Abstract

We compute the ground-state correlation functions of an exactly solvable chain of integer spins, recently introduced in [R. Movassagh and P. W. Shor, arXiv:1408.1657], whose ground state can be expressed in terms of a uniform superposition of all colored Motzkin paths. Our analytical results show that for spin $s\ensuremath{\ge}2$ there is a violation of the cluster decomposition property. This has to be contrasted with $s=1$, where the cluster property holds. Correspondingly, for $s=1$ one gets a light-cone profile in the propagation of excitations after a local quench, while the cone is absent for $s=2$, as shown by time dependent density-matrix renormalization group. Moreover, we introduce an original solvable model of half-integer spins, which we refer to as Fredkin spin chain, whose ground state can be expressed in terms of superposition of all Dyck paths. For this model we exactly calculate the magnetization and correlation functions, finding that for $s=1/2$, a conelike propagation occurs, while for higher spins, $s\ensuremath{\ge}3/2$, the colors prevent any cone formation and clustering is violated, together with square root deviation from the area law for the entanglement entropy.

Dynamics and correlations in Motzkin and Fredkin spin chains

Luca Dell’Anna, Luca Barbiero, A Trombettoni

Abstract The Motzkin and Fredkin quantum spin chains are described by frustration-free Hamiltonians recently introduced and studied because of their anomalous behaviors in the correlation functions and in the entanglement properties. In this paper we analyze their quantum dynamical properties, focusing in particular on the time evolution of the excitations driven by a quantum quench, looking at the correlations functions of spin operators defined along different directions, and discussing the results in relation with the cluster decomposition property. We show that, for such models, one can have absence of cone-like structure in the propagation of the excitations after a quantum quench, together with a violation of the cluster decomposition property for the ground state characterized by only a logarithmic violation of the area law for the entanglement entropy.

Symmetries, correlation functions, and entanglement of general quantum Motzkin spin-chains

Varun Menon, Andi Gu, Ramis Movassagh

Motzkin spin-chains, which include 'colorless' (integer spin $s=1$) and 'colorful' ($s \geq 2$) variants, are one-dimensional (1D) local integer spin models notable for their lack of a conformal field theory (CFT) description of their low-energy physics, despite being gapless. The colorful variants are particularly unusual, as they exhibit power-law violation of the area-law of entanglement entropy (as $\sqrt{n}$ in system size $n$), rather than a logarithmic violation as seen in a CFT. In this work, we analytically discover several unique properties of these models, potentially suggesting a new universality class for their low-energy physics. We identify a complex structure of symmetries and unexpected scaling behavior in spin-spin correlations, which deviate from known 1D universality classes. Specifically, the $s=1$ chain exhibits $U(1)$ spontaneous symmetry breaking and ferromagnetic order. Meanwhile, the $s \geq 2$ chains do not appear to spontaneously break any symmetries, but display quasi-long-range algebraic order with power-law decaying correlations, inconsistent with standard Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) critical exponents. We also derive exact asymptotic scaling expressions for entanglement measures in both colorless and colorful chains, generalizing previous results of Movassagh [J. Math Phys. (2017)], while providing benchmarks for potential quantum simulation experiments. The combination of hardness of classically simulating such systems along with the analytical tractability of their ground state properties position Motzkin spin chains as intriguing candidates for exploring quantum computational advantage in simulating many-body physics.

