Gravitational dual of the Rényi displacement operator

Abstract

We give a recipe for computing correlation functions of the displacement operator localized on a spherical or planar higher dimensional twist defect using $\mathrm{AdS}/\mathrm{CFT}$. Such twist operators are typically used to construct the $n$th Renyi entropies of spatial entanglement in conformal field theories and are holographically dual to black holes with hyperbolic horizons. The displacement operator then tells us how the Renyi entropies change under small shape deformations of the entangling surface. We explicitly construct the bulk to boundary propagator for the displacement operator insertion as a linearized metric fluctuation of the hyperbolic black hole and use this to extract the coefficient of the displacement operator two point function ${C}_{D}$ in any dimension. The $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1$ limit of the twist displacement operator gives the same bulk response as the insertion of a null energy operator in vacuum, which is consistent with recent results on the shape dependence of entanglement entropy and modular energy.

Shape Deformations of Charged Renyi Entropies from Holography

Stefano Baiguera, Lorenzo Bianchi, Shira Chapman +1 more

Charged and symmetry-resolved R'enyi entropies are entanglement measures quantifying the degree of entanglement within different charge sectors of a theory with a conserved global charge. We use holography to determine the dependence of charged R'enyi entropies on small shape deformations away from a spherical or planar entangling surface in general dimensions. This dependence is completely characterized by a single coefficient appearing in the two point function of the displacement operator associated with the R'enyi defect. We extract this coefficient using its relation to the one point function of the stress tensor in the presence of a deformed entangling surface. This is mapped to a holographic calculation in the background of a deformed charged black hole with hyperbolic horizon. We obtain numerical solutions for different values of the chemical potential and replica number $n$ in various spacetime dimensions, as well as analytic expressions for small chemical potential near $n=1$. When the R'enyi defect becomes supersymmetric, we demonstrate a conjectured relation between the two point function of the displacement operator and the conformal weight of the twist operator.

Rényi entropy and conformal defects

Lorenzo Bianchi, Marco Meineri, Robert Cobb Myers +1 more

We propose a field theoretic framework for calculating the dependence of Rényi entropies on the shape of the entangling surface in a conformal field theory. Our approach rests on regarding the corresponding twist operator as a conformal defect and in particular, we define the displacement operator which implements small local deformations of the entangling surface. We identify a simple constraint between the coefficient defining the two-point function of the displacement operator and the conformal weight of the twist operator, which consolidates a number of distinct conjectures on the shape dependence of the Rényi entropy. As an example, using this approach, we examine a conjecture regarding the universal coefficient associated with a conical singularity in the entangling surface for CFTs in any number of spacetime dimensions. We also provide a general formula for the second order variation of the Rényi entropy arising from small deformations of a spherical entangling surface, extending Mezei’s results for the entanglement entropy.

Holographic calculation for large interval Rényi entropy at high temperature

Bin Chen, Jie-qiang Wu

In this paper, we study the holographic R\'enyi entropy of a large interval on a circle at high temperature for the two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) dual to pure ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{3}$ gravity. In the field theory, the R\'enyi entropy is encoded in the CFT partition function on $n$-sheeted torus connected with each other by a large branch cut. As proposed by Chen and Wu [Large interval limit of R\'enyi entropy at high temperature, arXiv:1412.0763], the effective way to read the entropy in the large interval limit is to insert a complete set of state bases of the twist sector at the branch cut. Then the calculation transforms into an expansion of four-point functions in the twist sector with respect to ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{2\ensuremath{\pi}TR}{n}}$. By using the operator product expansion of the twist operators at the branch points, we read the first few terms of the R\'enyi entropy, including the leading and next-to-leading contributions in the large central charge limit. Moreover, we show that the leading contribution is actually captured by the twist vacuum module. In this case by the Ward identity the four-point functions can be derived from the correlation function of four twist operators, which is related to double interval entanglement entropy. Holographically, we apply the recipe in [T. Faulkner, The entanglement R\'enyi entropies of disjoint intervals in AdS/CFT, arXiv:1303.7221] and [T. Barrella et al., Holographic entanglement beyond classical gravity, J. High Energy Phys. 09 (2013) 109] to compute the classical R\'enyi entropy and its one-loop quantum correction, after imposing a new set of monodromy conditions. The holographic classical result matches exactly with the leading contribution in the field theory up to ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}4\ensuremath{\pi}TR}$ and ${l}^{6}$, while the holographical one-loop contribution is in exact agreement with next-to-leading results in field theory up to ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{6\ensuremath{\pi}TR}{n}}$ and ${l}^{4}$ as well.

