Abstract

We study the topological entanglement negativity between two spatial regions in (2+1)-dimensional Chern-Simons gauge theories by using the replica trick and the surgery method. For a bipartitioned or tripartitioned spatial manifold, we show how the topological entanglement negativity depends on the presence of quasiparticles and the choice of ground states. In particular, for two adjacent non-contractible regions on a tripartitioned torus, the entanglement negativity provides a simple way to distinguish Abelian and non-Abelian theories. Our method applies to a Chern-Simons gauge theory defined on an arbitrary oriented (2+1)-dimensional spacetime manifold. Our results agree with the edge theory approach in a recent work [35].

Edge theory approach to topological entanglement entropy, mutual information, and entanglement negativity in Chern-Simons theories

Xueda Wen, Shunji Matsuura, Shinsei Ryu

We develop an approach based on edge theories to calculate the entanglement entropy and related quantities in (2+1)-dimensional topologically ordered phases. Our approach is complementary to, e.g., the existing methods using replica trick and Witten's method of surgery, and applies to a generic spatial manifold of genus $g$, which can be bipartitioned in an arbitrary way. The effects of fusion and braiding of Wilson lines can be also straightforwardly studied within our framework. By considering a generic superposition of states with different Wilson line configurations, through an interference effect, we can detect, by the entanglement entropy, the topological data of Chern-Simons theories, e.g., the $R$ symbols, monodromy, and topological spins of quasiparticles. Furthermore, by using our method, we calculate other entanglement/correlation measures such as the mutual information and the entanglement negativity. In particular, it is found that the entanglement negativity of two adjacent noncontractible regions on a torus provides a simple way to distinguish Abelian and non-Abelian topological orders.

Topological Entanglement Entropy in Chern-Simons Theories and Quantum Hall Fluids

We compute directly the entanglement entropy of spatial regions in Chern-Simons gauge theories in 2 + 1 dimensions using surgery. We use these results to determine the universal topological piece of the entanglement entropy for Abelian and non-Abelian quantum Hall fluids.

Topological reflected entropy in Chern-Simons theories

Clément Berthière, Hongjie Chen, Yuefeng Liu +1 more

We study the reflected entropy between two spatial regions in $(2+1)$-dimensional Chern-Simons theories. Taking advantage of its replica trick formulation, the reflected entropy is computed using the edge theory approach and the surgery method. Both approaches yield identical results. In all cases considered in this paper, we find that the reflected entropy coincides with the mutual information, even though their R\'enyi versions differ in general. We also compute the odd entropy with the edge theory method. The reflected entropy and the odd entropy both possess a simple holographic dual interpretation in terms of entanglement wedge cross-section. We show that in $(2+1)$-dimensional Chern-Simons theories, both quantities are related in a similar manner as in two-dimensional holographic conformal field theories (CFTs), up to a classical Shannon piece.

Entanglement from topology in Chern-Simons theory

Grant Salton, Brian G. Swingle, Michael Walter

The way in which geometry encodes entanglement is a topic of much recent interest in quantum many-body physics and the AdS/CFT duality. This relation is particularly pronounced in the case of topological quantum field theories, where topology alone determines the quantum states of the theory. In this work, we study the set of quantum states that can be prepared by the Euclidean path integral in three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory. Specifically, we consider arbitrary three-manifolds with a fixed number of torus boundaries in both Abelian $U(1)$ and non-Abelian $SO(3)$ Chern-Simons theory. For the Abelian theory, we find that the states that can be prepared coincide precisely with the set of stabilizer states from quantum information theory. This constrains the multipartite entanglement present in this theory, but it also reveals that stabilizer states can be described by topology. In particular, we find an explicit expression for the entanglement entropy of a many-torus subsystem using only a single replica, as well as a concrete formula for the number of GHZ states that can be distilled from a tripartite state prepared through path integration. For the non-Abelian theory, we find a notion of ``state universality,'' namely that any state can be prepared to an arbitrarily good approximation. The manifolds we consider can also be viewed as toy models of multiboundary wormholes in AdS/CFT.

Multi-boundary entanglement in Chern-Simons theory with finite gauge groups

Siddharth Dwivedi, Andrea Addazi, Yang Zhou +1 more

Abstract We study the multi-boundary entanglement structure of the states prepared in (1+1) and (2+1) dimensional Chern-Simons theory with finite discrete gauge group G. The states in (1+1)-d are associated with Riemann surfaces of genus g with multiple S 1 boundaries and we use replica trick to compute the entanglement entropy for such states. In (2+1)-d, we focus on the states associated with torus link complements which live in the tensor product of Hilbert spaces associated with multiple T 2. We present a quantitative analysis of the entanglement structure for both abelian and non-abelian groups. For all the states considered in this work, we find that the entanglement entropy for direct product of groups is the sum of entropy for individual groups, i.e. EE(G 1 × G 2) = EE(G 1) + EE(G 2). Moreover, the reduced density matrix obtained by tracing out a subset of the total Hilbert space has a positive semidefinite partial transpose on any bi-partition of the remaining Hilbert space.

Interface contributions to topological entanglement in abelian Chern-Simons theory

Jackson R. Fliss, Xueda Wen, Onkar Parrikar +4 more

We study the entanglement entropy between (possibly distinct) topological phases across an interface using an Abelian Chern-Simons description with topological boundary conditions (TBCs) at the interface. From a microscopic point of view, these TBCs correspond to turning on particular gapping interactions between the edge modes across the interface. However, in studying entanglement in the continuum Chern-Simons description, we must confront the problem of non-factorization of the Hilbert space, which is a standard property of gauge theories. We carefully define the entanglement entropy by using an extended Hilbert space construction directly in the continuum theory. We show how a given TBC isolates a corresponding gauge invariant state in the extended Hilbert space, and hence compute the resulting entanglement entropy. We find that the sub-leading correction to the area law remains universal, but depends on the choice of topological boundary conditions. This agrees with the microscopic calculation of [1]. Additionally, we provide a replica path integral calculation for the entropy. In the case when the topological phases across the interface are taken to be identical, our construction gives a novel explanation of the equivalence between the left-right entanglement of (1+1)d Ishibashi states and the spatial entanglement of (2+1)d topological phases.
