Abstract

In this paper, a new kind of multigrid method is proposed for the ground state solution of Bose-Einstein condensates based on Newton iteration method. Instead of treating eigenvalue $λ$ and eigenvector $u$ respectively, we regard the eigenpair $(λ, u)$ as one element in the composite space $\R \times H_0^1(Ω)$ and then Newton iteration method is adopted for the nonlinear problem. Thus in this multigrid scheme, we only need to solve a linear discrete boundary value problem in every refined space, which can improve the overall efficiency for the simulation of Bose-Einstein condensations.

A REGULARIZED NEWTON METHOD FOR COMPUTING GROUND STATES OF BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATES∗

Xinming Wu, Zaiwen Wen, Weizhu Bao

Abstract. In this paper, we propose a regularized Newton method for computing ground states of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), which can be formulated as an energy minimization problem with a spherical constraint. The energy functional and constraint are discretized by either the fi-nite difference, or sine or Fourier pseudospectral discretization schemes and thus the original infinite dimensional nonconvex minimization problem is approximated by a finite dimensional constrained nonconvex minimization problem. Then an initial solution is first constructed by using a feasible gra-dient type method, which is an explicit scheme and maintains the spherical constraint automatically. To accelerate the convergence of the gradient type method, we approximate the energy functional by its second-order Taylor expansion with a regularized term at each Newton iteration and adopt a cascadic multigrid technique for selecting initial data. It leads to a standard trust-region subprob-lem and we solve it again by the feasible gradient type method. The convergence of the regularized Newton method is established by adjusting the regularization parameter as the standard trust-region strategy. Extensive numerical experiments on challenging examples, including a BEC in three di-mensions with an optical lattice potential and rotating BECs in two dimensions with rapid rotation and strongly repulsive interaction, show that our method is efficient, accurate and robust. Ground States of Spin-FFF Bose--Einstein Condensates

The computation of the ground states of spin-$F$ Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs) can be formulated as an energy minimization problem with two quadratic constraints. We discretize the energy functional and constraints using the Fourier pseudospectral schemes and view the discretized problem as an optimization problem on manifold. Three different types of retractions to the manifold are designed. They enable us to apply various optimization methods on manifold to solve the problem. Specifically, an adaptive regularized Newton method is used together with a cascadic multigrid technique to accelerate the convergence. Our method is the first applicable algorithm for BECs with an arbitrary integer spin, including the complicated spin-3 BECs. Extensive numerical results on ground states of spin-1, spin-2, and spin-3 BECs with diverse interaction and optical lattice potential in one/two/three dimensions are reported to show the efficiency of our method and to demonstrate interesting physical phenomena.

Riemannian optimization methods for ground states of multicomponent Bose–Einstein condensates

Robert Altmann, Martin Hermann, Daniel Peterseim +1 more

Abstract This paper addresses the computation of ground states of multicomponent Bose–Einstein condensates, defined as the global minimizer of an energy functional on an infinite-dimensional generalised oblique manifold. We establish the existence of the ground state, prove its uniqueness up to scaling and characterize it as the solution to a coupled nonlinear eigenvector problem. By equipping the manifold with several Riemannian metrics, we introduce a suite of Riemannian gradient descent and Riemannian Newton methods. Metrics that incorporate first- or second-order information about the energy are particularly advantageous, effectively preconditioning the resulting methods. For a Riemannian gradient descent method with an energy-adaptive metric, we provide a qualitative global and quantitative local convergence analysis, confirming its reliability and robustness with respect to the choice of the spatial discretization. Numerical experiments highlight the computational efficiency of both the Riemannian gradient descent and Newton methods.

Computing the ground state solution of Bose-Einstein condensations by finite element method

Jing-Liang Qiu

The computational cost of computing the ground state solution of the three dimensional Bose-Einstein condensations(BECs) is generally very high,we reduce the three dimensional problem with the radial symmetry to the one dimensional cigar-shaped problem. The finite element imaginary method is presented and then the nonlinear term is linearized. The numerical examples show that our numerical method has optimal second-order accuracy and the computational cost is low.
