Abstract

We perform an exact-diagonalization study of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice at finite magnetization $m=\frac{2}{3}$ with an emphasis on the $XY$ point $({J}_{z}=0)$ and in the presence of a small chiral term. Recent analytic work by Kumar et al. [K. Kumar, K. Sun, and E. Fradkin, Phys. Rev. B 90, 174409 (2014)] on the same model, using a newly developed flux attachment transformation, predicts a plateau at this value of the magnetization described by a chiral spin liquid (CSL) with a spin Hall conductance of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{xy}=\frac{1}{2}$. Such a state is topological in nature, has a ground-state degeneracy, and exhibits fractional excitations. We analyze the degeneracy structure in the low-energy manifold, identify the candidate topological states, and use them to compute the modular matrices and Chern numbers, all of which strongly agree with expected theoretical behavior for the ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{xy}=\frac{1}{2}$ CSL. In the limit of zero chirality, we find on most (not all) clusters that the topological invariants are still those of a CSL.

Chiral spin liquids on the kagome lattice

Krishna Kumar, Kai Sun, Eduardo Fradkin

We study the nearest-neighbor $XXZ$ Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. Here we consider the effects of several perturbations: (a) a chirality term, (b) a Dzyaloshinski-Moriya term, and (c) a ring-exchange type term on the bowties of the kagome lattice, and inquire if they can support chiral spin liquids as ground states. The method used to study these Hamiltonians is a flux attachment transformation that maps the spins on the lattice to fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field on the kagome lattice. This transformation requires us to consistently define a Chern-Simons term on the kagome lattice. We find that the chirality term leads to a chiral spin liquid even in the absence of an uniform magnetic field, with an effective spin Hall conductance of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{xy}^{s}=\frac{1}{2}$ in the regime of $XY$ anisotropy. The Dzyaloshinski-Moriya term also leads a similar chiral spin liquid but only when this term is not too strong. An external magnetic field also has the possibility of giving rise to additional plateaus which also behave like chiral spin liquids in the $XY$ regime. Finally, we consider the effects of a ring-exchange term and find that, provided its coupling constant is large enough, it may trigger a phase transition into a chiral spin liquid by the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal invariance.

Correlated spin liquids in the quantum kagome antiferromagnet at finite field: a renormalization group analysis

Santanu Pal, Anirban Mukherjee, Siddhartha Lal

We analyze the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ model on the kagome lattice at finite external magnetic field with the help of a non-perturbative zero-temperature renormalization group (RG) technique. The exact nature of the ground and excited state properties (e.g. gapped or gapless spectrum etc) of this system are still debated. Approximate methods have typically been adopted towards understanding the low-energy spectrum. Following the work of Kumar et al (2014 Phys. Rev. B 90 174409), we use a Jordan–Wigner transformation to map the spin problem into one of spinless fermions (spinons) in the presence of a statistical gauge field, and with nearest-neighbor interactions. While the work of Kumar et al was confined mostly to the plateau at 1/3-filling (magnetization per site) in the XY regime, we analyze the role of inter-spinon interactions in shaping the phases around this plateau in the entire XXZ model. The RG phase diagram obtained contains three spin liquid phases whose position is determined as a function of the exchange anisotropy and the energy scale for fluctuations arising from spinon scattering. Two of these spins liquids are topologically ordered states of matter with gapped, degenerate states on the torus. The gap for one of these phases corresponds to the one-spinon band gap of the Azbel–Hofstadter spectrum for the XY part of the Hamiltonian, while the other arises from two-spinon interactions. The Heisenberg point of this problem is found to lie within the interaction gapped spin liquid phase, in broad agreement with a recent experimental finding. The third phase is an algebraic spin liquid with a gapless Dirac spectrum for spinon excitations, and possess properties that show departures from the Fermi liquid paradigm. The three phase boundaries correspond to critical theories, and meet at a SU (2)-symmetric multicritical point. This special critical point agrees well with the gap-closing transition point predicted by Kumar et al . We discuss the relevance of our findings to various recent experiments, as well as results obtained from other theoretical analyses.

Variational Monte Carlo study of a chiral spin liquid in the extended Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice

Wen-Jun Hu, Wei Kang Zhu, Yi Zhang +3 more

We investigate the extended Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice by using Gutzwiller projected fermionic states and the variational Monte Carlo technique. In particular, when both second- and third-neighbor superexchanges are considered, we find that a gapped spin liquid described by nontrivial magnetic fluxes and long-range chiral-chiral correlations is energetically favored compared to the gapless U(1) Dirac state. Furthermore, the topological Chern number, obtained by integrating the Berry curvature, and the degeneracy of the ground state, by constructing linearly independent states, lead us to identify this flux state as the chiral spin liquid with a $C=1/2$ fractionalized Chern number.