The gap of the area-weighted Motzkin spin chain is exponentially small

Lionel Levine, Ramis Movassagh

Abstract We prove that the energy gap of the model proposed by Zhang et al (2016 arXiv:1606.07795) is exponentially small in the square of the system size. In Movassagh and Shor (2016 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA ) a class of exactly solvable quantum spin chain models was proposed that have integer spins ( s ), with a nearest neighbors Hamiltonian, and a unique ground state. The ground state can be seen as a uniform superposition of all s -colored Motzkin walks. The half-chain entanglement entropy provably violates the area law by a square root factor in the system’s size (∼ n ) for s > 1. For s = 1, the violation is logarithmic (Bravyi et al 2012 Phys. Rev. Lett . 109 207202). Moreover in Movassagh and Shor (2016 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA ) it was proved that the gap vanishes polynomially and is O ( n − c ) with c ⩾ 2 . Recently, a deformation of Movassagh and Shor (2016 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA ), which we call ‘weighted Motzkin quantum spin chain’ was proposed Zhang et al (2016 arXiv:1606.07795). This model has a unique ground state that is a superposition of the s -colored Motzkin walks weighted by t a r e a { M o t z k i n w a l k } with t > 1. The most surprising feature of this model is that it violates the area law by a factor of n . Here we prove that the gap of this model is upper bounded by 8 n s t − n 2 / 3 for t > 1 and s > 1.

Entangled spin chain

Olof Salberger, V. E. Korepin

We introduce a new model of interacting spin 1/2. It describes interactions of three nearest neighbors. The Hamiltonian can be expressed in terms of Fredkin gates. The Fredkin gate (also known as the controlled swap gate) is a computational circuit suitable for reversible computing. Our construction generalizes the model presented by Peter Shor and Ramis Movassagh to half-integer spins. Our model can be solved by means of Catalan combinatorics in the form of random walks on the upper half plane of a square lattice (Dyck walks). Each Dyck path can be mapped on a wave function of spins. The ground state is an equally weighted superposition of Dyck walks (instead of Motzkin walks). We can also express it as a matrix product state. We further construct a model of interacting spins 3/2 and greater half-integer spins. The models with higher spins require coloring of Dyck walks. We construct a [Formula: see text] symmetric model (where [Formula: see text] is the number of colors). The leading term of the entanglement entropy is then proportional to the square root of the length of the lattice (like in the Shor–Movassagh model). The gap closes as a high power of the length of the lattice [5, 11].

Exact solution of the quantum integrable model associated with the Motzkin spin chain

Kun Hao, Olof Salberger, V. E. Korepin

Abstract The Motzkin spin chain is a spin-1 frustration-free model introduced by Shor & Movassagh. The ground state is constructed by mapping random walks on the upper half of the square lattice to spin configurations. It has unusually large entanglement entropy [quantum fluctuations]. The ground state of the Motzkin chain can be analytically described by the Motzkin paths. There is no analytical description of the excited states. The model is not solvable. We simplify the model by removing one of the local equivalence moves of the Motzkin paths. The system becomes integrable [similar to the XXX spin chain]. We call it free Motzkin chain. From the point of view of quantum integrability, the model is special since its R-matrix does not have crossing unitarity. We solve the periodic free Motzkin chain by generalizing the functional Bethe Ansatz method. We construct a T − Q relation with an additional parameter to formulate the energy spectrum. This new parameter is related to the roots of unity and can be described by the Möbius function in number theory. We observe further patterns of number theory.

Deformed Fredkin spin chain with extensive entanglement

Olof Salberger, Takuma Udagawa, Zhao Zhang +3 more

Abstract We introduce a new spin chain which is a deformation of the Fredkin spin chain and has a phase transition between bounded and extensive entanglement entropy scaling. In this chain, spins have a local interaction of three nearest neighbors. The Hamiltonian is frustration-free and its ground state can be described analytically as a weighted superposition of Dyck paths that depends on a deformation parameter t . In the purely spin 1/2 case, whenever t ≠ 1 , the entanglement entropy obeys an area law: it is bounded from above by a constant, when the size of the block n increases. When a local color degree of freedom is introduced and t > 1 the entanglement entropy increases linearly, while for t < 1 an area law is obeyed. The half-chain entanglement entropy is tightly bounded by n log ⁡ s where 2 n is the length of the chain, and s is the number of colors. Our chain fosters a new example for a significant boost to entropy and for the existence of the associated critical rainbow phase where the entanglement entropy scales with volume that discovered by Zhang, Ahmadain and Klich ( Proc. Natl Acad. Sci 2017).
