Abstract

We investigated discrete time quantum walks with an arbitrary initial state $\midΨ_{0}(θ,ϕ,φ)\rangle=\cosθe^{iϕ}\mid0L\rangle+\sinθe^{iφ}\mid0R\rangle$ with a U(2) coin $U(α,β,γ)$. We discover that the average position $\bar{x}=\max(\bar{x})\cos(α+γ+ϕ-φ)$, with coin operator $U(α,π/4,γ)$ and initial state $\midΦ_{0}(π/4,ϕ,φ)\rangle=(e^{iϕ}\mid0L\rangle+e^{iφ}\mid0R\rangle)\sqrt{2}/2$. If we set initial state and coin operator to $\midΦ_{0}\rangle(θ,π/2,0)=i\cosθ\mid0L\rangle+\sinθ\mid0R\rangle)$ and coin operator $U(0,π/4,0)$, for $α+γ+ϕ-φ=π/2$, we discover that $\bar{x}=-\max(\bar{x})\cos(2θ).$ Last we verify the result above, and obtain the summarize properties of quantum walks with an arbitrary state. We get that $\bar{x}(θ,ϕ,φ,α,β,γ,t)=\cos2θ*\bar{x}_{|0L\rangle}(β,t)+\sin2θ*\cos(α+γ+ϕ-φ)*\bar{x}_{(\mid0L\rangle+\mid0R\rangle)\sqrt{2}/2}(α=γ=0,β,t)$. If the average positions $\bar{x}$ with initial state $|0L\rangle$ and $\midΨ_{0}\rangle=(\mid0L\rangle+\mid0R\rangle)\sqrt{2}/2$ and coin operator $U(0,β,0)$ are known, we can get the average position result of quantum walks with an arbitrary initial state and a U(2) coin operator.

Average position in quantum walks with a U(2) coin

Min Li, Yong-Sheng Zhang, Guang-Can Guo

We investigated discrete-time quantum walks with an arbitary unitary coin. Here we discover that the average position 〈 x 〉 = max(〈 x 〉) sin(α + γ), while the initial state is 1/√2(|0 L ⟩+i|0 R ⟩). We verify the result, and obtain some symmetry properties of quantum walks with a U(2) coin with |0 L 〉 and |0 R 〉 as the initial state.

A QUANTUM WALK WITH A DELOCALIZED INITIAL STATE: CONTRIBUTION FROM A COIN-FLIP OPERATOR

Takuya Machida

A unit evolution step of discrete-time quantum walks (QWs) is determined by both a coin-flip operator and a position-shift operator. The behavior of quantum walkers after many steps delicately depends on the coin-flip operator and an initial condition of the walk. To get the behavior, a lot of long-time limit distributions for the QWs starting with a localized initial state have been derived. In this paper, we compute limit distributions of a 2-state QW with a delocalized initial state, not a localized initial state, and discuss how the walker depends on the coin-flip operator. The initial state induced from the Fourier series expansion, which is called the (α, β) delocalized initial state in this paper, provides different limit density functions from the ones of the quantum walk with a localized initial state.

Spreading of Quantum Walks from Gaussian Initial States

Alexandre C. Orthey, Edgard P. M. Amorim

We investigate the spreading behavior of the one-dimensional discrete time quantum walk starting from local and Gaussian states. In order to compare both cases, we obtain analytically the average variance of the position by averaging over all spin states. We find out that the average variance for the local case is independent on the quantum coin. However, when the quantum walk starts from a Gaussian state, its average variance depends on the sum of relative phases between spin states given by the quantum coin, and also, on the initial dispersion of the state. We perform numerical simulations of the average probability and variance along the time to confront them with our analytical results.

On the spreading of quantum walks starting from local and delocalized states

Alexandre C. Orthey, Edgard P. M. Amorim

We investigate the ballistic spreading behavior of the one-dimensional discrete time quantum walks whose time evolution is driven by any balanced quantum coin. We obtain closed-form expressions for the long-time variance of position of quantum walks starting from any initial qubit (spin-$1/2$ particle) and position states following a delta-like (local), Gaussian and uniform probability distributions. By averaging over all spin states, we find out that the average variance of a quantum walk starting from a local state is independent of the quantum coin, while from Gaussian and uniform states it depends on the sum of relative phases between spin states given by the quantum coin, being non-dispersive for a Fourier walk and large initial dispersion. We also perform numerical simulations of the average probability distribution and variance along the time to compare them with our analytical results.

Localization in quantum walks on a honeycomb network

Changyuan Lyu, Luyan Yu, Shengjun Wu

We systematically study the localization effect in discrete-time quantum walks on a honeycomb network and establish the mathematical framework. We focus on the Grover walk first and rigorously derive the limit form of the walker's state, showing it has a certain probability to be localized at the starting position. The relationship between localization and the initial coin state is concisely represented by a linear map. We also define and calculate the average probability of localization by generating random initial states. Further, coin operators varying with positions are considered and the sufficient condition for localization is discussed. We also similarly analyze another four-state Grover walk. Theoretical predictions are all in accord with numerical simulation results. Finally, our results are compared with previous works to demonstrate the unusual trapping effect of quantum walks on a honeycomb network, as well as the advantages of our method.

Coin state properties in quantum walks

André M. C. Souza, Roberto F. S. Andrade

Recent experimental advances have measured individual coin components in discrete time quantum walks, which have not received the due attention in most theoretical studies on the theme. Here is presented a detailed investigation of the properties of M, the difference between square modulus of coin states of discrete quantum walks on a linear chain. Local expectation values are obtained in terms of real and imaginary parts of the Fourier transformed wave function. A simple expression is found for the average difference between coin states in terms of an angle θ gauging the coin operator and its initial state. These results are corroborated by numerical integration of dynamical equations in real space. The local dependence is characterized both by large and short period modulations. The richness of revealed patterns suggests that the amount of information stored and retrieved from quantum walks is significantly enhanced if M is taken into account.
