Abstract

We present a detailed study of the Entanglement Entropy (EE) of excited states in all closed rank one subsectors of $$ \mathcal{N}=4 $$ SYM, namely SU(2), SU(1|1) and SL(2). Exploiting the techniques of the Coordinate and the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz we obtain the EE for spin chains with up to seven magnons, at leading order in the coupling expansion but exact in the length of the spin chain and of the part of it that we cut. Focusing on the superconformal primary operator with two magnons in the BMN limit, we derive analytic and exact, in the coupling λ′, expressions for the Renyi and the EE. The interpolating functions for the Renyi and the EE monotonically increase as the coupling increases from the weak coupling λ′ → 0 regime to the strong coupling λ′ → ∞ regime. This results to a violation of a certain bound for the EE that is present at weak coupling and confirms the physical intuition that entanglement increases when the coupling increases.

Numerical calculations on the relative entanglement entropy in critical spin chains

Yuya O Nakagawa, Tomonori Ugajin

Abstract We study the relative entanglement entropy (EE) among various primary excited states in two critical spin chains: the S = 1 / 2 XXZ chain and the transverse field Ising chain at criticality. For the S = 1 / 2 XXZ chain, which corresponds to c = 1 free boson conformal field theory (CFT), we numerically calculate the relative EE by exact diagonalization and find a perfect agreement with the predictions by the CFT. For the transverse field Ising chain at criticality, which corresponds to the c = 1 / 2 Ising CFT, we analytically relate its relative EE to that of the S = 1 / 2 XXZ chain and confirm the relation numerically. We also calculate the ‘sandwiched’ Rényi relative EE and again the numerical results agree well with the analytical predictions. Our results are the first direct confirmation of the CFT predictions on the relative EE of the primary excited states in critical spin chains.

Bound states and entanglement in the excited states of quantum spin chains

Jan Mölter, Thomas Barthel, Ulrich Schollwöck +1 more

We investigate the entanglement properties of the excited states of the spin- Heisenberg ( XXX ) chain with isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions, by exploiting the Bethe ansatz solution of the model. We consider eigenstates obtained from both real and complex solutions ('strings') of the Bethe equations. Physically, the former are states of interacting magnons, whereas the latter contain bound states of groups of particles. We first focus on the situation with few particles in the chain. Using exact results and semiclassical arguments, we derive an upper bound S MAX for the entanglement entropy. This exhibits an intermediate behaviour between logarithmic and extensive, and it is saturated for highly-entangled states. As a function of the eigenstate energy, the entanglement entropy is organized in bands. Their number depends on the number of blocks of contiguous Bethe–Takahashi quantum numbers. In the presence of bound states a significant reduction in the entanglement entropy occurs, reflecting that a group of bound particles behaves effectively as a single particle. Interestingly, the associated entanglement spectrum shows edge-related levels. At a finite particle density, the semiclassical bound S MAX becomes inaccurate. For highly-entangled states S A ∝ L c , with L c the chord length, signalling the crossover to extensive entanglement. Finally, we consider eigenstates containing a single pair of bound particles. No significant entanglement reduction occurs, in contrast with the few-particle case.

Entanglement entropy of excited states

Vincenzo Alba, Maurizio Fagotti, Scuola Normale Superiore

We study the entanglement entropy of a block of contiguous spins in excited states of spin chains. We consider the XY model in a transverse field and the XXZ Heisenberg spin-chain. For the latter, we developed a numerical application of algebraic Bethe Ansatz. We find two main classes of states with logarithmic and extensive behavior in the dimension of the block, characterized by the properties of excitations of the state. This behavior can be related to the locality properties of the Hamiltonian having a given state as ground state. We also provide several details of the finite size scaling. Confinement and oscillating deconfinement crossover of two-magnon excitations in quantum spin chains quantified by spin entanglement entropy

Zhao-Yang Dong, Jian‐Xin Li

We introduce the spin entanglement entropy (EE) to characterize spin excitations. The scalings of EEs are elaborated as $lnN, lnN+{D}_{k}$, and $2lnN+D$ for the single-magnon states, two-magnon bound states, and two-magnon continuum, respectively, based on the Bethe ansatz solutions of the ferromagnetic spin chain with $N$ sites. The $lnN$ divergence for the bound states reveals that the two magnons emerge as a new quasiparticle. More importantly, the nonzero intercepts (${D}_{k},D$) embody the many-body effects of two-magnon states. In particular, an exact relation between the intercept of EEs and an observable quantity, the two-magnon distance, is established for the bound states. In such a case, we quantify the two-magnon confinement in a spin system by the increasing entanglement with the distance as a particle physics analog. Moreover, the EEs can also be used to study the evolution of the excitations. When the bound states are immersed in the continuum in the alternating chain, they undergo an oscillating confinement-deconfinement crossover, shown by the oscillations of the EEs and two-magnon distance with the chain length.

Entanglement entropy fluctuations in quantum Ising chains

M. A. Yurishchev

The behavior of Ising chains with the spin-spin interaction value λ in a transverse magnetic field of constant intensity ( h = 1) is considered. For a chain of infinite length, exact analytical formulas are obtained for the second central moment (dispersion) of the entropy operator Ŝ = -lnρ with reduced density matrix ρ, which corresponds to a semi-infinite part of the model chain occurring in the ground state. In the vicinity of a critical point λ c = 1, the entanglement entropy fluctuation Δ S (defined as the square root of dispersion) diverges as Δ S ∼ [ln(1/|1 − λ|)] 1/2 . For the known behavior of the entanglement entropy S , this divergence results in that the relative fluctuation δ S = Δ S / S vanishes at the critical point, that is, a state with almost nonfluctuating entanglement is attained.