S=12 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet revisited

Andreas Martin Läuchli, Julien Sudan, Roderich Moessner

We examine the perennial quantum spin liquid candidate $S=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. Our paper is based on achieving Lanczos diagonalization of the Hamiltonian on a 48 site cluster in sectors with dimensions as large as $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{11}$. The results reveal intricate structures in the low-lying energy spectrum. These structures by no means unambiguously support a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquid ground state, but instead appear compatible with several scenarios, including fourfold topological degeneracy, inversion symmetry breaking, and a combination thereof. We discuss finite-size effects, such as the apparent absence of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, and note that, while considerably reduced, some are still present for the largest cluster. Finally, we observe that an XXZ model in the Ising limit reproduces remarkably well the most striking features of finite-size spectra.

Nature of the Spin-Liquid Ground State of the S=1/2 Heisenberg Model on the Kagome Lattice

Stefan Depenbrock, Ian P. McCulloch, Ulrich Schollwöck

We perform a density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice to identify the conjectured spin liquid ground state. Exploiting SU(2) spin symmetry, which allows us to keep up to 16,000 DMRG states, we consider cylinders with circumferences up to 17 lattice spacings and find a spin liquid ground state with an estimated per site energy of -0.4386(5), a spin gap of 0.13(1), very short-range decay in spin, dimer and chiral correlation functions, and finite topological entanglement γ consistent with γ=log(2)2, ruling out gapless, chiral, or nontopological spin liquids in favor of a topological spin liquid of quantum dimension 2, with strong evidence for a gapped topological Z(2) spin liquid.

Chern-Simons theory of magnetization plateaus on the kagome lattice

Ponnuraj Krishnakumar

Frustrated spin systems on Kagome lattices have long been considered to be a promising candidate for realizing exotic spin liquid phases. Recently, there has been a lot of renewed interest in these systems with the discovery of experimental materials such as Volborthite and Herbertsmithite that have Kagome like structures. In this thesis I will focus on studying frustrated spin systems on the Kagome lattice using a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg model in the presence of an external magnetic field as well as other perturbations. Such a system is expected to give rise to magnetization platueaus which can exhibit topological characteristics in certain regimes. We will first develop a flux-attachment transformation that maps the Heisenberg spins (hard-core bosons) onto a problem of fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field. This mapping relies on being able to define a consistent Chern-Simons term on the lattice. Using this newly developed mapping we analyse the phases/magnetization plateaus that arise at the mean-field level and also consider the effects of adding fluctuations to various mean-fi eld states. Along the way, we show how to discretize an abelian Chern-Simons gauge theory on generic 2D planar lattices that satisfy certain conditions. We find that as long as there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the vertices and plaquettes defined on the graph, one can write down a discretized lattice version of the abelian Chern-Simons gauge theory. Using the newly developed flux attachment transformation, we show the existence of chiral spin liquid states for various magnetization plateaus for certain range of parameters in the XXZ Heisenberg model in the presence of an external magnetic field. Speci cally, in the regime of XY anisotropy the ground states at the 1/3 and 2/3 plateau are equivalent to a bosonic fractional quantum Hall Laughlin state with filling fraction 1/2 and that the 5/9 plateau is equivalent to the first bosonic Jain daughter state at filling fraction 2/3. Next, we also consider the effects of several perturbations: a) a chirality term, b) a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term, and c) a ring-exchange type term on the bowties of the kagome lattice, and inquire if they can also support chiral spin liquids as ground states. We find that the chirality term leads to a chiral spin liquid even in the absence of an uniform magnetic field, with an effective spin Hall conductance of 1/2 in the regime of XY anisotropy. The Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya term also leads a similar chiral spin liquid but only when this term is not too strong. An external magnetic field when combined with some of the above perturbations also has the possibility of giving rise to additional plateaus which also behave like chiral spin liquids in the XY regime. Under the in influence of a ring-exchange term we find that provided its coupling constant is large enough, it may trigger a phase transition into a chiral spin liquid by the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal invariance. Finally, we also present some numerical results based on some exact diagonalization studies. Here, we specifically focus on the 2/3-magnetization plateau which we previously argued should be a chiral spin liquid with a spin hall conductance of 1/2 . Such a topological state has a non-trivial ground state degeneracy and it excitations are described by semionic quasiparticles. In the numerical analysis, we analyse the ground state degeneracy structure on various Kagome clusters of different sizes. We compute modular matrices from the resultant minimally entangled states as well as the Chern numbers of various eigenstates all of which provide strong evidence that the 2/3-magnetization plateau very closely resembles a chiral spin liquid state with the expected characteristics.
