Abstract

We introduce an optomechanical scheme for the probabilistic preparation of single-phonon Fock states of mechanical modes based on photosubtraction. The quality of the produced mechanical state is confirmed by a number of indicators, including phonon statistics and conditional fidelity. We assess the detrimental effect of parameters such as the temperature of the mechanical system and address the feasibility of the scheme with state-of-the-art technology.

Single Phonon State of Mechanical Mode via Photon Subtraction

M. Miskeen Khan, Muhammad Javed Akram, Farhan Saif

We prepare single phonon Fock state of mechanical mode in optomechanical system based on photon subtraction process in the linear regime of optomechanical interaction. The correlation set between cavity and field modes is utilized to recast the state of a pre-cooled mechanical mode into a single phonon Fock state as the field mode is subjected to a photon subtraction type measurement at a dynamical instant of interaction time. The resultant conditional state of mechanical mode quantified by its Wigner function, exhibits an excellent compatibility with the standard single quantum Fock state. We confirm the nature of obtained state by calculating the phonon statistics, and conditional fidelity which approaches to unity for an instantaneous measurement time within an appropriate choice of parametric regime. Moreover, we also study the effects of temperature parameter for the preparation of target state. The present scheme can be realized to engineer the single quantum Fock state of macroscopic mechanical mode with currently available technology.

Optomechanical generation of a mechanical catlike state by phonon subtraction

Itay Shomroni, Liu Qiu, Tobias Jan Kippenberg

We propose a scheme to prepare a macroscopic mechanical oscillator in a catlike state, close to a coherent state superposition. The mechanical oscillator, coupled by radiation-pressure interaction to a field in an optical cavity, is first prepared close to a squeezed vacuum state using a reservoir engineering technique. The system is then probed using a short optical pulse tuned to the lower motional sideband of the cavity resonance, realizing a photon-phonon swap interaction. A photon number measurement of the photons emerging from the cavity then conditions a phonon-subtracted catlike state with a negative Wigner distribution exhibiting separated peaks and multiple interference fringes. We show that this scheme is feasible using state-of-the-art photonic crystal optomechanical system.

Heralded Single-Phonon Preparation, Storage, and Readout in Cavity Optomechanics

Christophe Galland, Nicolas Sangouard, Nicolás Piro +2 more

We show how to use the radiation pressure optomechanical coupling between a mechanical oscillator and an optical cavity field to generate in a heralded way a single quantum of mechanical motion (a Fock state). Starting with the oscillator close to its ground state, a laser pumping the upper motional sideband produces correlated photon-phonon pairs via optomechanical parametric down-conversion. Subsequent detection of a single scattered Stokes photon projects the macroscopic oscillator into a single-phonon Fock state. The nonclassical nature of this mechanical state can be demonstrated by applying a readout laser on the lower sideband to map the phononic state to a photonic mode and performing an autocorrelation measurement. Our approach proves the relevance of cavity optomechanics as an enabling quantum technology.

Room-Temperature Mechanical Resonator with a Single Added or Subtracted Phonon

Rishi N. Patel, Timothy P. McKenna, Zhaoyou Wang +5 more

A room-temperature mechanical oscillator undergoes thermal Brownian motion with an amplitude much larger than the amplitude associated with a single phonon of excitation. This motion can be read out and manipulated using laser light using a cavity-optomechanical approach. By performing a strong quantum measurement (i.e., counting single photons in the sidebands imparted on a laser), we herald the addition and subtraction of single phonons on the 300 K thermal motional state of a 4 GHz mechanical oscillator. To understand the resulting mechanical state, we implement a tomography scheme and observe highly non-Gaussian phase-space distributions. Using a maximum likelihood method, we infer the density matrix of the oscillator, and we confirm the counterintuitive doubling of the mean phonon number resulting from phonon addition and subtraction.

Dissipative phonon-Fock-state production in strong nonlinear optomechanics

G. D. de Moraes Neto, Víctor Montenegro, Victor Fernandes Teizen +1 more

We put forward a deterministic dissipative protocol to prepare phonon Fock states in nonlinear quantum optomechanical devices. The system is composed of a mechanical mode interacting with an optical field via radiation pressure, whereas the light mode is laser driven in the resolved blue-sideband regime. To keep our results tractable, we switch to an interaction picture in a displaced basis, where the effective Hamiltonian exhibits the selective photon-phonon interaction explicitly. After proper parameter adjustment and similarly to cavity-cooling schemes, the quantum evolution allows steering of the mechanical degree of freedom to the desired Fock state by directing the optical excitations dynamically towards the target phonon state. The numerical results, including decoherence on both the mechanical and the optical degrees of freedom, prove to be quite robust in the good- and bad-cavity regimes, with fidelities exceeding 95%. Finally, characterization of the achieved nonclassicality, as well as the limitations and feasibility of our protocol under experimental parameters, is also discussed.

Steady-state negative Wigner functions of nonlinear nanomechanical oscillators

Simon Rips, Martin Kiffner, Ignacio Wilson-Rae +1 more

We propose a scheme for preparing nanomechanical oscillators in nonclassical steady states, characterized by a pronounced negative Wigner function. In our optomechanical approach, the mechanical oscillator couples to multiple laser-driven resonances of an optical cavity. By lowering the resonance frequency of the oscillator via an inhomogeneous electrostatic field, we significantly enhance its intrinsic geometric nonlinearity per phonon. This causes the motional sidebands to split into separate spectral lines for each phonon number and transitions between individual phonon Fock states can be selectively addressed. We show that this enables the preparation of the nanomechanical oscillator in a single-phonon Fock state. Our scheme can, for example, be implemented with a carbon nanotube dispersively coupled to the evanescent field of a state of the art whispering gallery mode microcavity.
