We study the spin-
1/2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the nearest-neighbor
J1>0, the next-nearest-neighobr
J2>0 Heisenberg interactions, and the additional scalar chiral interaction ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}({\stackrel{P\vec}{S}}_{i}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\stackrel{P\vec}{S}}_{j})\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{\stackrel{P\vec}{S}}_{k}$ for the three spins in all the triangles using large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculation on cylinder geometry. With increasing
J2 (${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}0.3$) and ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$ (${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}1.0$) interactions, we establish a quantum phase diagram with the magnetically ordered ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$, stripe, and noncoplanar tetrahedral phase. In between these magnetic order phases, we find a chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase, which is identified as a $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall state with possible spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking. By switching on the chiral interaction, we find that the previously identified spin liquid in the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular model ($0.08\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.15$) shows a phase transition to the CSL phase at very small ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$. We also compute the spin triplet gap in both spin liquid phases, and our finite-size results suggest a large gap in the odd topological sector but a small or vanishing gap in the even sector. We discuss the implications of our results on the nature of the spin liquid phases.
We study the
S=1/2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions
J1 and
J2 with the density matrix renormalization group, on long open cylinders with widths up to nine lattice spacings. In an intermediate
J2 region $0.06\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.17$, we find evidence for a spin liquid (SL) state with short range spin-spin, bond-bond, and chiral correlation lengths, bordered by a classical ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ N\'eel ordered state at small
J2 and by a two sublattice collinear magnetically ordered state at larger
J2. Focusing on
J2/J1=0.1, we find a number of signatures of a gapped SL phase.
By using Gutzwiller projected fermionic wave functions and variational Monte Carlo technique, we study the spin-
1/2 Heisenberg model with the first-neighbor (
J1), second-neighbor (
J2), and additional scalar chiral interaction ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}{\mathbf{S}}_{i}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}({\mathbf{S}}_{j}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbf{S}}_{k})$ on the triangular lattice. In the nonmagnetic phase of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular model with $0.08\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.16$, recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. B 92, 041105(R) (2015) and Hu, Gong, Zhu, and Sheng, Phys. Rev. B 92, 140403(R) (2015)] find a possible gapped spin liquid with the signal of a competition between a chiral and a
Z2 spin liquid. Motivated by the DMRG results, we consider the chiral interaction ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}{\mathbf{S}}_{i}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}({\mathbf{S}}_{j}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbf{S}}_{k})$ as a perturbation for this nonmagnetic phase. We find that with growing ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$, the gapless U(1) Dirac spin liquid, which has the best variational energy for ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}=0$, exhibits the energy instability towards a gapped spin liquid with nontrivial magnetic fluxes and nonzero chiral order. We calculate topological Chern number and ground-state degeneracy, both of which identify this flux state as the chiral spin liquid with fractionalized Chern number
C=1/2 and twofold topological degeneracy. Our results indicate a positive direction to stabilize a chiral spin liquid near the nonmagnetic phase of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular model.
We propose a finite-temperature phase diagram for the two-dimensional spin-
1/2 ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ XXZ antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. Our analysis, based on a composite fermion representation, yields several phases. This includes a zero-temperature helical spin liquid with
N=6 anisotropic Dirac cones, and with nonzero vector chirality implying a broken
Z2 symmetry. It is terminated at
T=0 by a continuous quantum phase transition to a ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ ordered state around ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\approx}0.089$ in the XX limit; these phases share a double degeneracy, which persists to finite
T above the helical spin liquid. By contrast, at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.116$, the transition into a stripe phase appears as first order. We further discuss experimental and numerical consequences of the helical order and the anisotropic nature of the Dirac dispersion.
The nature of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase in the frustrated
J1-
J2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice remains an open and actively debated problem. In this work, we employ the infinite projected entangled-pair state (PEPS) to systematically investigate the model under different symmetry constraints. Our simulations reveal a direct transition from the
120∘ Néel state to a putative QSL at
J2/J1≈0.08, signaled by the collapse of magnetic order. We further show that, through either an appropriate unitary rotation or spontaneous spin long-range order, the stripe antiferromagnetic phase can also be accurately captured within the infinite PEPS framework. A central focus of our study is the role played by the PEPS symmetry in approximating the QSL ground-state sandwiched between the two magnetic phases. We first found that a fully-symmetric topological
Z2 Resonating Valence Bond state, which can be written as a simple PEPS with bond dimension
D=3, exhibits a reasonably good variational energy. Motivated by this finding, we have further constructed generic
Z2-symmetric PEPS of larger bond dimension (up to
D=7). We found that, under wavefunction optimization, spinons condense and, simultaneously, topological vison excitations get confined, hence precluding
Z2 topological order. This strongly indicates the gapless (or critical) nature of the QSL phase, which is most naturally consistent with a U(1) Dirac spin liquid scenario.
We study the quantum phase diagram of the spin-
1/2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice with first-, second-, and third-neighbor interactions
J1,J2, and
J3 by means of density matrix renormalization group. For small
J2 and
J3, this model sustains a time-reversal invariant quantum spin-liquid phase. With increasing
J2 and
J3, we find in addition a
q=(0,0) N\'eel phase, a chiral spin-liquid phase, an apparent valence-bond crystal phase, and a complex noncoplanar magnetically ordered state with spins forming the vertices of a cuboctahedron known as a cuboc1 phase. Both the chiral spin liquid and cuboc1 phase break time-reversal symmetry in the sense of spontaneous scalar spin chirality. We show that the chiralities in the chiral spin liquid and cuboc1 are distinct, and that these two states are separated by a strong first-order phase transition. The transitions from the chiral spin liquid to both the
q=(0,0) phase and to time-reversal symmetric spin liquid, however, are consistent with continuous quantum phase transitions.
