Abstract

We report on the observation of an unusual type of parametric downconversion. In the regime where collinear degenerate emission is in the anomalous range of group-velocity dispersion, its spectrum is restricted in both angle and wavelength. Detuning from exact collinear-degenerate phase-matching leads to a ring shape of the wavelength-angular spectrum, suggesting a new type of spatiotemporal coherence and entanglement of photon pairs. By imposing a phase varying in a specific way in both angle and wavelength, one can obtain an interesting state of an entangled photon pair, with the two photons being never at the same point at the same time.

Observation of ultrabroadband, beamlike parametric downconversion

Kevin A. O’Donnell, Alfred B. U’Ren

We report spontaneous parametric downconversion having an unusually wide spectral bandwidth. A collinear type 1 phase-matching configuration is employed with degeneracy near the zero group-velocity dispersion frequency. With a spectral width of 1080 nm and degenerate wavelength of 1885 nm, the source also emits a high flux of 3.4 x 10(11) s(-1)W(-1) photon pairs constrained to a cone of only approximately 2 degrees half-angle. A rigorous theoretical approach is developed that confirms the experimental observations. The source properties are consistent with an ultrashort photon-pair correlation time and, for a narrowband pump, extremely high-dimensional spectral entanglement.

Spectral properties of entangled photon pairs generated via frequency-degenerate type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion

So-Young Baek, Yoon-Ho Kim

We report the complete measurement of the spectral properties of entangled photon pairs generated via frequency-degenerate type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by a cw laser in both the collinear and the noncollinear regimes. The measurement includes the single-photon spectra as well as the two-photon joint spectra. Our results reveal interesting yet subtle differences between the collinear and the noncollinear regimes of frequency-degenerate type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The single-photon and two-photon spectral measurements are in good agreement with the numerical simulation taking into account the tuning curve and the experimental geometry.

Spatial and spectral characterization of photon pairs at telecommunication wavelengths from type-0 spontaneous parametric downconversion

Evelyn A. Ortega, Jorge Fuenzalida, Mirela Selimović +7 more

The thorough characterization of entangled-photon sources is vital for their optimal use in quantum communication. However, this task is not trivial at telecommunication wavelengths. While cameras and spectrometers are well developed for visible and near-infrared spectra, this does not apply in the mid-infrared range. Here, we present a spatial and spectral characterization of photon pairs emitted in a type-0 phase-matched spontaneous parametric downconverted source. We experimentally show how these photon properties are modified by the crystal temperature. This parameter allows easy modification of photon-pair properties to fit multiplexing schemes based on only one entanglement photon source. Our results pave the way for the optimal design and use of spatial and spectral properties of quantum-correlated photon pairs at telecommunication wavelengths.

The spatial shape of entangled photon states generated in non-collinear, walking parametric downconversion

Juan P. Torres, Gabriel Molina‐Terriza, Lluís Torner

We address the spatial shape of entangled photon states generated in spontaneous parametric downconversion in non-collinear geometries, when the interacting waves exhibit Poynting vector walk-off. We discuss how such shape depends on the interplay between the state ellipticity caused by the non-collinear geometry, and the Poynting vector walk-off. In particular, we study the impact of the new features exhibited by walking entangled photons on the implementation of quantum protocols based on the spiral spectra of the entangled photons.

The orbital angular momentum of photons in noncollinear spontaneous parametric downconversion

Juan P. Torres, Clara I. Osorio, Gabriel Molina‐Terriza +1 more

We elucidate the paraxial orbital angular momentum of entangled photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in different non-collinear geometries. To date, most investigations addressed SPDC in nearly collinear phase-matching geometries, where the pump, the signal and idler photons propagate coaxially almost along the same direction. However, non-collinear geometries introduce a variety of new features. The OAM of the entangled photons strongly depend on the propagation direction of the photons. Here we show that locally paraxial measurements of the OAM conducted with entangled photons generated in non collinear geometries, they do not comply with the known selection rules for the spiral index of the pump, signal and idler mode functions (Mair et al., Nature 412, 313 (2001)). In particular, we find the orbital angular momentum of entangled pairs generated in purely transverse-emitting configurations, where the entangled photons counter-propagate perpendicularly to the direction of propagation of the pump beam. In transverse emitting configurations, the spatial shape of the down converted in one transverse dimensions strongly depends on the corresponding spatial shape of the input pump beam, while in the other transverse dimension, the shape is tailored by the longitudinal phase matching. The spatial walk-off of all interacting waves in the parametric process also determines the OAM content of the down-converted photons, and here its influence is also revealed.
