Abstract

In this article we introduce an interesting quantum state, the perfect quantum optical vortex state which exhibits a highly localized distribution along a ring in the quadrature space. We examine its nonclassical properties using the Wigner function and the negativity volume. Such a quantum state can be a useful resource for quantum information processing and communication.

Engineering non-Gaussian entangled states with vortices by photon subtraction

G. S. Agarwal

We show how a quantum mechanical vortex state of a two-mode system can be generated from a squeezed vacuum by subtracting a photon. The vortex state has nonclassical properties; for example, its Wigner function can be negative, in contrast to the Wigner function of the two-mode squeezed vacuum. We show, by calculating the logarithmic negativity parameter, that the vortex state has stronger entanglement than the two-mode squeezed vacuum.

Creation, Storage, and On-Demand Release of Optical Quantum States with a Negative Wigner Function

Nonclassical quantum states---those with no correspondence to classical states---can be characterized by a negative Wigner function and are vital to quantum-information processing. A new all-optical scheme achieves, for the first time, creation, storage, and on-demand release of highly nonclassical photonic states by using two coupled optical cavities, one for creation and storage, and the other for dynamical tuning of the release.

Wigner function and the entanglement of a quantized Bessel-Gaussian vortex state of a quantized radiation field

Kaicheng Zhu, Shaoxin Li, Ying Tang +2 more

A new kind of quantum non-Gaussian state with a vortex structure, termed a Bessel—Gaussian vortex state, is constructed, which is an eigenstate of the sum of squared annihilation operators a 2 + b 2 . The Wigner function of the quantum vortex state is derived and exhibits negativity which is an indication of nonclassicality. It is also found that a quantized vortex state is always in entanglement. And a scheme for generating such quantized vortex states is proposed.

Generating new nonclassical state by repeatedly operating number operator on coherent state

Gang Ren, Jian-ming Du, Wen‐Hai Zhang

In this paper, using the principle of quantum state superposition, we report a nonclassical quantum state which is constructed by repeatedly operating the number operator on the coherent state. Nonclassical effects of this state are discussed by photon-number distribution, sub-Poissonian statistics, anti-bunching and negativity of Wigner function and squeezing effect. Our work provides an important nonclassical resource, which may be used in quantum communication and quantum optics.

Comment on “Generating a perfect quantum optical vortex”

David Barral, Jesús Liñares

In a recent article, Banerji et al. introduced a novel quantum state of light, coined as the perfect quantum optical vortex state [Phys. Rev. A 94, 053838 (2016)] due to its mathematical similarity with the classical perfect vortex beam. This state is obtained by means of the Fourier transform of a Bessel-Gaussian vortex state, and the authors claim that this can be accomplished by means of a simple lens. Here, we will show that this statement is wrong since a lens cannot modify the quantum noise distribution related to the input optical quantum state and this has to be exchanged by an ``effective lens.''
