy density of states. The derivation uses certain asymptotic properties of one-point conformal blocks on the torus. Our asymptotic formula matches a dual AdS3 computation of one point functions in a black hole background. This is evidence that the BTZ black hole geometry emerges upon course-graining over a suitable family of heavy microstates.

Universal dynamics of heavy operators in CFT2

Abstract We obtain an asymptotic formula for the average value of the operator product expansion coefficients of any unitary, compact two dimensional CFT with c > 1. This formula is valid when one or more of the operators has large dimension or — in the presence of a twist gap — has large spin. Our formula is universal in the sense that it depends only on the central charge and not on any other details of the theory. This result unifies all previous asymptotic formulas for CFT2 structure constants, including those derived from crossing symmetry of four point functions, modular covariance of torus correlation functions, and higher genus modular invariance. We determine this formula at finite central charge by deriving crossing kernels for higher genus crossing equations, which give analytic control over the structure constants even in the absence of exact knowledge of the conformal blocks. The higher genus modular kernels are obtained by sewing together the elementary kernels for four-point crossing and modular transforms of torus one-point functions. Our asymptotic formula is related to the DOZZ formula for the structure constants of Liouville theory, and makes precise the sense in which Liouville theory governs the universal dynamics of heavy operators in any CFT. The large central charge limit provides a link with 3D gravity, where the averaging over heavy states corresponds to a coarse-graining over black hole microstates in holographic theories. Our formula also provides an improved understanding of the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) in CFT2, and suggests that ETH can be generalized to other kinematic regimes in two dimensional CFTs.

Universal asymptotics of three-point coefficients from elliptic representation of Virasoro blocks

Diptarka Das, Shouvik Datta, Sridip Pal

In ($1+1$)-$d$ CFTs, the 4-point function on the plane can be mapped to the pillow geometry and thereby crossing symmetry gets translated into a modular property. This feature arises from the Virasoro blocks in the elliptic representation. We use these modular features to derive a universal asymptotic formula for OPE coefficients in which one of the operators is averaged over heavy primaries. As an application, we demonstrate that the coarse-grained heavy channel then reproduces features of the holographic $2\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2$ $\mathcal{S}$-matrix which has black holes as their intermediate states.

A new handle on three-point coefficients: OPE asymptotics from genus two modular invariance

John Cardy, Alexander Maloney, Henry Maxfield

We derive an asymptotic formula for operator product expansion coefficients of heavy operators in two dimensional conformal field theory. This follows from modular invariance of the genus two partition function, and generalises the asymptotic formula for the density of states from torus modular invariance. The resulting formula is universal, depending only on the central charge, but involves the asymptotic behaviour of genus two conformal blocks. We use monodromy techniques to compute the asymptotics of the relevant blocks at large central charge to determine the behaviour explicitly.

Universal dynamics in non-orientable CFT2

Ioannis Tsiares

A bstract Two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) defined on non-orientable Riemann surfaces obey consistency Cardy conditions analogous to those in the orientable case. We revisit those conditions for irrational theories with central charge c > 1 in the context of two-point functions of primaries on the Real Projective plane $$ {\mathbbm{RP}}^2 $$ RP 2 and the partition function on the Klein bottle $$ {\mathbbm{K}}^2 $$ K 2 . Using the irrational versions of the Virasoro fusion and modular kernels we derive universal expressions for the non-orientable CFT data at large conformal dimension, assuming a gap in the spectrum of scalar primaries. In particular, we derive asymptotic formulas at finite central charge for the averaged Light-Light-Heavy product C LLH × Γ H of OPE coefficients with the $$ {\mathbbm{RP}}^2 $$ RP 2 one-point function normalizations, as well as for the parity-weighted density of heavy scalar primaries (or equivalently the density of heavy $$ {\Gamma}_H^2 $$ Γ H 2 ). We discuss the gravitational interpretation of the results.

Universality in asymptotic bounds and its saturation in 2D CFT

Diptarka Das, Yuya Kusuki, Sridip Pal

Abstract We study asymptotics of three point coefficients (light-light-heavy) and two point correlators in heavy states in unitary, compact 2D CFTs. We prove an upper and lower bound on such quantities using numerically assisted Tauberian techniques. We obtain an optimal upper bound on the spectrum of operators appearing with fixed spin from the OPE of two identical scalars. While all the CFTs obey this bound, rational CFTs come close to saturating it. This mimics the scenario of bounds on asymptotic density of states and thereby pronounces an universal feature in asymptotics of 2D CFTs. Next, we clarify the role of smearing in interpreting the asymptotic results pertaining to considerations of eigenstate thermalization in 2D CFTs. In the context of light-light-heavy three point coefficients, we find that the order one number in the bound is sensitive to how close the light operators are from the $$ \frac{c}{32} $$ c 32 threshold. In context of two point correlator in heavy state, we find the presence of an enigmatic regime which separates the AdS3 thermal physics and the BTZ black hole physics. Furthermore, we present some new numerical results on the behaviour of spherical conformal block.