Shape Dependence of Holographic Rényi Entropy in Conformal Field Theories

Xi Dong

We develop a framework for studying the well-known universal term in the Rényi entropy for an arbitrary entangling region in four-dimensional conformal field theories that are holographically dual to gravitational theories. The shape dependence of the Rényi entropy S_{n} is described by two coefficients: f_{b}(n) for traceless extrinsic curvature deformations and f_{c}(n) for Weyl tensor deformations. We provide the first calculation of the coefficient f_{b}(n) in interacting theories by relating it to the stress tensor one-point function in a deformed hyperboloid background. The latter is then determined by a straightforward holographic calculation. Our results show that a previous conjecture f_{b}(n)=f_{c}(n), motivated by surprising evidence from a variety of free field theories and studies of conical defects, fails holographically.

BCFT entanglement entropy at large central charge and the black hole interior

James Sully, Mark Van Raamsdonk B, David Wakeham

Abstract In this note, we consider entanglement and Renyi entropies for spatial subsystems of a boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) or of a CFT in a state constructed using a Euclidean BCFT path integral. Holographic calculations suggest that these entropies undergo phase transitions as a function of time or parameters describing the subsystem; these arise from a change in topology of the RT surface. In recent applications to black hole physics, such transitions have been seen to govern whether or not the bulk entanglement wedge of a (B)CFT region includes a portion of the black hole interior and have played a crucial role in understanding the semiclassical origin of the Page curve for evaporating black holes. In this paper, we reproduce these holographic results via direct (B)CFT calculations. Using the replica method, the entropies are related to correlation functions of twist operators in a Euclidean BCFT. These correlations functions can be expanded in various channels involving intermediate bulk or boundary operators. Under certain sparseness conditions on the spectrum and OPE coefficients of bulk and boundary operators, we show that the twist correlators are dominated by the vacuum block in a single channel, with the relevant channel depending on the position of the twists. These transitions between channels lead to the holographically observed phase transitions in entropies.

Temporal Entanglement from Twist Correlators in 2d Conformal Field Theory and Holography

Alice Bernamonti, Federico Galli, Michal P. Heller +2 more

We formulate timelike entanglement entropy and its Rényi extension in two-dimensional conformal field theory through the analytic continuation of replica twist correlators to time-ordered, timelike-separated insertions. This field-theoretic construction grounds and generalizes recent developments, and applies to temporal subregions of arbitrary extent. Within three-dimensional holography, the semiclassical boundary correlator identifies boundary-anchored complex geodesics as the relevant bulk saddles and selects the one with the smallest real part of the length. This provides a direct boundary derivation of the proposed complex extremal surface prescription and extends to Rényi index $n>1$, for which we explicitly construct the corresponding complex cosmic brane geometry in the vacuum. We develop these ideas in several representative settings, including locally and globally excited states and quantum operator quenches, making manifest the precise agreement between boundary twist correlator and bulk complex geodesic calculations. For AdS-Vaidya, our approach predicts a different result from earlier piecewise geodesic constructions, while reproducing the field theory answer. Across these examples, the operator ordering uniquely determines the imaginary part of the complex-valued entropy, which is quantized in units of $cπ/6$ and sensitive to the effective causal structure but not to the underlying dynamics.
