Abstract

Abstract Modern theories of quantum magnetism predict exotic multipolar states in weakly interacting strongly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor (NN) inchain exchange in high magnetic fields. Experimentally these states remained elusive so far. Here we report strong indications of a magnetic field-induced nematic liquid arising above a field of ~13 T in the edge-sharing chain cuprate LiSbCuO4 ≡ LiCuSbO4. This interpretation is based on the observation of a field induced spin-gap in the measurements of the 7Li NMR spin relaxation rate T1−1 as well as a contrasting field-dependent power-law behavior of T1−1 vs. T and is further supported by static magnetization and ESR data. An underlying theoretical microscopic approach favoring a nematic scenario is based essentially on the NN XYZ exchange anisotropy within a model for frustrated spin-1/2 chains and is investigated by the DMRG technique. The employed exchange parameters are justified qualitatively by electronic structure calculations for LiCuSbO4.

Modern theories of quantum magnetism predict exotic multipolar states in weakly interacting strongly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor (NN) inchain exchange in high magnetic fields. Experimentally these states remained elusive so far. Here we report the evidence for a long-sought magnetic field-induced nematic state arising above a field of $\sim 13$ T in the edge-sharing chain cuprate LiSbCuO$_4$ $\equiv$ LiCuSbO$_4$. This interpretation is based on the observation of a field induced spin-gap in the measurements of the $^7$Li NMR spin relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ as well as a contrasting field-dependent power-law behavior of $T_1^{-1}$ vs. $T$ and is further supported by static magnetization and ESR data. Field and temperature dependence of NMR relaxation rate in the magnetic quadrupolar liquid phase of spin- 12 frustrated ferromagnetic chains

Masahiro Sato, Toshiya Hikihara, Tsutomu Momoi

It is generally difficult experimentally to distinguish magnetic multipolar orders in spin systems. Recently, it was proposed that the temperature dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation rate $1/{T}_{1}$ can involve an indirect but clear signature of the field-induced spin nematic or multipolar Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid phase [M. Sato, T. Momoi, and A. Furusaki, Phys. Rev. B 79, 060406(R) (2009)]. In this paper, we evaluate accurately the field and temperature dependence of $1/{T}_{1}$ in spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ frustrated ${J}_{1}$-${J}_{2}$ chains combining field-theoretical techniques with numerical data. Our results demonstrate that isotherms of $1/{T}_{1}$ as a function of magnetic field also exhibit distinctive nonmonotonic behavior in spin nematic TL liquid, in contrast with the standard TL liquid in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain. The relevance of our results to quasi-one-dimensional edge-sharing cuprate magnets, such as ${\mathrm{LiCuVO}}_{4}$, is discussed.

Magnetic Excitations of Spin Nematic State in Frustrated Ferromagnetic Chain

Hiroaki Onishi

By exploiting density-matrix renormalization group techniques, we investigate the dynamical spin structure factor of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions in an applied magnetic field. In a field-induced spin nematic regime, we find gapless longitudinal and gapped transverse spin excitation spectra, in accordance with quasi-long-ranged longitudinal and short-ranged transverse spin correlations, respectively. The gapless point coincides with the dominant longitudinal spin correlation, whereas the gap position exhibits a characteristic field dependence contradicting the dominant transverse spin correlation.

NMR relaxation rate and dynamical structure factors in nematic and multipolar liquids of frustrated spin chains under magnetic fields

Masahiro Sato, Tsutomu Momoi, Akira Furusaki

Recently, it has been shown that spin nematic (quadrupolar) or higher multipolar correlation functions exhibit a quasi-long-range order in the wide region of the field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid (TLL) phase in spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ zigzag chains. In this Rapid Communication, we point out that the temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate $1/{T}_{1}$ in these multipolar TLLs is qualitatively different from that in more conventional TLLs of one-dimensional quantum magnets (e.g., the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain); $1/{T}_{1}$ decreases with lowering temperature in multipolar TLL. We also discuss low-energy features in spin dynamical structure factors which are characteristic of the multipolar TLL phases.

Spin-Nematic and Spin-Liquid Phases in Low-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

Tôru Sakai

The spin nematic phase, which is a kind of multipole phases, has attracted a lot of interest in the field of the strongly correlated electron systems, as well as the quantum spin liquid phase. Using the numerical exact diagonalization, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation, and the finite-size scaling analysis, it is found that some spin nematic and spin liquid phases appear in the anisotropic and/or frustrated quantum spin systems. In our previous work, quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin systems with the easy-axis anisotropy in magnetic field are theoretically investigated using the numerical exact diagonalization, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and the finite-size scaling analysis[1]. It was found that a field-induced nematic phase appears at some critical field in the anisotropic spin ladder and the mixed spin chain. The nematic phase is characterized by the power-law decay in the correlation function of the second-order spin moment. In addition at some higher critical field a quantum phase transition can occur to the conventional field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Several typical magnetization curves calculated by DMRG are presented. We will also propose an experiment to observe these field-induced transitions by NMR measurements. The field-induced incommensurate order observed in azurite, which is modeled by the distorted diamond chain, by the recent NMR measurement will be also discussed. Recently the field-induced nematic phase was observed on the frustrated spin ladder system[2,3]. So we study on a frustrated spin ladder system[4], using the numerical diagonalization and DMRG. As a result, it is found that several exotic quantum phases, including the spin-nematic liquid phase. We also report some exact eigen states of the present model. [1] T. Sakai, T. Tonegawa and K. Vector chiral and multipolar orders in the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic frustrated chain in magnetic field

Takashi Hikihara, Lars Kecke, Tsutomu Momoi +1 more

We study the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor J_1 and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor J_2 exchange couplings in the presence of magnetic field. We use both numerical approaches (the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalization) and effective field-theory approach, and obtain the ground-state phase diagram for wide parameter range of the coupling ratio J_1/J_2. The phase diagram is rich and has a variety of phases, including the vector chiral phase, the nematic phase, and other multipolar phases. In the vector chiral phase, which appears in relatively weak magnetic field, the ground state exhibits long-range order (LRO) of vector chirality which spontaneously breaks a parity symmetry. The nematic phase shows a quasi-LRO of antiferro-nematic spin correlation, and arises as a result of formation of two-magnon bound states in high magnetic fields. Similarly, the higher multipolar phases, such as triatic (p=3) and quartic (p=4) phases, are formed through binding of p magnons near the saturation fields, showing quasi-LRO of antiferro-multipolar spin correlations. The multipolar phases cross over to spin density wave phases as the magnetic field is decreased, before encountering a phase transition to the vector chiral phase at a lower field. The implications of our results to quasi-one-dimensional frustrated magnets (e.g., LiCuVO_4) are discussed.
