Minimum output entropy of a non-Gaussian quantum channel

Abstract

We introduce a model of a non-Gaussian quantum channel that stems from the composition of two physically relevant processes occurring in open quantum systems, namely, amplitude damping and dephasing. For it we find input states approaching zero output entropy while respecting the input energy constraint. These states fully exploit the infinite dimensionality of the Hilbert space. Upon truncation of the latter, the minimum output entropy remains finite, and optimal input states for such a case are conjectured thanks to numerical evidence.

MINIMUM OUTPUT ENTROPY OF A GAUSSIAN BOSONIC CHANNEL

Vittorio Giovannetti, Lorenzo Maccone, Saikat Guha +3 more

The entropy at the output of a Bosonic channel is analyzed when coherent fields are randomly added to the signal. Coherent-state inputs are conjectured to provide the minimum output entropy. Supporting physical and mathematical evidence is provided.

Quantum Channels and their Minimum Output Entropies

Nathan Mehlhop, William Travis Ogletree

We investigate non-random quantum channels generated from the representation the- ory of orthogonal quantum groups to perform numerical computations for estimates of their minimum output entropies. In doing so, we address the violation of the additiv- ity conjecture for minimum output entropies, previously established through probabilistic proofs. This violation is relevant because given two quantum channels whose minimum output entropies sum to a value greater than the minimum output entropy of their tensor product channel it can be shown that more information can be sent with greater fidelity via the two channels in parallel than by using each separately. This is directly related to the relevance of quantum entanglement in quantum information theory. \nWe numerically compute minimum output entropies for single quantum channels and tensor products of quantum channels with respect to both Von Neumann and Renyi en- tropies. We then proceed to compute entropy estimates for nonplanar channels directly with Temperley-Lieb Category Theory. We conclude by discussing which of our choices for channels are optimal for entangled inputs.

Generalized minimal output entropy conjecture for one-mode Gaussian channels: definitions and some exact results

Vittorio Giovannetti, Alexander Semenovich Holevo, Seth Lloyd +1 more

A formulation of the generalized minimal output entropy conjecture for Gaussian channels is presented. It asserts that, for states with fixed input entropy, the minimal value of the output entropy of the channel (i.e. the minimal output entropy increment for fixed input entropy) is achieved by Gaussian states. In the case of centered channels (i.e. channels which do not add squeezing to the input state) this implies that the minimum is obtained by thermal (Gibbs) inputs. The conjecture is proved to be valid in some special cases.

Minimum output entropy of bosonic channels: A conjecture

Vittorio Giovannetti, Saikat Guha, Seth Lloyd +2 more

The von Neumann entropy at the output of a bosonic channel with thermal noise is analyzed. Coherent-state inputs are conjectured to minimize this output entropy. Physical and mathematical evidence in support of the conjecture is provided. A stronger conjecture---that output states resulting from coherent-state inputs majorize the output states from other inputs---is also discussed.

Energy-Constrained Private and Quantum Capacities of Quantum Channels

Mark M. Wilde, Haoyu Qi

This paper establishes a general theory of energy-constrained quantum and private capacities of quantum channels. We begin by defining various energy-constrained communication tasks, including quantum communication with a uniform energy constraint, entanglement transmission with an average energy constraint, private communication with a uniform energy constraint, and secret key transmission with an average energy constraint. We develop several code conversions, which allow us to conclude non-trivial relations between the capacities corresponding to the above tasks. We then show how the regularized, energy-constrained coherent information is equal to the capacity for the first two tasks and is an achievable rate for the latter two tasks, whenever the energy observable satisfies the Gibbs condition of having a well-defined thermal state for all temperatures and the channel satisfies a finite output-entropy condition. For degradable channels satisfying these conditions, we find that the single-letter energy-constrained coherent information is equal to all of the capacities. We finally apply our results to degradable quantum Gaussian channels and recover several results already established in the literature (in some cases, we prove new results in this domain). Contrary to what may appear from some statements made in the literature recently, proofs of these results do not require the solution of any kind of minimum output entropy conjecture or entropy photon-number inequality.
