Abstract

Abstract We report the first all-optical production of dual Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) of paired 6 Li (fermion) and one spin state of 7 Li (boson) at the magnetic field where the s -wave interactions between fermions are resonant. Fermions are cooled efficiently by evaporative cooling and they serve as coolant for bosons. As a result, the dual condensates can be achieved by using a simple experimental apparatus and procedures, as in the case of the all-optical production of a single BEC. We show that the all-optical method enables us to realize variety of ultracold Bose–Fermi mixtures.

Dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{7}$Li and $^{133}$Cs

Y.-D. Chen, W. -X. Li, Y.-T. Sun +3 more

We report the creation of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of $^{7}$Li and $^{133}$Cs. These BECs are formed in a bichromatic optical dipole trap created with 1550-nm and 780-nm laser beams. During the production process, an external magnetic field of 886~G is applied to adjust the scattering lengths to $a_{\rm{Cs}} = 123a_0$, $a_{\rm{Li}} = 484a_0$, and $a_{\rm{LiCs}} = 248a_0$. These scattering lengths allow for efficient evaporation and sympathetic cooling. The dual-species BECs are typically produced with $1.5\times 10^4$ Cs atoms and $6.0\times 10^3$ Li atoms. This quantum degenerate mixture of Li and Cs provides an ideal platform for exploring phenomena such as polarons and Efimov trimers, as well as for creating ground-state LiCs molecules.

We report the creation of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$. These BECs are formed in a bichromatic optical dipole trap created with 1550- and 780-nm laser beams. During the production process, an external magnetic field of 886 G is applied to adjust the scattering lengths to ${a}_{\mathrm{Cs}}=123{a}_{0}, {a}_{\mathrm{Li}}=484{a}_{0}$, and ${a}_{\mathrm{LiCs}}=248{a}_{0}$. These scattering lengths allow for efficient evaporation and sympathetic cooling. The dual-species BECs are typically produced with $1.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{4}$ Cs atoms and $6.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{3}$ Li atoms. Sympathetic evaporative cooling of /sup 6/Li by /sup 7/Li

Andrew G. Truscott, Kevin E. Strecker, Randall G. Hulet

Summary form only given. The last five years has seen an explosive growth in activity in the field of quantum degenerate gases, and there are now many realizations of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of trapped atomic gasses. However, only one experiment has produced a quantum degenerate Fermi gas. The ultimate goal of the experiment discussed here is to achieve a BCS phase transition in a trapped gas of fermionic /sup 6/Li atoms. This requires a phase-space density that is much higher than that needed for BEC, as the temperature must be made much less than the Fermi temperature.BEC in trapped gases has only been achieved using forced evaporative cooling. Since this method depends on elastic collisions, however, it fails for an ultracold Fermi gas, as the Pauli principle forbids s-wave collisions between identical fermions. To circumvent this obstacle, we simultaneously trap a /sup 7/Li-/sup 6/Li mixture, and use rf-induced evaporation to cool /sup 7/Li. /sup 6/Li is then cooled via thermalizing elastic collisions with the /sup 7/Li. The clover-leaf-type magnetic trap is loaded from a two-species magneto-optical trap (MOT).

All-Optical Production of Quantum Degeneracy and Molecular Bose-Einstein Condensation of 6 Li

Shu-Jin Deng, Peng-Peng Diao, Qian-Li Yu +1 more

We achieve a highly degenerate and strongly interacting Fermi gas in a mixture of the two lowest hyperfine states of 6 Li by direct evaporative cooling in a high power crossed optical dipole trap. The trap is loaded from a large atom number magneto-optical trap realized by a laser system of 2.5-W intracavity-frequency-doubled light output at 671 nm. With this system, we also demonstrate the production of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (mBEC) of 6 Li 2 , and observe the anisotropic expansion of Fermi gases in the so-called BEC-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer crossover regime.

Dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{23}$Na and $^{41}$K with tunable interactions

Jaeryeong Chang, Sung‐Jun Lee, Yoonsoo Kim +2 more

We report the creation of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of $^{23}$Na and $^{41}$K. Favorable background scattering lengths enable efficient sympathetic cooling of $^{41}$K via forced evaporative cooling of $^{23}$Na in a plugged magnetic trap and an optical dipole trap. The $1/e$ lifetime of the thermal mixture in the stretched hyperfine state exceeds 5 s in the presence of background scattering. At the end of evaporation, we create dual BECs in the immiscible phase, with about $3\times10^5$ $^{23}$Na atoms surrounding $5\times10^4$ $^{41}$K atoms. To further enable the tuning of the interspecies interaction strength, we locate multiple Feshbach resonances at magnetic fields up to 100 G. The broadest $s$-wave resonance located at 73.4(3) G features a favorable width of 1.8(2) G. This work sets the stage for the creation of ultracold gases of strongly dipolar bosonic $^{23}$Na$^{41}$K molecules as well as the exploration of many-body physics in bosonic $^{23}$Na-$^{41}$K mixtures.
