Abstract

By making use of conformal mapping, we construct various time-evolution operators in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), which take the form $\ensuremath{\int}dx\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}f(x)\mathcal{H}(x)$, where $\mathcal{H}(x)$ is the Hamiltonian density of the CFT and $f(x)$ is an envelope function. Examples of such deformed evolution operators include the entanglement Hamiltonian and the so-called sine-square deformation of the CFT. Within our construction, the spectrum and the (finite-size) scaling of the level spacing of the deformed evolution operator are known exactly. Based on our construction, we also propose a regularized version of the sine-square deformation, which, in contrast to the original sine-square deformation, has the spectrum of the CFT defined on a spatial circle of finite circumference $L$, and for which the level spacing scales as $1/{L}^{2}$, once the circumference of the circle and the regularization parameter are suitably adjusted.

Zero-energy states in conformal field theory with sine-square deformation

Shota Tamura, Hosho Katsura

We study the properties of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with sine-square deformation (SSD). We show that there are no eigenstates of the finite norm for the Hamiltonian of a unitary CFT with SSD, except for the zero-energy vacuum state |$\left| {0} \right\rangle$|. We then introduce a regularized version of the SSD Hamiltonian which is related to the undeformed Hamiltonian via a unitary transformation corresponding to the Möbius quantization. The unitary equivalence of the two Hamiltonians allows us to obtain zero-energy states of the deformed Hamiltonian in a systematic way. The regularization also provides a way to compute the expectation values of observables in zero-energy states that are not necessarily normalizable.

Conformal quantum mechanics and sine-square deformation

Tsukasa Tada

We revisit conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) from the perspective of sine-square deformation (SSD) and the entanglement Hamiltonian. The operators related to SSD and the entanglement Hamiltonian are identified. Thus, the nature of SSD and the entanglement can be discussed in a much simpler CQM setting than higher-dimensional field theories.

Quantum dynamics in sine-square deformed conformal field theory: Quench from uniform to nonuniform conformal field theory

Xueda Wen, Jie-qiang Wu

Sine-square deformed conformal field theory has received extensive attention in both condensed matter physics and high-energy physics recently. This is due to its unusual properties, such as having a continuous Virasoro algebra. Here, the authors investigate its nonequilibrium dynamics by studying the entanglement evolution after a quantum quench. New physical effects, such as the absence of revivals in entanglement evolution, are observed in both analytical and numerical calculations. This effect could potentially be used when engineering a gapless system with cold atoms, in order to reduce finite-size effects. The work here also sheds new light on the nonequilibrium dynamics of conformal field theory in curved spacetime.

Entanglement Hamiltonian of the 1 + 1-dimensional free, compactified boson conformal field theory

Ananda Roy, Frank Pollmann, Hubert Saleur

Abstract Entanglement or modular Hamiltonians play a crucial role in the investigation of correlations in quantum field theories. In particular, in 1 + 1 space–time dimensions, the spectra of entanglement Hamiltonians of conformal field theories (CFTs) for certain geometries are related to the spectra of the physical Hamiltonians of corresponding boundary CFTs. As a result, conformal invariance allows exact computation of the spectra of the entanglement Hamiltonians for these models. In this work, we perform this computation of the spectrum of the entanglement Hamiltonian for the free compactified boson CFT over a finite spatial interval. We compare the analytical results obtained for the continuum theory with numerical simulations of a lattice-regularized model for the CFT using density matrix renormalization group technique. To that end, we use a lattice regularization provided by superconducting quantum electronic circuits, built out of Josephson junctions and capacitors. Up to non-universal effects arising due to the lattice regularization, the numerical results are compatible with the predictions of the exact computations.

Infinite circumference limit of conformal field theory

Nobuyuki Ishibashi, Tsukasa Tada

We argue that an infinite circumference limit can be obtained in two-dimensional conformal field theory by adopting as a Hamiltonian instead of L 0 . The theory obtained has a circumference of infinite length and hence exhibits a continuous and heavily degenerated spectrum as well as the continuous Virasoro algebra. The choice of this Hamiltonian was inspired partly by the so-called sine-square deformation, which is found in the study of a certain class of quantum statistical systems. The enigmatic behavior of sine-square deformed systems such as the sharing of their vacuum states with the closed boundary systems can be understood by the appearance of an infinite circumference.

Entanglement Hamiltonian evolution during thermalization in conformal field theory

Xueda Wen, Shinsei Ryu, Andreas W. W. Ludwig

Abstract In this work, we study the time evolution of the entanglement Hamiltonian during the process of thermalization in a (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) after a quantum quench from a special class of initial states. In particular, we focus on a subsystem which is a finite interval at the end of a semi-infinite line. Based on conformal mappings, the exact forms of both entanglement Hamiltonian and entanglement spectrum of the subsystem can be obtained. Aside from various interesting features, it is found that in the infinite time limit the entanglement Hamiltonian and entanglement spectrum are exactly the same as those in the thermal ensemble. The entanglement spectrum approaches the steady state spectrum exponentially in time. We also study the modular flows generated by the entanglement Hamiltonian in Minkowski spacetime, which provides us with an intuitive picture of how the entanglement propagates and how the subsystem is thermalized. Furthermore, the effect of a generic initial state is also discussed.
