Abstract

We study the relative entropy and the trace square distance, both of which measure the distance between reduced density matrices of two excited states in two dimensional conformal field theories. We find a general formula for the relative entropy between two primary states with the same conformal dimension in the limit of a single small interval and find that in this case the relative entropy is proportional to the trace square distance. We check our general formulae by calculating the relative entropy between two generalized free fields and the trace square distance between the spin and disorder operators of the critical Ising model. We also give the leading term of the relative entropy in the small interval expansion when the two operators have different conformal dimensions. This turns out to be universal when the CFT has no primaires lighter than the stress tensor. The result reproduces the previously known special cases.

Subsystem trace distance in low-lying states of conformal field theories

Jiaju Zhang, Paola Ruggiero, Pasquale Calabrese

We report on a systematic replica approach to calculate the subsystem trace distance for a generic quantum field theory. This method has been recently introduced in [J. Zhang, P. Ruggiero, P. Calabrese, Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 141602 (2019)], of which this work is a completion. The trace distance between two reduced density matrices $\rho_A$ and $\sigma_A$ is obtained from the moments $\textrm{tr} (\rho_A-\sigma_A)^n$ and taking the limit $n\to1$ of the traces of the even powers. We focus here on the case of a subsystem consisting of a single interval of length $\ell$ embedded in the low lying eigenstates of a one-dimensional critical system of length $L$, a situation that can be studied exploiting the path integral form of the reduced density matrices of two-dimensional conformal field theories. The trace distance turns out to be a {\it scale invariant universal function} of $\ell/L$. Here we complete our previous work by providing detailed derivations of all results and further new formulas for the distances between several low-lying states in two-dimensional free massless compact boson and fermion theories. Remarkably, for one special case in the bosonic theory and for another in the fermionic one, we obtain the exact trace distance, as well as the Schatten $n$-distance, for an interval of arbitrary length, while in generic case we have a general form for the first term in the expansion in powers of $\ell/L$. The analytical predictions in conformal field theories are tested against exact numerical calculations in XX and Ising spin chains, finding perfect agreement. As a byproduct, new results are also obtained for other entanglement-related quantities, such as the relative entropy and the fidelity.

Relative entropy of excited states in conformal field theories of arbitrary dimensions

Gábor Sárosi, Tomonori Ugajin

Extending our previous work, we study the relative entropy between the reduced density matrices obtained from globally excited states in conformal field theories of arbitrary dimensions. We find a general formula in the small subsystem size limit. When one of the states is the vacuum of the CFT, our result matches with the holographic entanglement entropy computations in the corresponding bulk geometries, including AdS black branes. We also discuss the first asymmetric part of the relative entropy and comment on some implications of the results on the distinguishability of black hole microstates in AdS/CFT.

Relative entanglement entropies in 1 + 1-dimensional conformal field theories

Paola Ruggiero, Pasquale Calabrese

We study the relative entanglement entropies of one interval between excited states of a 1+1 dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). To compute the relative entropy S(ρ 1∥ρ 0) between two given reduced density matrices ρ 1 and ρ 0 of a quantum field theory, we employ the replica trick which relies on the path integral representation of Tr(ρ 1 ρ 0 − 1 ) and define a set of Rényi relative entropies S n (ρ 1∥ρ 0). We compute these quantities for integer values of the parameter n and derive via the replica limit the relative entropy between excited states generated by primary fields of a free massless bosonic field. In particular, we provide the relative entanglement entropy of the state described by the primary operator i∂ϕ, both with respect to the ground state and to the state generated by chiral vertex operators. These predictions are tested against exact numerical calculations in the XX spin-chain finding perfect agreement.

Symmetry resolved relative entropies and distances in conformal field theory

Luca Capizzi, Pasquale Calabrese

Abstract We develop a systematic approach to compute the subsystem trace distances and relative entropies for subsystem reduced density matrices associated to excited states in different symmetry sectors of a 1+1 dimensional conformal field theory having an internal U(1) symmetry. We provide analytic expressions for the charged moments corresponding to the resolution of both relative entropies and distances for general integer n. For the relative entropies, these formulas are manageable and the analytic continuation to n = 1 can be worked out in most of the cases. Conversely, for the distances the corresponding charged moments become soon untreatable as n increases. A remarkable result is that relative entropies and distances are the same for all symmetry sectors, i.e. they satisfy entanglement equipartition, like the entropies. Moreover, we exploit the OPE expansion of composite twist fields, to provide very general results when the subsystem is a single interval much smaller than the total system. We focus on the massless compact boson and our results are tested against exact numerical calculations in the XX spin chain.

Dissimilarities of reduced density matrices and eigenstate thermalization hypothesis

He, S., Feng-Li Lin, Zhang, J.

We calculate various quantities that characterize the dissimilarity of reduced density matrices for a short interval of length $\\ell$ in a two-dimensional (2D) large central charge conformal field theory (CFT). These quantities include the R\\'enyi entropy, entanglement entropy, relative entropy, Jensen-Shannon divergence, as well as the Schatten 2-norm and 4-norm. We adopt the method of operator product expansion of twist operators, and calculate the short interval expansion of these quantities up to order of $\\ell^9$ for the contributions from the vacuum conformal family. The formal forms of these dissimilarity measures and the derived Fisher information metric from contributions of general operators are also given. As an application of the results, we use these dissimilarity measures to compare the excited and thermal states, and examine the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) by showing how they behave in high temperature limit. This would help to understand how ETH in 2D CFT can be defined more precisely. We discuss the possibility that all the dissimilarity measures considered here vanish when comparing the reduced density matrices of an excited state and a generalized Gibbs ensemble thermal state. We also discuss ETH for a microcanonical ensemble thermal state in a 2D large central charge CFT, and find that it is approximately satisfied for a small subsystem and violated for a large subsystem.
