Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate an angularly multiplexed holographic memory capable of intrinsic generation, storage, and retrieval of multiple photons, based on an off-resonant Raman interaction in warm rubidium-87 vapors. The memory capacity of up to 60 independent atomic spin-wave modes is evidenced by analyzing angular distributions of coincidences between Stokes and time-delayed anti-Stokes light, observed down to the level of single spin-wave excitation during the several-microsecond memory lifetime. We also propose how to practically enhance rates of single- and multiple-photon generation by combining our multimode emissive memory with existing fast optical switches.

We report first experimental demonstration of a warm atomic memory operating at a single-photon-level, capable to store and retrieve up to 120 spatial modes. We present unambiguous spatial g(2)(θS, θAS) cross-correlations between heralding and retrieved photons stored up to several microseconds.

Generation and delayed retrieval of spatially multimode Raman scattering in warm rubidium vapors

Radosław Chrapkiewicz, Wojciech Wasilewski

We apply collective Raman scattering to create, store and retrieve spatially multimode light in warm rubidium-87 vapors. The light is created in a spontaneous Stokes scattering process. This is accompanied by the creation of counterpart collective excitations in the atomic ensemble - the spin waves. After a certain storage time we coherently convert the spin waves into the light in deterministic anti-Stokes scattering. The whole process can be regarded as a delayed four-wave mixing which produces pairs of correlated, delayed random images. Storage of higher order spatial modes up to microseconds is possible owing to usage of a buffer gas. We study the performance of the Raman scattering, storage and retrieval of collective excitations focusing on spatial effects and the influence of decoherence caused by diffusion of rubidium atoms in different buffer gases. We quantify the number of modes created and retrieved by analyzing statistical correlations of intensity fluctuations between portions of the light scattered in the far field.

The multiplexed light storage of Orbital Angular Momentum based on atomic ensembles

Xin She Yang, Hong Chang, Jinwen Wang +11 more

The improvement of the multi-mode capability of quantum memory can further improve the utilization efficiency of the quantum memory and reduce the requirement of quantum communication for storage units. In this letter, we experimentally investigate the multi-mode light multiplexing storage of orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode based on rubidium vapor, and demultiplexing by a photonic OAM mode splitter which combines a Sagnac loop with two dove prisms. Our results show a mode extinction ratio higher than 80$\%$ at 1 $μ$s of storage time. Meanwhile, two OAM modes have been multiplexing stored and demultiplexed in our experimental configuration. We believe the experimental scheme may provide a possibility for high channel capacity and multi-mode quantum multiplexed quantum storage based on atomic ensembles.

Cavity-enhanced and temporally multiplexed atom-photon entanglement interface

Hailong Liu, Minjie Wang, Haole Jiao +4 more

Practical realization of quantum repeaters requires quantum memories with high retrieval efficiency, multi-mode storage capacities, and long lifetimes. Here, we report a high-retrieval-efficiency and temporally multiplexed atom-photon entanglement source. A train of 12 write pulses in time is applied to a cold atomic ensemble along different directions, which generates temporally multiplexed pairs of Stokes photons and spin waves via Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller processes. The two arms of a polarization interferometer are used to encode photonic qubits of 12 Stokes temporal modes. The multiplexed spin-wave qubits, each of which is entangled with one Stokes qubit, are stored in a "clock" coherence. A ring cavity that resonates simultaneously with the two arms of the interferometer is used to enhance retrieval from the spin-wave qubits, with the intrinsic retrieval efficiency reaching 70.4%. The multiplexed source gives rise to a ∼12.1-fold increase in atom-photon entanglement-generation probability compared to the single-mode source. The measured Bell parameter for the multiplexed atom-photon entanglement is 2.21(2), along with a memory lifetime of up to ∼125 µs.
