Hidden magnetism in periodically modulated one dimensional dipolar fermions

Abstract

The experimental realization of time-dependent ultracold lattice systems has paved the way towards the implementation of new Hubbard-like Hamiltonians. We show that in a one-dimensional two-components lattice dipolar Fermi gas the competition between long range repulsion and correlated hopping induced by periodically modulated on-site interaction allows for the formation of hidden magnetic phases, with degenerate protected edge modes. The magnetism, characterized solely by string-like nonlocal order parameters, manifests in the charge and/or in the spin degrees of freedom. Such behavior is enlighten by employing Luttinger liquid theory and numerical methods. The range of parameters for which hidden magnetism is present can be reached by means of the currently available experimental setups and probes.

Revealing hidden antiferromagnetic correlations in doped Hubbard chains via string correlators

Timon Hilker, Guillaume Salomon, Fabian Grusdt +5 more

Topological phases, like the Haldane phase in spin-1 chains, defy characterization through local order parameters. Instead, nonlocal string order parameters can be employed to reveal their hidden order. Similar diluted magnetic correlations appear in doped one-dimensional lattice systems owing to the phenomenon of spin-charge separation. Here we report on the direct observation of such hidden magnetic correlations via quantum gas microscopy of hole-doped ultracold Fermi-Hubbard chains. The measurement of nonlocal spin-density correlation functions reveals a hidden finite-range antiferromagnetic order, a direct consequence of spin-charge separation. Our technique, which measures nonlocal order directly, can be readily extended to higher dimensions to study the complex interplay between magnetic order and density fluctuations.

Bond Order Solid of Two-Dimensional Dipolar Fermions

S. G. Bhongale, Ludwig Mathey, Shan-Wen Tsai +2 more

The recent experimental realization of dipolar Fermi gases near or below quantum degeneracy provides an opportunity to engineer Hubbard-like models with long-range interactions. Motivated by these experiments, we chart out the theoretical phase diagram of interacting dipolar fermions on the square lattice at zero temperature and half filling. We show that, in addition to p-wave superfluid and charge density wave order, two new and exotic types of bond order emerge generically in dipolar fermion systems. These phases feature homogeneous density but periodic modulations of the kinetic hopping energy between nearest or next-nearest neighbors. Similar, but manifestly different, phases of two-dimensional correlated electrons have previously only been hypothesized and termed "density waves of nonzero angular momentum." Our results suggest that these phases can be constructed flexibly with dipolar fermions, using currently available experimental techniques.

Hidden Charge Orders in Low-Dimensional Mott Insulators

Serena Fazzini, Arianna Montorsi

The opening of a charge gap driven by interaction is a fingerprint of the transition to a Mott insulating phase. In strongly correlated low-dimensional quantum systems, it can be associated to the ordering of hidden non-local operators. For Fermionic 1D models, in the presence of spin–charge separation and short-ranged interaction, a bosonization analysis proves that such operators are the parity and/or string charge operators. In fact, a finite fractional non-local parity charge order is also capable of characterizing some two-dimensional Mott insulators, in both the Fermionic and the bosonic cases. When string charge order takes place in 1D, degenerate edge modes with fractional charge appear, peculiar of a topological insulator. In this article, we review the above framework, and we test it to investigate through density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) numerical analysis the robustness of both hidden orders at half-filling in the 1D Fermionic Hubbard model extended with long range density-density interaction. The preliminary results obtained at finite size including several neighbors in the case of dipolar, screened and unscreened repulsive Coulomb interactions, confirm the phase diagram of the standard extended Hubbard model. Besides the trivial Mott phase, the bond ordered and charge density wave insulating phases are also not destroyed by longer ranged interaction, and still manifest hidden non-local orders.

Low energy quantum regimes of 1D dipolar Hubbard model with correlated hopping

Serena Fazzini, Luca Barbiero, Arianna Montorsi

We apply the bosonization technique to derive the phase diagram of a balanced unit density two-component dipolar Fermi gas in a one dimensional lattice geometry. The considered interaction processes are of the usual contact and dipolar long-range density-density type together with peculiar correlated hopping terms which can be generated dynamically. Rigorous bounds for the transition lines are obtained in the weak coupling regime. In addition to the standard bosonization description, we derive the low energy phase diagram taking place when part of the interaction is embodied non-perturbatively in the single component Hamiltonians. In this case the Luttinger liquid regime is shown to become unstable with respect to the opening of further gapped phases, among which insulating bond ordered wave and Haldane phases, the latter with degenerate edge modes.

Hidden String Order in a Hole Superconductor with Extended Correlated Hopping

Ravindra W. Chhajlany, Przemysław R. Grzybowski, Julia Stasińska +2 more

Ultracold fermions in one-dimensional, spin-dependent nonoverlapping optical lattices are described by a nonstandard Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor correlated hopping. In the limit of a kinetically constraining value of the correlated hopping equal to the normal hopping, we map the invariant subspaces of the Hamiltonian exactly to free spinless fermion chains of varying lengths. As a result, the system exactly manifests spin-charge separation and we obtain the system properties for arbitrary filling: ground state collective order characterized by a spin gap, which can be ascribed to an unconventional critical hole superconductor associated with finite long range nonlocal string order. We study the system numerically away from the integrable point and show the persistence of both long range string order and spin gap for appropriate parameters as well as a transition to a ferromagnetic state.
