Abstract

We show that an interplay between quantum effects, strong on-site ferromagnetic exchange interaction, and antiferromagnetic correlations in Kondo lattices can give rise to an exotic spin-orbit coupled metallic state in regimes where classical treatments predict a trivial insulating behavior. This phenomenon can be simulated with ultracold alkaline-earth fermionic atoms subject to a laser-induced magnetic field by observing dynamics of spin-charge excitations in quench experiments.

Laser-Induced Kondo Effect in Ultracold Alkaline-Earth Fermions

Masaya Nakagawa, Norio Kawakami

We demonstrate that laser excitations can coherently induce a novel Kondo effect in ultracold atoms in optical lattices. Using a model of alkaline-earth fermions with two orbitals, it is shown that the optically coupled two internal states are dynamically entangled to form the Kondo-singlet state, overcoming the heating effect due to the irradiation. Furthermore, a lack of SU(N) symmetry in the optical coupling provides a peculiar feature in the Kondo effect, which results in spin-selective renormalization of effective masses. We also discuss the effects of interorbital exchange interactions, and reveal that they induce novel crossover or reentrant behavior of the Kondo effect owing to control of the coupling anisotropy. The laser-induced Kondo effect is highly controllable by tuning the laser strength and the frequency, and thus offers a versatile platform to study the Kondo physics using ultracold atoms.

Artificial SU(3) spin-orbit coupling and exotic Mott insulators

Mohsen Hafez-Torbati, Walter Hofstetter

Motivated by recent progress in the realization of artificial gauge fields and SU($N$) Mott insulators using alkaline-earth-like atoms in optical lattices, we develop an unbiased SU($N$) real-space dynamical mean-field theory approach to study the effect of spin-orbit coupling and on-site Hubbard interaction $U$ on SU(3) fermionic systems. We investigate the behavior of the local magnetization, double occupancies, and the triple occupancy versus the Hubbard interaction across the metal to Mott insulator transition. We map out the magnetic phase diagram in the large-$U$ limit and show that the spin-orbit coupling can stabilize long-range orders such as ferromagnets, spirals, and stripes with different orientations in SU(3) Mott insulators.

Cyclotron dynamics of a Kondo singlet in a spin-orbit-coupled alkaline-earth-metal atomic gas

Bo-Nan Jiang, Hao Lv, Wenli Wang +3 more

We propose a scheme to investigate the interplay between the Kondo-exchange interaction and the quantum spin Hall effect with ultracold fermionic alkaline-earth-metal atoms trapped in two-dimensional optical lattices using ultracold collision and laser-assisted tunneling. In the strong Kondo-coupling regime, although the loop trajectory of the mobile atom disappears, collective dynamics of an atom pair in two clock states can exhibit an unexpected spin-dependent cyclotron orbit in a plaquette, realizing the quantum spin Hall effect of the Kondo singlet. We demonstrate that the collective cyclotron dynamics of the spin-zero Kondo singlet is governed by an effective Harper-Hofstadter model in addition to second-order diagonal tunneling.

Few-body solutions under spin-exchange interaction: Magnetic bound state and the Kondo screening effect

Peng Cheng, Xiaoling Cui

Motivated by recent progress on ultracold alkaline-earth atoms towards the goal of simulating Kondo physics, in this work we exactly solve the few-body problem of one and two trapped fermions in one dimension interacting with a localized impurity under tunable spin-exchange interaction. It is found that depending on the sign of the spin-exchange coupling, i.e., ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM), the attractive and repulsive branches can hold different magnetic structures. For the two-fermion case, we demonstrate the Kondo screening effect for the attractive branch with AFM coupling, and show that such screening is absent for the ground state with FM coupling. Moreover, we find a sequence of FM upper branches in the AFM coupling side. These FM states are orthogonal to all other attractive branches and their wave functions feature a full spin-charge separation. The effect of an additional contact interaction and the extension of our results to many particles are also discussed. This work reveals the intriguing physics uniquely associated with the spin-exchange interaction in the few-body point of view, which can be readily explored in the experiment of ultracold alkaline-earth atoms.

Orbital magnetism of ultracold fermionic gases in a lattice: Dynamical mean-field approach

Agnieszka Cichy, Andrii Sotnikov

We study finite-temperature properties of ultracold four-component mixtures of alkaline-earth-metal-like atoms in optical lattices that can be effectively described by the two-band spin-$1/2$ Hubbard model including Hund's exchange coupling term. Our main goal is to investigate the effect of exchange interactions on finite-temperature magnetic phases for a wide range of lattice fillings. We use the dynamical mean-field theory approach and its real-space generalization to obtain finite-temperature phase diagrams including transitions to magnetically ordered phases. It allows to determine optimal experimental regimes for approaching long-range ferromagnetic ordering in ultracold gases. We also calculate the entropy in the vicinity of magnetically ordered phases, which provides quantitative predictions for ongoing and future experiments aiming at approaching and studying long-range ordered states in optical lattices.

Probing the Kondo lattice model with alkaline-earth-metal atoms

Michael Foss‐Feig, Michael Hermele, Ana María Rey

We study transport properties of alkaline-earth-metal atoms governed by the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian plus a harmonic confining potential, and suggest simple dynamical probes of several different regimes of the phase diagram that can be implemented with current experimental techniques. In particular, we show how Kondo physics at strong coupling, at low density, and in the heavy fermion phase is manifest in the dipole oscillations of the conduction band upon displacement of the trap center.
