Nonequilibrium current-carrying steady states in the anisotropic XY spin chain

Abstract

Out-of-equilibrium behavior is explored in the one-dimensional anisotropic XY model. Initially preparing the system in the isotropic XX model with a linearly varying magnetic field to create a domain-wall magnetization profile, dynamics is generated by rapidly changing the exchange interaction anisotropy and external magnetic field. Relaxation to a nonequilibrium steady state is studied analytically at the critical transverse Ising point, where correlation functions may be computed in closed form. For arbitrary values of anisotropy and external field, an effective generalized Gibbs' ensemble is shown to accurately describe observables in the long-time limit. Additionally, we find spatial oscillations in the exponentially decaying, transverse spin-spin correlation functions with wavelength set by the magnetization jump across the initial domain wall. This wavelength depends only weakly on anisotropy and magnetic field in contrast to the current, which is highly dependent on these parameters.

Nonequilibrium phases and phase transitions of the XY model

Tharnier O. Puel, Stefano Chesi, Stefan Kirchner +1 more

We obtain the steady-state phase diagram of a transverse-field XY spin chain coupled at its ends to magnetic reservoirs held at different magnetic potentials. In the long-time limit, the magnetization bias across the system generates a current-carrying nonequilibrium steady state. We characterize the different nonequilibrium phases as functions of the chain's parameters and magnetic potentials, in terms of their correlation functions and entanglement content. The mixed-order transition, previously observed for the case of a transverse-field Ising chain, is established to emerge as a generic feature of a wider class of out-of-equilibrium problems. The critical exponents associated with this universality class are determined analytically. Results are also contrasted with those obtained in the limit of Markovian reservoirs. Our findings should prove helpful in establishing the properties of nonequilibrium phases and phase transitions of extended open quantum systems.

Quantum quenches in an XXZ spin chain from a spatially inhomogeneous initial state

Jarrett L. Lancaster, Aditi Mitra

Results are presented for the nonequilibrium dynamics of a quantum XXZ -spin chain whose spins are initially arranged in a domain wall profile via the application of a magnetic field in the z direction, which is spatially varying along the chain. The system is driven out of equilibrium in two ways: a). by rapidly turning off the magnetic field, b). by rapidly quenching the interactions at the same time as the magnetic field is turned off. The time evolution of the domain wall profile as well as various two-point spin correlation functions are studied by the exact solution of the fermionic problem for the XX chain and via a bosonization approach and a mean-field approach for the XXZ chain. At long times the magnetization is found to equilibrate (reach the ground state value), while the two-point correlation functions in general do not. In particular, for quenches within the gapless XX phase, the spin correlation function transverse to the z direction acquires a spatially inhomogeneous structure at long times whose details depend on the initial domain wall profile. The spatial inhomogeneity is also recovered for the case of classical spins initially arranged in a domain wall profile and shows that the inhomogeneities arise due to the dephasing of transverse spin components as the domain wall broadens. A generalized Gibbs ensemble approach is found to be inadequate in capturing this spatially inhomogeneous state.

Entanglement in a time-dependent coupled XY spin chain in an external magnetic field

Gehad Sadiek, Bedoor Alkurtass, Omar Marzook Al-Dossary

We consider an infinite one-dimensional anisotropic $\mathit{XY}$ spin chain with a nearest-neighbor time-dependent Heisenberg coupling $J(t)$ between the spins in presence of a time-dependent magnetic field $h(t)$. We discuss a general solution for the system and present an exact solution for particular choice of $J$ and $h$ of practical interest. We investigate the dynamics of entanglement for different degrees of anisotropy of the system and at both zero and finite temperatures. We find that the time evolution of entanglement in the system shows nonergodic and critical behavior at zero and finite temperatures and different degrees of anisotropy. The asymptotic behavior of entanglement at the infinite time limit at zero temperature and constant $J$ and $h$ depends only the parameter $\ensuremath{\lambda}=J/h$ rather than the individual values of $J$ and $h$ for all degrees of anisotropy but changes for nonzero temperature. Furthermore, the asymptotic behavior is very sensitive to the initial values of $J$ and $h$ and for particular choices we may create finite asymptotic entanglement regardless of the final values of $J$ and $h$. The persistence of quantum effects in the system as it evolves and as the temperature is raised is studied by monitoring the entanglement. We find that the quantum effects dominate within certain regions of the $\mathit{kT}$-$\ensuremath{\lambda}$ space that vary significantly depending on the degree of the anisotropy of the system. Particularly, the quantum effects in the Ising model case persist in the vicinity of both its critical phase transition point and zero temperature as it evolves in time. Moreover, the interplay between the different system parameters to tune and control the entanglement evolution is explored.

Energy current and Casimir effect with phase transition in the nonequilibrium steady-state of a quantum anisotropic XY spin chain

Georges Collince Fouokeng, F. Kuate Fodouop, Martin Tchoffo +2 more

The dynamics of quantum anisotropic XY spin chain driven out of equilibrium by a transverse magnetic field, that carry an energy current ( J E ) is investigated. Considering the spin exchange and the flow of energy trapped in magnetic field between two defects in the x y -plane separated by a distance d , we derive an analytical expression of the steady state Green's function of the model using the Grassmann algebra in order to determine the Casimir force between two magnetic defects. As soon as done we find that, cooling the system as well as increasing the anisotropic parameter decrease the energy current and accordingly increase the range of the Casimir force. This symmetry is broken with a significant increase of distance between the defects. A critical temperature is then recorded exhibiting a phase transition according to the anisotropic parameter. An interesting feature of this model is that turning the anisotropic parameter as well as the temperature range will better manipulate the energy flux and control the range of the Casimir force.

Out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the XY spin chain from form factor expansion

Etienne Granet, Henrik Dreyer, Fabian H. L. Eßler

We consider the XY spin chain with arbitrary time-dependent magnetic field and anisotropy. We argue that a certain subclass of Gaussian states, called Coherent Ensemble (CE) following [1], provides a natural and unified framework for out-of-equilibrium physics in this model. We show that all correlation functions in the CE can be computed using form factor expansion and expressed in terms of Fredholm determinants. In particular, we present exact out-of-equilibrium expressions in the thermodynamic limit for the previously unknown order parameter 1-point function, dynamical 2-point function and equal-time 3-point function.

Universal front propagation in the quantum Ising chain with domain-wall initial states

Viktor Eisler, Florian Maislinger, Hans Gerd Evertz

We study the melting of domain walls in the ferromagnetic phase of the transverse Ising chain, created by flipping the order-parameter spins along one-half of the chain. If the initial state is excited by a local operator in terms of Jordan-Wigner fermions, the resulting longitudinal magnetization profiles have a universal character. Namely, after proper rescalings, the profiles in the noncritical Ising chain become identical to those obtained for a critical free-fermion chain starting from a step-like initial state. The relation holds exactly in the entire ferromagnetic phase of the Ising chain and can even be extended to the zero-field XY model by a duality argument. In contrast, for domain-wall excitations that are highly non-local in the fermionic variables, the universality of the magnetization profiles is lost. Nevertheless, for both cases we observe that the entanglement entropy asymptotically saturates at the ground-state value, suggesting a simple form of the steady state.
