Abstract

Abstract We investigate the applicability of the two major approximations which are most commonly employed in the study of the quantum Rabi model, namely the description of a resonant cavity mode as a single-mode quantized field and the use of the rotating wave approximation. Starting from the Hamiltonian of a two-level system interacting with a multi-mode quantized field, we perform the canonical transformation of the field operators. This allows one to partition the Hamiltonian of the system into two parts. The first part is the interaction of the two-level system with a single collective field mode, while the second one describes the interaction with field fluctuations. The first part is usually associated with the resonant cavity mode. This division enables us to determine the applicability condition of the single-mode approximation. In addition we identify simple approximate relations for the description of the eigenstates, eigenfunctions and the time evolution of the quantum Rabi model beyond the rotating wave approximation.

Eigenvalues and Eigenstates of Quantum Rabi Model

Andrei V. Ivanov

The scientific interest in the analytical solution of the quantum Rabi model is due to the widespread use of this simple model in quantum optics, quantum computing, cavity QED, and nanoelectromechanical systems. This interest is related to the need for the theoretical description of the interaction of a two-level system with a quantum oscillator in the case when the rotating wave approximation fails. In this Letter, we present an approach to the exact diagonalization of the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian. This approach is based on the properties of the Pauli operators and allows us to readily solve the stationary Schrodinger equation for a two-level system. First, we demonstrate the applicability of the approach to the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian to get the well-known solution. Then, we obtain the eigenvalues and eigenstates for the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian using the proposed approach. It is shown that the obtained eigenstates can be represented in the basis of the eigenstates of the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian.

A simple, analytic solution of the Rabi model using multiple-scales

Luis Octavio Castaños-Cervantes

We considered the semiclassical Rabi model, that is, a two-level system interacting with a single-mode, classical field. In resonance and for an arbitrary initial state of the system, we obtained a simple, approximate, and analytic solution that takes into account the counterrotating terms and that is accurate as long as the Rabi frequency is smaller than or equal to 1/2 (1/4) of the angular frequency of the field and 1 (10) Rabi oscillations are considered. In addition, the approximate solution has the same level of complexity as that obtained with the rotating-wave-approximation (RWA) and allows one to describe the evolution of the Bloch vector of the system in terms of a \textit{slow-precessional} and a \textit{fast-nutational} motion similar to that of a symmetric top with one point fixed. Finally, the approximate solution also leads to a simple criterion that allows one to determine the accuracy of the solution in the RWA.

Eigenstates of two-level systems in a single-mode quantum field: from quantum Rabi model to N -atom Dicke model in the Coulomb gauge

Abstract In the present paper we show that the Hamiltonian describing the resonant interaction of N two-level systems with a single-mode electromagnetic quantum field in the Coulomb gauge can be diagonalized with a high degree of accuracy using a simple basis set of states. This allows one to find an analytical approximation for the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the system, which interpolates the numerical solution in a broad range of the coupling constant values. For the first time, we show that the energy spectrum of Dicke model (DM) as a function of N (with N ≫ 1 ) satisfies the simple scaling relation. In addition, the introduced basis states provide a regular way of calculating the corrections and estimating the convergence to the exact numerical solution. Analytical approximations and numerical results describing the energy spectrum are valid for both quantum Rabi model ( N = 1) and DM for N ⩾ 2 atoms.

Invariant Approach to the Interaction Between Several Fields and an Atom

Marco A. García-Márquez, I. Ramos-Prieto, H. M. Moya-Cessa

We present a general procedure to describe the dynamics of N degenerate quantized fields interacting resonantly with a two–level atom, all coupled with the same strength, within the rotating–wave approximation. Starting from the analysis of the two and three field cases, we generalize the method by identifying dynamical invariants that lead to a factorized form of the time–evolution operator. A unitary transformation reduces the problem to an effective Jaynes–Cummings Hamiltonian, where only one field interacts with the atom and the remaining modes contribute as free fields. Assuming initially coherent fields and an atomic superposition, we compute the atomic inversion and the mean photon number, revealing vacuum Rabi oscillations with a frequency determined by an effective coupling constant that exceeds the individual atom–field coupling, as well as the characteristic collapse-revival behavior.

Generalized Rotating‐Wave Approximation for the Quantum Rabi Model with Optomechanical Interaction

Wallace H. Montaño, Jesús A. Maytorena

Abstract The spectrum of energy and eigenstates of an hybrid cavity optomechanical system, where a cavity field mode interacts with a mechanical mode of a vibrating end mirror via radiation pressure and with a two level atom via electric dipole interaction are investigated. In the spirit of approximations developed for the quantum Rabi model beyond rotating‐wave approximation (RWA), the so‐called generalized RWA (GRWA) to diagonalize the tripartite Hamiltonian for arbitrary large couplings is implemented. Notably, the GRWA approach still allows to rewrite the hybrid Hamiltonian in a bipartite form, like a Rabi model with dressed atom‐field states (polaritons) coupled to mechanical modes through reparametrized coupling strength and Rabi frequency. A more accurate energy spectrum for a wide range of values of the atom‐photon and photon–phonon couplings, when compared to the RWA results is found. The fidelity between the numerical eigenstates and its approximated counterparts is also calculated. The degree of polariton‐phonon entanglement of the eigenstates presents a non‐monotonic behavior as the atom‐photon coupling varies, in contrast to the characteristic monotonic increase in the RWA treatment.

Interaction of a two-level atom with single-mode optical field beyond the rotating wave approximation

Ju Liu, Zhiyuan Li

One of the simplest models involving the atom-field interaction is the coupling of a single two-level atom with single-mode optical field. Under the rotating wave approximation, this problem is reduced to a form that can be solved exactly. But the approximation is only valid when the two levels are resonant or nearly resonant with the applied electromagnetic radiation. Here we present an analytical solution without the rotating wave approximation and applicable to general atom-field interaction far away from the resonance. We find that there exists remarkable influence of the initial phase of optical field on the Rabi oscillations and Rabi splitting, and this issue cannot be explored in the context of the rotating wave approximation. Due to the retention of the counter-rotating terms, higher-order harmonic appears during the Rabi splitting. The analytical solution suggests a way to regulate and control the quantum dynamics of a two-level atom and allows for exploring more essential features of the atom-field interaction.
