Spin current contribution in the spectrum of collective excitations of degenerate partially polarized spin-1/2 fermions at separate dynamics of spin-up and spin-down fermions

Abstract

Abstract The spectrum of collective excitations of degenerate partially polarized spin-1/2 fermions is considered. The spin-up fermions and the spin-down fermions are considered as different fluids. Corresponding two-fluid hydrodynamics consistent with a non-linear Pauli equation is suggested. An equation of state for the spin current caused by the distribution of particles on different energy levels is suggested for the degenerate regime, where the spin current is caused by the Pauli blocking. Spectrum of three waves is found as a solution of the hydrodynamic equations: two sound waves and one spin wave. Their spectrums are calculated for two regimes: propagation parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the equilibrium spin polarization.

Extended hydrodynamics of degenerate partially spin polarized fermions with short-range interaction up to the third order by interaction radius approximation

Pavel A. Andreev

Abstract The possibility of the hydrodynamic description of ultracold fermions via the microscopic derivation of the model is described. Differently truncated hydrodynamic models are derived and compared. All models are based on the microscopic many-particle Schrödinger equation. Minimal coupling models based on the continuity and Euler equations are considered. An extended hydrodynamic model including the independent dynamics of the momentum flux (the pressure evolution) is derived. The influence of the spin polarization is described. The short-range interaction is considered in the isotropic limit. The interaction is considered up to the third order by interaction radius. Therefore, the single-fluid model of spin-1/2 fermions and the two-fluid model of spin-1/2 fermions are under consideration in this paper. Spectra of bulk collective excitations are derived and compared in terms of different models.

Three-fluid hydrodynamics of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Gergely Szirmai, P. Szépfalusy

We study excitations of the spin-1 Bose gas at finite temperatures and in the presence of a not-so-strong magnetic field or, equivalently, when the gas sample is partially polarized. Motivated by the success of two-fluid hydrodynamics of scalar superfluids we develop a three-fluid hydrodynamic description to treat the low-frequency and long-wavelength excitations of the spin-1 Bose gas. We derive coupled linear hydrodynamic equations of the three sounds and evaluate them numerically in a self-consistent mean-field approximation valid for dilute gas in the intermediate and critical temperature regions. In this latter region we identify the critical mode.

Quantum hydrodynamics of the spinor Bose–Einstein condensate at non-zero temperatures

Pavel A. Andreev, Ilia Mosaki, Mariya Iv. Trukhanova

A finite temperature hydrodynamic model is derived for the spin-1 ultracold bosons by the many-particle quantum hydrodynamic method. It is presented as the two fluid model of the Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) and normal fluid. The continuity, Euler, spin evolution, and nematic tensor evolution equations are derived for each fluid. The linear and quadratic Zeeman effects are included. Scalar and spin–spin like short-range interactions are considered in the first order by the interaction radius. Obtained hydrodynamic equations are also represented as the set of two nonlinear Pauli equations. The spectrum of the bulk collective excitations is considered for the ferromagnetic phase in the small temperature limit. The spin wave is not affected by the presence of the small temperature in the described minimal coupling model, where the thermal part of the spin-current of the normal fluid is neglected. The two sound waves are affected by the spin evolution in the same way as the change of spectrum of the single sound wave in BEC, where speed of sound is proportional to g1+g2 with gi as the interaction constants.

Quantum hydrodynamics description of spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates

Mariya Iv. Trukhanova, Yuri N. Obukhov

Abstract We develop a novel model of the magnetized spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) of neutral atoms, using the method of many-particle quantum hydrodynamic (QHD) and propose an original derivation of the system of continual equations. We consider bosons with a spin-spin interaction and a short range interaction in the first order in the interaction radius, on the of basis of the self-consistent field approximation of the QHD equations. We demonstrate that the dynamics of the fluid velocity and magnetization is determined by a nontrivial modification of the Euler and Landau–Lifshitz equation, and show that a nontrivial modification of the spin density evolution equation contains the spin torque effect that arises from the self-interactions between spins of the bosons. The properties of the dispersion spectrum of collective excitations are described. We obtain the new contribution of the self-interaction of spins in the spin wave spectrum together with the influence of an external magnetic field and spin-spin interactions between polarized particles. The anisotropic spin wave instability is predicted.

Grey solitons in the ultracold fermions at the full spin polarization

Pavel A. Andreev

A minimal coupling quantum hydrodynamic model of spin-1/2 fermions at the full spin polarization corresponding to a nonlinear Schrodinger equation is considered. The nonlinearity is primarily caused by the Fermi pressure. It provides an effective repulsion between fermions. However, there is the additional contribution of the short-range interaction appearing in the third order by the interaction radius. It leads to the modification of the pressure contribution. Solitons are considered for the infinite medium with no restriction on the amplitude of the wave. The Fermi pressure leads to the soliton in form of the area of decreased concentration. However, the center of solution corresponding to the area of minimal concentration has nonzero value of concentration. Therefore, the grey soliton is found. Soliton exist if the speed of its propagation is below the Fermi velocity. Keywords: degenerate fermions, hydrodynamics, non-linear Schrodinger equation, dark soliton, Fermi pressure.

Theory of transverse spin dynamics in a polarized Fermi liquid and an itinerant ferromagnet

V. P. Mineev

Linear equations for the transverse spin dynamics in a weakly polarized degenerate Fermi liquid are derived from the Landau-Silin phenomenological kinetic equation with a general two-particle collision integral. Unlike a previous treatment where the Fermi velocity and density of states were taken to be constant independent of polarization we make no such assumption. The equations found describe the spin dynamics in a paramagnetic Fermi liquid with finite polarization as well in an itinerant ferromagnet. The results are confirmed by field theoretical calculations based on the integral equation for the vertex function. The transverse spin wave frequency in a polarized paramagnetic Fermi liquid is found to be proportional to ${k}^{2}$ with a complex diffusion coefficient such that the damping has a finite value proportional to the quasiparticles scattering rate at $T=0$. This behavior of a polarized Fermi liquid contrasts with the behavior of a Heisenberg ferromagnet in the hydrodynamic regime where the transverse spin-wave attenuation appears in terms proportional to ${k}^{4}$. The reactive part of the diffusion coefficient in a paramagnetic state at $T=0$ proves to be inversely proportional to the magnetization whereas in a ferromagnetic it is directly proportional to the magnetization. The dissipative part of the diffusion coefficient at $T=0$ in the paramagnetic state is polarization independent, whereas in the ferromagnetic state it is proportional to the square of the magnetization. Moreover, the spin wave spectrum in a ferromagnetic Fermi liquid proves to be unstable demonstrating the difficulty of applying a Fermi liquid description to itinerant ferromagnetism.
